I run Windows 10 Home, and a single license for Office 2016 C2R.  Does this apply to me? I haven’t seen anything offering me Outlook (New) yet or tried blocking it, but I did look at the registry.  I do not have a UScheduler_Oobe key under Orchestrator, just CoreMigration, Installation and USOShared.

Thanks for the information.  For some reason I have always thought the Master Patch List was only for people using Windows Pro, so as a Windows Home user, I have been ignoring it.  I will be sure to check it from now on.

Not there either, just the Malicious Software Removal Tool.

No KB5034441 listed.  Just the cumulative update for Windows and the cumulative update for the .NET framework.  So I didn’t get it, which is fine since I didn’t want it.

johnb3030, I was successful in the past by clicking on “Resume Updates”, then immediately clicking on “Pause Updates”. It stopped the update process in its tracks, but reset the clock for pausing, and let me set it to pause for 5 weeks.  You might consider trying this to give yourself the extra 5 weeks.

Thanks, Paul.  I use two HDs for backup for each computer, alternating between them, and I make sure to back up everything before I do any updates, so that is covered.  I have always been a nut about having everything backed up, since I don’t want my hard work, precious photos, tax info etc., lost if something happens to my computer.  In the case of Windows, I want my computer to work again if Microsoft messes it up!

Thank you so much for the script.  Sometimes I wish I could turn off updates altogether.  I know they are supposed to keep us “safe”, but I have a computer still running Windows 7, with no updates since October of 2016, and even browsing the internet (I am a very careful user and have a good internet security package) I have not had a single virus or other problem.  I work harder keeping my two Windows 10 machines safe from Microsoft!

Thank you.  It doesn’t sound too complicated.  I have been reluctant to update to Pro, as you suggested at the end, because I resent having to do so just because Microsoft updates cause so many problems.  Maybe too stubborn for my own good.

I really feel like a person shouldn’t have to work so hard to keep themselves safe from Microsoft, who are supposedly doing many of the problematic things to keep us “safe”.  It’s worse than having a virus!

I run Windows 10 Home, with updates currently paused.  I was considering downloading WuShowHide, but from what I have read I have to un-pause (resume updates) before WuShowHide will work.  Normal behavior for me in the past has been that I click on “Resume Updates” and the updates start downloading and installing.  I don’t understand at which stage I would be able to hide an update I don’t want.  Once it is awaiting restart seems too late.

I intend to wait to do updates until Microsoft fixes the issue.  As a Windows 10 Home user, will the tools suggested at http://www.blockapatch.com work for me? I always assumed these tools were only for Windows 10 (or 11) Pro users.

I always make sure I have a backup before doing an update, but why do you recommend backing up after an update?  I have never done that, and would probably not do so until I was sure everything was working like it’s supposed to.

That happened to me once, and what I did out of desperation was to click on “Resume Updates”, but before it really had time to do anything besides begin checking for updates, I clicked on “Pause Updates”.  It let me click on it 5 times, to delay another 35 days.  I am in nearly the same boat as you, because I am paused until January 6, so I will be trying this strategy again.

    • One Wednesday after a Patch Tuesday, I realized my computer was due to resume updates the next day, which would have been well before there would be any official recommendations.  In desperation I clicked “resume updates”, then immediately clicked “pause updates”.  It worked, and let me click the pause 5 times.  It hadn’t had time to check for updates, much less download any, so I dodged the bullet that time.

    • Firefox updated just fine after KB4474419 installed.

I had to start the Windows Module Installer Service because I had it set to “disabled” rather than manual.  Once both services were started, I set them temporarily to Automatic startup, just to be sure Windows had what it needed for the install and the restart, and it worked.
