    • in reply to: Bookmarking problem in Opera 10.63 #1263367

      Thanks for the response >>>>>>>>>>

I found a great site to help me with my furnace problem. I also discovered other links/pages on the same site that apply to me.
Typically I can BOOKMARK the site the FIRST time but can’t do it for the subsequent links/pages.
I had no problem doing this in Opera 10.51.
There are dozens of links on this site that I don’t want to dig thru again.
Hence I want to BOOKMARK each one individually.
Again, I had no problem doing this in Opera 10.51 and still don’t if I use that computer which I am NOT using as my main computer.

I want to BOOKMARK all of these pages on one particular site >>>>>

      http://www.inspectapedia.com/heat/Air_Removal_1.htm

      http://www.inspectapedia.com/heat/AirBleedValves.htm

      http://www.inspectapedia.com/heat/ExpansionTanks.htm

I have searched my BOOKMARKS to find these sites but I can’t find any of them in any of my BOOKMARKS.
I typed “inspectapedia” in the SEARCH box in MANAGE BOOKMARKS and found NOTHING.

I go to the sites above which I want to BOOKMARK and go to BOOKMARKS at top of Opera screen ( between VIEW and WIDGETS ) and click on BOOKMARK PAGE and instead of getting choices to NAME and the option to create a new FOLDER to save the bookmark sites , I get a BOOKMARK PROPERTIES BOX ….see the pix attached ( hope this works since I have never posted with a pix = tiny JPG ) >>>

I posted this problem in an Opera Browser Forum and one of the “gurus” there with over 18,000 posts said this …………this makes no sense since I CAN’T find any bookmark with the pages I want above >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The bookmark already exists, that’s why you’re seeing the bookmark properties dialogue. If you really do want to bookmark it again, open the bookmarks panel, open the target folder, and drag it into the open folder wherever you want it.

      Thanks again in advance !!!

    • in reply to: Combofix – heard of it + any good ????? #1254876

I hope this comes out in the right thread.

I am responding since someone asked WHERE I found this application .
I initially googled on “clean as an angel’s underwear” since that is the ONLY info my neighbor could give me . He forgot the name.
Then I got the name – COMBOFIX.
Then I googled COMBOFIX and found the BLEEPING COMPUTER site with tutorial as has been mentioned.

Good to know it is not rogue software.
Thanks for the caveats about using it.

    • in reply to: USB 2.0 card is not up to speed #1250864

      Original poster here………….

Thanks for the reply………….NO yellow marks anywhere in Device Manager.
I took a screenshot of the USB section and found this………..USB2 ENHANCED CONTROLLER.
I am not a computer nerd, but looks normal to me.
Don’t understand all that is here.

OOPS, I can’t insert a screenshot………….guess it would have to be made into an attachment and then sent with this posting.

In any event, the screenshot shows the following >>>>>>>>>

      5 USB Root Hubs
      1 USB mass storage device
4 Intel 8280 1EB USB Universal Host Controllers with different numbers at the ends like 24D2 etc,

      1 Intel 8280 1EB USB2 Enhanced Host Controller

Without understanding it all, it looks like I have ENHANCED USB 2.0 INSTALLED.

Yet, I get the “this device could perform faster message”.

      Thanks again.

The files were DEFINITELY NOT in use.

      Thanks for the reply/replies.
I am sure the Major Geeks app is just what I am looking for.
Years ago I remember reading about some kind of an app that solves this problem.

    • in reply to: Opera – extreme HD activity on shutdown #1234295

Sorry for any confusion and for prolonging this problem.

I use this machine to surf the internet and for email daily.
At the end of the day, I delete PRIVATE DATA using TOOLS in Opera.
I then click on the red X to CLOSE Opera.
Immediately the HD goes nuts = HD light stays on ( blinks so fast ) and the thrashing noise persists for about 30 SECONDS.
This is NOT a bad HD noise.
When the HD light returns to normal and the thrashing noise stops or almost stops after about 30 SECONDS >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Then I click on START and SHUT DOWN to close Win XP for the night.

I am convinced now that this has something to do with the LOW MEMORY warning and the INCREASED PAGE FILE SIZE message.

I may try to SHUT DOWN XP after surfing and doing email and BEFORE I get the low memory message to see if the blinking and thrashing happens.

Thanks again to any who have taken the time and effort to post.
If I find a fix, I will post back.

    • in reply to: Opera – extreme HD activity on shutdown #1234199

It occurred to me the other night since this HD activity occurs EVERY time I shut down this computer if it could be related to XP PAGING MEMORY.

