June 11, 2014 at 10:30 pm in reply to: Memory leak in Word 2013? #1456252

Soemthing is seriously wrong with my Word install (part of Student version of Office 2013). Slowing to a crawl after a few minutes of use. This is a fresh reinstall from yesterday, one that I had to do via the phone b/c MS squawked that I was unable to install it on another computer (which I wasn’t since a drive failed and this is part of a new Windows install on another drive). I installed using the phone method and it was fine.

      This should not be happening.

June 11, 2014 at 9:32 pm in reply to: Cannot remember how to make a heading style’s numbering a subset of the prior heading level #1456250

PS I am noticing that my Heading 3 numbers are continuing as single numbered list, even when seperated by different heading 2 entries:

      A (which is heading 2)
      text
      i (heading 3)
      text
      ii
      text

      B
      text
      iii
      text

Where “iii” should be “i” having reset the numbered list when B (heading 2) began

I looked around the paragraph settings, font, and numbering settings (no numbering shows as assigned) but didn’t see any options.
I am working in the clients Word template, so I have use it.

November 14, 2012 at 10:18 am in reply to: Need help: creating a Table of Contents without figure or table listings #1356960

      Thanks, Pam. I followed your advice and saw exactly what you described. I deleted u and now have {TOC o “1-3” h z}
That didn’t fix the problem however…still the same issue with figures, tables, and bullet points appearing in ToC

Andrew- Figures are given Figure Style, captions are given Caption Style, and notes are given Note style within the Word headings styles. When I look at the ToC settings I don’t see any indication that the ToC is including any of these styles.

September 5, 2012 at 10:55 am in reply to: Word 2010: Table of Contents updates but List of Figures and Tables don’t #1348015

Figured it out. Because tracked changes were on and all changes hadn’t been accepted, I think this “ghost text”marked for deletion (which included figures and captions) might have been messing Word’s ability to update the List of Figures and Tables properly. I pressed Ctrl+A and accepted all changes, then Ctrl+A and F9 to update all.

The takeaway here seems to be that Word gets tripped up by ghost text (text deleted or rather marked for deletion, but not fully purged from the doc) as far as List ToC are concerned.

      Has anyone else encountered this?

Aha! Looks like a co-worker found the solution:

      http://www.tech-archive.net/Archive/Word/microsoft.public.word.docmanagement/2010-02/msg02007.html

edit- Hmm, cannot find normal.dotm anywhere in the templates folder and a co-worker who did follow the advice in that link says that it didn’t work.

      Anyone?

October 28, 2010 at 3:52 pm in reply to: Using Word's insert page number delets my footer #1252280

Hmm, tried “current position” and the page number appeared but removed the two text boxes to the left of it that were on the same horizontal level. The text box that was below it remained, however. So, still removing text boxes. Also, I didn’t see any “Insert at current document position” after right-clicking on the spot in the header after following the “Insert>Page Number>Bottom of Page>Plain Number 1” steps.

Hmm, that didn’t work for me in Draft view, and I haven’t set my mousecontrol settings to differ from default. It does work for me for instance with this webpage (ctrl + mousewheel results in larger or smaller view)

August 20, 2010 at 10:37 am in reply to: Table formatting Q (inserting page break before #1240255

I had a similar problem in 2003. There if I used the “normal” view, now more accurately called “draft”, you can see both the page break and the hard return. You have to be sure to be viewing all the formatting marks to find this. I haven’t tried it yet in 2007, but the draft view seems to be acting the same in other areas.

As an alternative, just go and format the paragraph, and set the height to “exactly” 1 point high. It will essentially disappear.

I tried Draft view but the pages are miniscule, way too small to see, and switiching to One Page view resets the Document Views to Print Layout.

Yes, I know about that the Page Break Before option but don’t want to use it because most of my coworkers get confused by that setting, and several of them will be reviewing this.
