Installed EMET 5.0 on Win7-64 Pro machine no problem, and selected the “Recommended” settings during setup. Unfortunately, EMET would not allow any of my MS Office 2010 apps (Word, Excel, Visio) to open. EMET notified with a SimExecFlow mitigation error. Why on earth doesn’t a MS security tool allow the basic Office apps to run with the standard settings? Think I’ll uninstall EMET as I can’t afford to have my primary work apps down or to be worrying about what app I haven’t needed to use yet will be blocked.

    • in reply to: Repairing music library? #1456040

Assuming the actual music files are still there and their metadata is intact, the following will recreate the library in Windows Media Player:

      1. Open “Services” from the Start Menu / Control Panel, and stop the “Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service”.

      2. Now navigate to “%Userprofile%AppDataLocalMicrosoftMedia Player”.

      3. Delete all the “Windows Media Library (.wmdb)” types of file inside that folder.

      4. Done! Now simply open WMP and it should start indexing your library again. This might take a while with 600 albums!

    • in reply to: Readers recommend Thunderbird alternatives #1353162

As Fred’s article was aimed at finding a replacement for Thunderbird, I do wish each “recommendation” for a replacement indicated whether the Thunderbird mail folders can be directly imported or not. Never counted, but I likely have thousands of messages archived in Thunderbird folders and any replacement better be able to import and access those folders. BTW, happy that Fred made it clear that Thunderbird isn’t becoming *unsupported*, only that new features won’t be added. It already has all the features I care about, so as long as security updates are made (which they will be according to Mozilla), I will be sticking with T-Bird.

    • in reply to: Can’t get to nbcnews.com/msnbc.com site #1343338

I had exactly the same problem and finally traced it my DO NOT TRACK PLUS browser add-on. I have Abine’s ‘Do Not Track Plus’ on all three browsers (IE, Chrome, Firefox) and all of them were giving me the 404 Error when I tried to link to any article from the NBCNews home page. Turns out I had to tell ‘Do Not Track Plus’ to “allow tracking on nbcnews.com”. You do not have to change any settings for the linked pages, just the NBCNews home page. ‘Do Not Track Plus’ worked fine with MSNBC.com so not sure what changed when they reworked the site. I did write the NBC tech support folks, so in a month or two I’ll block tracking again and see if it’s fixed. If you’re not using this add-on, I’d be suspicious of any other add-on you have which performs any kind of blocking or filtering of content. I can add that ‘Adblock Plus’ does NOT cause any issues with NBCNews.com.

    • in reply to: Build a complete Windows 7 safety net #1279849

It will if you set it to do so through the Task Scheduler. Once you have the backup scheduled follow this path:

Open the Task Scheduler >> expand the TS Library in left sidebar >> Microsoft >> Windows >> Windows Backup >> right-click “Auto Backup” in the top panel >> select properties >> click on the “Conditions” tab >> check the box beside “Wake the computer…”

Thanks for that! Why does MS bury these options so deeply in a maze of left and right clicks? (rhetorical!) How hard would it have been to include a, “Wake the computer?” check box in the Backup setup options? Sheesh!

    • in reply to: Build a complete Windows 7 safety net #1279831
Fred Langa’s last column on “Build a complete Win 7 Safety Net” (Win Secrets Issue 288), created several questions:

      1) Would love to ask some questions of Fred Langa, but how do you write Fred directly? Apparently it’s possible from the questions he addresses in his column, but after much searching I can find no direct e-mail address.

      2) When I set up Windows Backup, I’d like to send the backup on one computer to an “archive” (separate) HD on a different network computer. Windows Backup can see the other drive and it’s folders, but insists on having a login name and password for the network before it will allow me to complete the setup. Being a home system, neither computer nor the network requires a password. Is there a way to send the backup to a drive on local network computer when there are no system passwords?

      3) Will Windows Backup wake a PC if it is ‘sleeping’ at the prescribed backup time?

      4) From the Windows ‘Restore’ dialog box, it would seem that the only option to restore the “user” files is to restore ALL user files. Is it possible to restore individual files?

      Many thanks.
• in reply to: Using Lookup in Excel 2010 #1237756

      Andrew,

      Appreciate this idea as well:

If you do not want the Primary Key of the lookup range to be the first column then you can use MATCH and INDEX together

I had looked at MATCH and INDEX in Microsoft Help as a possible solution, but their example made it less than clear how it was used. Your example was great and made it very clear how to setup that combo-function for my use. Using those functions together (now that I understand the syntax) will come in handy for future database manipulations. Thank you.

Tim, Thank you for this tip:

In Excel, try out Data>Form to do data entry.

For those of you who have to play, “Where’s that command?” in Excel 2010, the “Form” function must be loaded as a custom ribbon item. The function is found at: File | Options | Customize Ribbon | All Commands| Form

    • in reply to: Using Lookup in Excel 2010 #1237523

      Tim,

Thank you for the reply and my apologies for taking so long to acknowledge your input. I was just able to get back to working the issue and between your suggestion to use VLOOKUP and quite a bit of experimentation, I finally got the results I was seeking. The “secret” to success was moving the CD “Catalog Number” column (used as the primary key) to the first column on the primary sheet. Any other location and either the VLOOKUP function wouldn’t work at all, or it would return incorrect results. It apparently does not matter where the primary key column is on the “dependent” sheet, but apparently it must be the first column on the database sheet.

There may be a lookup function which does not require specific column placement of the data, but this works, so I’m happy. Thanks again for the response.

      BK Howard
