Now, that the dust has settled, have you shut things down and restarted as suggested in the other thread and here?

Right, It has been months since everything was powered down, so I did as requested and re-booted in order. That seems to have resolved the naming issue.

My Desktop Vista machine lets me ping the xp laptop. Using alph and numeric address. But I cannot ping from the Laptop to the Vista Desktop.

At the moment I have switched off the firewall on each machine (I use ZoneLabs free firewall, I have setup a range of ip address allocated to the trusted zone on each PC. Internet zone set to high, Trusted zone set to medium) However as I say to take one element out of the equation, I switched off Zonelabs.

My Router is issued by my ADSL supplier in the UK, They are the national Telephnoe network coy BT. It is branded to themas BT Home Hub (It is built by THomson)

Each machine shows the DNS server as 192.168.1.254. I have no NodeType setting in the parameters entry in the registry on either machine.

When I try to view Network places from the laptop, it takes between 30 & 90 seconds before coming back and saying the location is not accessible, I might not have rights, and the Network path is not found.

Password Protected Sharing is OFF on the Vista machine

Well I can guarantee that I edited my first post.

All I’m asking is a bit of civility.

Now lets get on with the matter at hand.

I’m just about to work through feedback so far.

    • in reply to: Vista cannot see XP laptop #1173957

      Thanks for the feedback

Firstly, I did not cross post.

I entered the post in the vista forum by mistake. I spotted that almost immediately, and went in and edited it to make it clear that I had put it in the wrong forum and that I would re-post it in the correct one – the networking one.

Now I do not know if I have then not posted correctly, or whether one of the admins has deleted the edit or what.

BUT, I did not submit a cross post, whaetever it may look like.

Even if I had, I would have thought that everyone could calm down a little. Firstly I see that the Networking forum has had a total of 6 posts this month. and 11 since June. The Vista forum is a bit busier with 4 posts today. So cross posting is hardly putting a major pressure on the forums at the moment.

I have been a member here for a 8 years and submitted a few enquiries which I always try and research before posting, and if you bother to look, you would see I have never cross-posted in the past, and as far as I am concerned I did not do so today.

You will also see that I am always fulsome in my thanks for you guys, as I do appreciate the help that I get here. But I’d appreciate the same in return

So can we take a chill pill and start again?

I’ll read the replies I have and respond in the morning

Unfortunately that’s not the answer either. As I use MediaMonkey, WMP is set to never download from the internet

    • in reply to: Disable WMP 11 Library #1172433

Yes I do have MP Classic.

I also have VLC & WinAmp & DivX player, so I need to think how to proceed.

      Thanks

I’ll have a look in the morning.

I just decided to look up my copy of Windows Secrets book, and I’ve just discovered, that by default, Vista catalogues Pictures and Videos as well. I have over 25,000 pictures!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And more importantly, I paid a lot of money to buy Adobe Lightroom. Now I discover that wmp has gaily been cataloguing in the background.

I think that is is for me, I’m now seriously thinking of un-installing. Need to think ’bout it tho. Don’t want to regret it later because of the good bits of wmp11.

Yes its as I thought. You can delete everything except the rip folder and a user on which you can at least tell it to ignore.

But more importantly somehow the settings get changed over time. Don’t know if it is MS updates or what, but I regularly clear this and when I remember to look again in a few weeks, I have a full library.

    • in reply to: Disable WMP 11 Library #1172312

I’m pretty sure that WIndows does not let you disable the last ones. That’s why I changed the location of for example my RIP folder so it is not the default.

      I’ll check and see tho

I can’t believe that there isn’t a registry setting to clear it

    • in reply to: Disable WMP 11 Library #1172191

If you go back to my original post, you’ll see that that is what the problem is. I already have those options set up that way.

      Colin

    • in reply to: Disable WMP 11 Library #1171967

The problem with delete/repair is that that is exactly what it does. I want to delete the library and then stop it ever running (or at least finding any files) again.

    • in reply to: Disable WMP 11 Library #1170644

Have you cleared the check box “Add media files to library when played” in the Player tab of Tools | Options…?

Yes I have cleared that tick box.

I’d prefer not to uninstall, as I do need to use it for some issues.

1.) When this happens can you ping the router?
2.) Some routers can have an inactivity disconnect configured. Have you checked the router configuration?
3.) Since this has recently occurred, have you checked the support articles for any of the updates that may have been applied?

      Joe

Had to wait till now to lose the IE service.

      1 Yes I can

2 As far as I can see there is no inacticity disconnect. I did find a PPP setting which says “Always-On”. I also checked the up time (after I lost my IE connection and it shows 2 days, 12 hrs … I had tried re-booting the router yesterday

      3. The last router update was in June 2008. I’m running that version. I cannot see any reference to updates or resulting problems.

Please tell us more about your setup.

      1.) Is that SP-1?
      2.) Dialup or broadband?
3.) Do you have a router?
      4.) What firewall software?

      Joe

Sorry been out of action for a few days, only just got back to check this.

1 Yes I’m on Vista Home Premium SP-1

2 My account is a Broadband ADSL account

3 Yes. My ISP – (BT in the UK) provides a modem device with the account. BT Home Hub info – I’m on version 1.5.

      4 I use Zonelabs Free Firewall. I’m on V8.0.298.000

5 My PC is ethernet wired.

6 Not using Sleep or Hibernation

    • in reply to: Missing Hard Disk Problem #1155259

Just completed test of the disk under Seatools.

      It passed SMART disk Test

      Short Disk Test

      Long Disk Test

      Strange

    • in reply to: Reboot and select proper boot device #1154754

I’d be inclined to swap the booting priority away from having the floppy first, preferably keeping the HDD as #1. If need be, you can always go back into the BIOS and change it back.

No I have no idea if the Floppy works. For all practical purposes it couild be removed anyway as its never used. However I will remove ot from the Boot Priority section in the BIOS ans see if that makes a difference.

Just thinking about it I don’t think I even have a floppy disk to check even if I wanted to!

However in theory it shouldn’t make a diff as the re-boot should presumably still go throught the same process.

Let you know how I get on.
