Running the OneDrive Troubleshooter does the skydrive /reset and also added the inheritance=NONE for my account. I had installed KB3000850 in November when it became available through Windows Update. The OneDrive Troubleshooter finds no errors but I still have the same problem.

What really bugs me is that when the sync times-out there’s no user notification. Only by looking at the Reliability Monitor did I find that it was hanging each time all day.

On other forums (forii?) I found many reports of Microsoft’s restore not working on RAID arrays. They also recommended Acronis True Image to do the restore; it can process the Microsoft backup.

Sure enough, it did it without a whimper! I am now buying it to replace Microsoft’s POS. It has many more features and can even restore to a different motherboard and disk if the Plus Package is used (I could have used that three years ago).

Has the basic RAID array realy been properly set up/confirmed?
Where is your backup image located?

Attempt to troubleshoot your rebuilt array by reinstalling Windows 7 clean and minimal.
If this proceeds normally you could then boot and use the created W7 boot CD or Windows 7 DVD to restore your image.

Yes, the RAID is setup properly. I just tried istalled Windows 7 cleanly on it.

My backup image is on an ESATA drive.

I still get the same error.

    • in reply to: Unrecognized USB device in Window 7 #1210044

Of course that is technically possible, but it happens even when there are no USB powered devices plugged in. Everything uses external power supplies and it is happening on two different machines with different, powered devices and with and without the use of USB hubs.

      Very bizarre.

Ah, you need power for the USB data signal too you know.

That’s going to be my next step after my AV scan completes and my RAID finishes verification.

FWIW, I installed the Zune on my laptop first. That’s Win 7-64 and the Zune software was a different download for 64-bit. I suppose there could be a bug in just the 32-bit version. I would have thought the System Restore would have cleaned the drivers up. We’ll see.

Everything seems to be good now. I violated my rule of not making two changes at once and uninstalled and cleaned up the Zune software after I verified my RAID and ran a CHKDSK, so I don’t know what the fix was. I didn’t want to have to wait another three hours for the RAID verify if it froze again.

If I feel reckless I’ll install the Zune software again over the weekend. I want it on my desktop.

No specific devices that I can tell. However, I generally run 2-3 external, (with power supplies) HDD’s and an external KB/mouse. I do notice that it MIGHT be more common when using a hub. With limited USB ports built in, it’s not an option unfortunately. It’s not always with the same hub either. On the Vaio I have a cheap USB and an expensive Belkin and it has occurred with both. On the Dell (my wife’s system) she rarely uses a hub at all but it still happens.

I have never removed the mainboard battery (and don’t plan on it) but once I pull the main battery out and reset it that way, all is well for a while. No funky devices and everything works. Since it happens with disparate systems of different brands and both OEM and manual installs of Win7, I was chalking it up to being a Win7 problem. If nobody else is having it, perhaps it’s something else.

Sounds like the power being supplied by the USB port might not be proper.

I would like to use the Windows 7 welcome screen as my wall paper. I would use photoshop to clone out the word Welcome. Could you tell me which folder would conain that image.

      Thank, Ray

You actually like the Welcome Screen? To each his own. I’m not sure where the image file is.

If you want to change the Welcome Screen to something else, here’re the instructions:

The USB issue seems to be limited to the 64-bit version of Windows 7 with more than 4GB of memory installed. I originally discovered this when I increased memory to 20GB. The fix I recommended seems to work for my drives that are under 1TB. Anything over 1TB it will not recognize on a consistent basis – actually if it does it wants to format the drive. I have no problem with drives that are under 500GB. Not sure what the issue is other that Microsoft needs to recognize this and offer a fix better than disabling memory above 4GB.

That certainly isn’t my problem as I have 4GB and Win 7-32 and my Kindle is much smaller than 1TB.

      Hi Bob,

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode and uninstalling the Zune and all applications you installed just before the problem started? Try Revo Free Uninstaller to eliminate all traces of the Zune install. You can get the download here .

That’s going to be my next step after my AV scan completes and my RAID finishes verification.

    • in reply to: Unrecognized USB device in Window 7 #1209799

I have an issue with two laptops regarding USB. One is a brand new Dell (Win7 Home Premium 64bit factory installed) and the other is a Sony Vaio (factory Vista, but I wiped out and installed Win7 Ultimate 32bit) I have the same issue on both: I will get “unrecognized USB device” errors on occasion. Usually, unplugging everything including AC power, removing the battery and allowing it to sit for several minutes will reset everything, but I have had to actually boot in safe mode and remove the unrecognized devices, then reboot to get them to work again as well.

Has anyone else seen this or found a fix?

That is not the problem I had with my Kindle. If you’re getting an unrecognized device, then that’s telling you the truth. For whatever reason Windows isn’t matching your device with its list of devices. What device is unrecognized? You’re probably having a hardware or peripheral device BIOS error.

Sorry, no idea what you mean by “go to your shortcut for opening cmd.exe.” i press “Start” and type “command” in the box and get the old fashioned looking “dos prompt” for C:/Users/Paul

Use Command Prompt in Accessories instead.

    • in reply to: Win 7 – internet connection slowed to a crawl #1204351

As a way of elliminating a possibility, it is always advisable to having the OS specific software from the manufacturer, in this case from I believe he said a Linksys router. If you download the latest firmware and software, if nothing else you now know this is not the problem and can move on. I still say Comcast should be involved.

Linksys’s PC software is just for diagnostics, not drivers. It doesn’t check the Internet connection though.

If my suggestion of powering the cable modem off and back on doesn’t work, then yes, he needs to call Comcast.

    • in reply to: Win7 shutdown leaving things powered on. #1198493

The “Power Button Action” box? That is already set to shut down, unfortunately. I think that’s just for the power button on the front of the case anyway, so maybe I’m in the wrong place. Incidentally, pushing the power button on the front of the case turns off the HD but leaves the keyboard, mouse, etc on just like clicking on shut down.

      Sounds like a design “feature”.