This computer was given to me not working, and I used the RESTORE partition to get it working.
It is an eMachine 2.9 Ghz and came with 256 MB ram – so it must have been a dog in terms of speed.
      It has XP on it.
Not a power house machine but there IS a place for budget boxes.
I added a stick of 512 RAM to it…………so it has a nominal 768 MB ram.
However this computer uses DUAL MEMORY to get full effect, and it does not have a DUAL MEMORY CHIP SET since they are NOT a kit.
I notice that after my normal usage of surfing and emails, I get a LOW ON VIRTUAL MEMORY message EVERY time that XP is INCREASING my PAGING FILE.
I hope to eventually spring for a 2 GB dual memory kit.

COULD this be the cause of the THRASHING of my HD for about a full 30 SECONDS every time I shut down ???????????
The HD light is on STEADY and you can hear the HD thrashing about like it is sweeping out the virtual memory used. ( My imaginiation. )

I have low memory on other older computers but NEVER noticed this kind of HD activity.

      Thanks again in advance.

I have NOTHING else in use in Opera = I use it ONLY for a browser for internet surfing and email on AOL webmail.

    • in reply to: XP – limited or no connectivity to internet #1230472

I really appreciate any efforts since this ain’t simple.

I have NO firewall except the Win XP firewall which I am using on any and all computers.
The modem is a Westell 6100 with two ports = ONLY ONE ethernet connection and ONE USB connection which I am NOT using.
The modem comes from Verizon in New Jersey.
I ONLY use AVG FREE on ALL my computers.

When I originally started DSL, I had Verizon CD which I installed on a computer which I NO LONGER have. I had problems and the Verizon “techie” had me online and took over my computer with my permisson to get things up and running. Have NOT had a problem with DSL since then. I did not want all that crappy software for MSN, etc. that was part of Verizon CD install on my newer computers. I just wanted the CONNECTION. EVER SINCE that setup with Verizon, I have had NO need to use their CD. My DSL connection works fine. On the computers that work ( about 4 of them with XP ) I SIMPLY plug in the SINGLE ethernet cable from the above modem and they work and I can get on the internet. With the other 3 or so computers = NO or PARTIAL internet connectivity messages.

      Thanks again for looking.

    • in reply to: XP – limited or no connectivity to internet #1230401

I am the original poster with same problem on the Dell Dimension 4400 – no internet connection as above.

I have NO hardware between the DSL modem and the computers.
I am on a computer now using the DSL connection with NO problems to post this.
I have NO ROUTER OR NETWORK – ONLY 1 WIRE coming from the DSL modem to EACH computer ONE at a time if needed.
I UNHOOK the wire from this computer and put it on another computer and get on the internet FINE.
I UNHOOK the wire from this computer and hook it up to the DELL Dimension 4400 and get LIMITED OR NO CONNECTIVITY message + cannot find server in Opera which I use on ALL computers.
90 packets SENT and NONE RECEIVED .

I pulled the ethernet card in the DELL 4400 and went to the Davicom site and got the EXACT NEW driver for this card.
      I installed the driver.
I went to CONFIGURE and YES, it did install and comes up as the Davicom driver vs the MS driver when XP was installed.
      Yet, I still can’t connect.

I go to CMD and type in IPCONFIG /ALL and get >>>>>>>>>>>>>

      Physical address = 00-08-A1-0A-55-92
      DHCP = enabled
      Autoconfig = enabled
      Auto IP address = 169.254.164.172
      Subnet Mask = 255.255.0.0
      Default Gateway = BLANK

      I did the IPCONFIG /RELEASE
      Numbers above go to ZEROs

      I did the IPCONFIG /RENEW
Nothing happens, I am looking at a blinking cursor

The lights are ON on the ethernet card.

As I said, I am not of the computer generation and have given up for now = NO CLUE as to what to do next. Done everything I can think of.
VERY FRUSTRATING since this is the THIRD time I have faced this problem.

Thanks again for any help. I know this is a COMMON problem and NOT always easy to fix.

    • in reply to: Opera 10.53 bookmarks = HOW TO = changed #1229185

I hope this comes out in the right place in the thread.

I finally got an answer from Opera forum.
Apparently you get the BOOKMARK PROPERTIES window when the page is already bookmarked.
No idea WHERE in my tons of bookmarks it is saved, but when I pulled up a site that I had NOT bookmarked, I got the normal popup window with choices for making a folder and saving it in bookmarks.

Just wanted to pass on info that others might benefit from.

      Thanks to any responders.
