I have seen this happen. If you will go to the Control Panel, then Keyboard, you will probably find that your cursor blink rate is all the way to the right (as FAST as it can be). Drag the slider bar to place it around the center. Even though this may not seem to affect other programs, it can make the insertion point blink so fast that it is invisible in Word! But it may happen again and you will have to repeat this “fix”.
