nothing’s been updated or installed recently. The PC just runs WinXP, office, acrobat, winzip, etc. i.e. nothing unusual. I don’t seem to be able to boot into safe mode (though can get into BIOS setup). The PC’s on a small home network (2 PCs, laptop), there’s no problem with anything else.

nope. just puts a copy or shortcut whereever I drag it to. there’s no “move” option if I right-click whilst dragging. I get an error if the underlying file is not in the correct folder. I don’t understand why the item on the Start menu isn’t a link or shortcut.

It’s the “reformat the partition” bit I have the problem with. How do I do this ? I know what it means but Win 2K doesn’t seem to let you boot to DOS so I’m going round in circles. I’ve downloaded boot discs from the Internet but they load before the HDD so don’t see C: and thus can’t reformat it.

I’m wondering if it’s a problem with Plug-n-Play. As the printer works fine with my old PC, I thought I’d wire them up so I installed another network card (already use one for broadband connection) and nothing. PC doesn’t see the new network card. According to “services” PlugnPlay is working fine. Except that if you plug in something it don’t play! I’m stumped.

      Thanks

I’ll trying posting in the hardware forum.

I had the same problem in Word 2000 on this PC and I have tested other MS and non-MS Apps and it is only Word that has this problem (and now I’ve found at 130%+ magnification). If it is a graphics card/driver issue I’m at a loss as to how to sort it out as I know nothing about hardware. I have no problem with simply buying a new graphics card if I knew that would solve the problem rather than spending days trying to sort it out (it’d certainly be cheaper considering the work time I’m losing!). Any idea how I can test whether it is the graphics card which is at fault?

    • in reply to: Word Slow Screen Redraw (Office XP) #607091

This gave an interesting result. It worked fine starting with the /a switch as Word started with the default 100% magnification. Through a bit of trial and error I’ve found that the problem only occurs with magnification above 130% (I usually have it around 160%). I have mostly the same kit and set-up on my work PC and don’t have this problem even with the larger magnification so I don’t think that it can be than Word runs slower at a larger magnification.

Much though I hate to let MS off the hook, I’m wondering whether it’s more likely to be a hardware/graphics card problem or limitation.

    • in reply to: Word Slow Screen Redraw (Office XP) #606931

It occurs with all documents in all views though there’s no problem clicking or Alt-Tab into Word when there is no document open or only a blank document open. There is no discernible difference with various tables, graphs etc. However, nearly all the docs I’m working with are nothing more than simple text – they’re drafts of various articles and I do an awful lot of cutting and pasting between them which is why the fact that the screen does not redraw instantaneously is particularly irritating.

I’m working on a stand-alone PC (there is a LAN card but this is used for the cable modem internet connection).

      Thanks

      Thanks. Problem solved.
I’d wondered why there were so few component options in Win2000.
This tip needs circulating more widely

    • in reply to: How can I delete CD Player #555167

the supplier agrees it could be a fault with the CD drive but I don’t want to send my PC away to get something fixed which I’m not going to use so I’m trying to find a way to disable CDPlayer.exe. What I can’t understand is why CDPlayer.exe re-appears if I delete it.

There’s nothing in Control Panel/…./Startup Programs referring to CDPlayer

No, it’s a new PC with Win2000 pre-installed and it’s been happening from day 1. I’ve also tried deleting the AudioCD from Explorer/Folder Options/File Types but to no avail.
