AskWoody LoungerSuccess! I got Linux Mint installed correctly last night but didn’t have time to come back here to report. I think it is running correctly but I wasn’t able to shut it down! This morning I have done some google searches and found the answer for shutdown. I have a LOT to learn now! Do you have any suggestions on where to start?
Thanks for all the help in getting me started her.

AskWoody LoungerOK, the installation of the new operating system seems to have gone very well until it got to the point that asked if I wanted it to restart. I figured that must be the point where I should remove the installation DVD from the optical drive so I removed it and then clicked on restart now. It hasn’t restarted and hasn’t done anything except change the appearance of the screen! Did I remove the DVD too soon? If so, will it state that clearly and wait until I do before going on?
Thanks,

AskWoody LoungerThanks Rick, that was very helpful. I have changed the boot order on my newer computer and I may have done it on the older one. I’ll give that a try tomorrow and see how it goes. I believe this old Toshiba Satellite P206-S6267 does have a boot menu when you click the correct function key near the beginning of a boot-up.
Thanks for a very useful and thorough response.

AskWoody LoungerThanks for the info about using one keyboard with two computers. That would be another way for me to make use of the older laptop. I’ll have to try it.

AskWoody LoungerOK, so maybe my problem with extremely low sound volume from the recent videos is simply poor videos!
Thanks,
Bill -
WSBillWilson
AskWoody LoungerJust to be clear, I am using the built-speaker in the laptop. Earlier today while reading my email I clicked on the image of a video in a message and the video played with very good sound. In fact I had to turn it down some because I had it cranked all the way up due to the earlier sound failures. The very poor sound that I originally wrote about was coming from several how-to videos from the internet that I was playing to learn how to troubleshoot Christmas tree lights.
Thanks to all of you for your suggestions.

AskWoody LoungerWe first noticed this problem when the battery was dead and it would charge for a very few seconds and then quit. I found that disconnecting and reconnecting would start the charging again for a few seconds but it would quit again. Earlier today I found that if I removed the battery and then connected it again it would begin to charge and continue to charge. It has charged for several hours today.
I think I’ll buy a new battery and see if that fixes the problem.
Thanks for your suggestion.

AskWoody LoungerI’ll get Speedfan and I think I will also order a new battery. They aren’t extremely expensive.
Thanks for the suggestions.

AskWoody LoungerWell, no not exactly that. I first thought just wiggling the plug would fix it each time but I finally proved to myself that disconnecting and re-connecting the plug was what actually corrected the problem for about 5-10 seconds. Removing the battery and putting it back in fixes the problem for a much longer time but it eventually fails again.
Thanks,
Bill -

AskWoody LoungerThanks BATcher, for clarifying how the two-screen thing works.

AskWoody LoungerRick Corbett and mrjimphelps:
Thanks for your info. I expect I will use the Linux Mint Cinnamon as suggested by Rick.
