      Thanks Hans, that worked.

One more question if I may. Though the macro works, it bounces me back to the first text box that appears in the document every time I run it. Apparently it needs the text box ID to operate on just the specified text box? If that’s the case, then I’m back to where I started. Anyway, many thanks for your help. It is much appreciated!

      Regards,
      Bill

      Hi Hans,

Thanks for the input – it worked as you said it would. Is there a way to make the macro work on just the selected text box? I don’t understand why I get the error noted when I try to run the macro after recording. Thanks in advance for your help–it’s really appreciated!

      Hi Hans,

I’ve tried that, unfortunately unsuccessfully. Word must have some sort of memory constraint. I’m doing this on a machine with a dual-core p-rocessor and 3 GB or RAM. I understand that there’s a lot of overhead with this type of document, but I’ve got a lot of computing power as well.

      Hi Hans,

OK, you asked for it angel !

I have a large document, approx. 50 pages) that is comprised almost entirely of (live) links to an excel spreadsheet. There are two issues I’ve run into as the document has grown. One is the “There are too many edits in this document . . .” problem and the TOC function refuses to function.

I have carefully reconstructed all of the section headers, making them single line paragraphs and manually marking them for TOC. This worked fine when the document was smaller, but simply stopped working as the document has grown. Now when I try to delete the existing TOC and regnerate a new one, nothing happens. No error message and no results, just a blinking cursor at the insertion point. Thinking that this could be related to the “Too many edits . . .” issue, I’ve tried all known (Microsoft documented) methods for clearing the “UNDO” stack etc, with no results. I’m at wit’s end and the project (with many, many hours invested, is at a standstill. Any help in solving these problems is greatly appreciated!

      Thanks in advance,

      Hi Andrew,

Thanks! I will have a look.

      Hi macpropod,

Thanks for the article – I had already found this. Unfortunately it was of no help. I did find a solution though, that may be of interest to everyone. Its an add-in for word call “Cross-Eyes” from Levitt & James. It reveals all of word’s formatting codes and allows you to find the problems that are very difficult or impossible to find using just word’s built-in tools. It allowed me to find what word identified as “too many edits” and now my document is workable again.

Thanks again, to all for their help!!

      Hi Hans,

Thanks for the response. The document updates the spredsheet links just fine. Even when I open the document without updating the links, I have the same problem with the TOC and trying to move anything within the document..

      Hi John,

Sorry if I was unclear. The range for each row is A-F. Thanks for the feedback.

      Hello Legare,

Columns A_F is the correct data range per row. I’ve attached a small portion of the spreadsheet in question that I believe will show you the issues I’m having without wasting too much more of your time. The first data row has a manually applied name range which shows up in the names box. The rest of the named ranges appear when you click on Insert/Name/Define. There are also many more “names” than data rows as I deleted the balance of the spreadsheet and I don’t know how to delete name ranges en-masse Thanks again for all of your your help!

      Regards,
