      Thanks for those explicit instructions.

Sounds like one needs to be somewhat a computer geek to fully understand all the nuances, and permutations. At age 73 I don’t follow it that closely. (I have other interest in sailboat design and model rr)

”Some of the download”? I downloaded the stand alone version, GWX_control_panel.exe. No need to install anything.

      cheers, Paul

It gave me a message that AVG blocked some portions of the download,…but the program seems to have cleared her computer of W10,…so I don’t know if, or what, was blocked?

If you only download the ‘stand alone executable version’, does that mean it will NOT continue to block future attempts by Microsoft to reinstall the W10??
I assumed this version was just the most immediate manner of getting W10 off one’s computer, but did not continue to monitor the situation as might the ‘installed version’??

USE GWX Control Panel. It will stop the upgrade and can remove the Win10 installation files if they’ve been downloaded. I suggest you go to the site and read the user guide.

I went to that site, and i am still a little confused about the ‘stand-alone’ vs other version (I am not the most computer literate person…ha..ha).

I just installed that program on my neighbor lady’s computer, and it appears as though the AVG (free version) attempted to block some of the download. Is that possible??

Otherwise I think it went OK.

Here is that site I saw about the excessive file sizes of W10 being loaded on our computers. I responded to that site, but don’t know how to access my comment/question i added there (or thought I added there).

I did just find this reference:

I DO NOT w10 on my computer. And the older lady next door to me does NOT want anything to do with W10 either. We are both happy with good old W7 (like we were with XP).

So I’m looking around for info on how to get this annoying W10 pop up window off of our computers. I had read somewhere that it was a MUCH larger file than we expected that Microsoft had installed on all of our computers, and even hidden away as a hidden file. Plus I read that some solutions for getting this W10 off would only work for a short while, and then some automatic update from Microsoft would reinstall it !!

I would like to get W10 off without installing just another program. Does the GWX Control Paneldo that,…particularly the standalone executable??.
Or should I use the NEVER10 recommended here?

You have a point there Wavy, ….and I may relook at the situation after Thanksgiving and other family matters.

    • in reply to: Used computer just shuts down #1536833

BTW, be aware that the computer itself was picked up by the gentleman about a week after I informed him it was unsuitable to be shown to my neighbor lady friend.
So I am no longer in possession of it, and have simply asked for the refund of the surety deposit I gave him.

      UPDATE:
Just today I have been inform by him that he will refund my money next month. Seems he reread the original email I sent him saying that I was acting to help him sell this laptop to a neighbor, not acting to purchase it for myself, so the check I gave him was a ‘surety deposit’. He also reviewed the copy of my check that I gave him that day, and sure enough it says ‘computer DEPOSIT” not purchase. I think he realized that the judge in small claims court was going to find my story accurate and substantiated with emails and a copy of the check.

Now we’ll see if i get my refund back?

You know, it’s just possible that he got stuck with a faulty computer, and now he is trying to unload it on you.

This guy is in the business, not just an individual who got stuck with a faulty computer

….and with a relationship he hoped to establish with me, he wanted recommendations to other residents of the retirement community.

    • in reply to: Used computer just shuts down #1536752

If you haven’t already purchased it, have the guy either fix it, or walk away.

I never did ‘purchase’ it because:
      a) it was not for me but a retired lady that lives very close by (I was looking for her)
b} I became distrustful of the fellow trying to sell it, as he brushed the problem off as just ‘some settings’

I did not want that lady friend to get involved with a used machine that was going to require service from this guy.

Subsequently the fellow claimed I had purchased the unit rather than simply gave him a deposit on the unit till I could show it to the lady and her daughter over Easter weekend, ……and he claimed I would be responsible for a 25% restocking fee,…a restocking fee on a used machine that was faulty !…I don’t think so !!

So now he picked up his machine and is stone-walling me on the return of MY DEPOSIT.

I’m going to have to spend the money to take him to small claims court,…for my satisfaction, and hopefully so he doesn’t treat some other person that way. I’ve tried to discredit him in the social media, and through Florida consumer affairs.
      https://www.facebook.com/Affordable-TEK-1584509478469355/reviews/

I’ve tried to make this fellow aware that he will likely lose the court case, and if he subsequently fails to pay the judgement amount it will effect his credit rating for the next 20 years. ….all over his failure to simply return my DEPOSIT in full for a faulty used computer he tried to push off on me!!

I pay $79 per month for 3 MBPS download speed. Plus, $25 for a phone which I don’t want. But it’s unlimited data, so I stay with it.

We watch Netflix, so we need unlimited data.
      .

Have you checked your speed to verify that you are truly getting that 3 mbps?

And is 3 mbps really just fine for uninterrupted Netflix?

    • in reply to: Why is the Internet slow and costly in the U.S.? #1524100

One of the main reasons we pay so much is because comm companies can basically charge as much as the market will bear and even then they lie through their teeth in their advertising. While I’m generally opposed to government regulation, they have let the comm companies get away with highway robbery.

One of the greatest sins is that comm companies have been allowed to act as super-monopolies. They control the means of delivery, control the content, and even act as content providers. Competition is an illusion – stay with any provider for longer than the introductory period and you will find yourself paying roughly the same amount as the guy next door with a different provider.

I totally agree with you, these cable companies (particularly Comcast) are a monopolistic whore.

I would be VERY glad to see them regulated/deregulated like the old Ma-Bell phone company years ago. Then perhaps we would see some new companies stepping in to give these big guys some well desired competition.

I’m pleased to hear that (previously well-respected) SourceForge announced yesterday it will stop bundling third-party adware with the downloads of open source apps hosted on its platform.

I hope others follow this practice soon because, like you, I’m tired of searching out the genuinely clean downloads without any unwanted tag-alongs or misrepresentation. (For example, Foxit Reader… with its Foxit Cloud tag-along that gets re-installed automatically with every automatic update… grrr!)

      Hope this helps…

I’m trying to figure that out. The time is about right, just have not been able to see details of that problem yet.
