AFAIK DirectX 10 was installed by the laptop manufacturer and according to specs at the NVIDIA website the graphics card in question uses this version.

It can work with DirectX 9. 10 or 11, whatever, but it doesn’t support features more than ver. 10.

Have you checked what you have installed? Run “dxdiag”.

I don’t ever remember seeing any message saying I could update to DirectX 11, however if it’s possible I’m willing to try … [snip]

AFAIK DirectX 11 isn’t available as a standalone download for Windows 7; it’s included.

      Still curous
How did you get Directx 10 installed? Win 7 comes with Direct11 by default.

As I understand it the OP posted the specifications for the GeForce GT 230M GPU and the laptop; that is, the hardware.

Yes, Windows 7 includes DirectX 11, but the basic system requirements for the GPU are: DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver; so, the GeForce GT 230M GPU should be fine with Win7.

    • in reply to: DirectX Specific Question #1197646

For those of you reading this thread that do not know how to check your version:
In win 7 type dxdiag in the run box or in a cmd prompt. I assume the cmd prompt would work with earlier versions of Windows as well.

Yes; or the run box, or…

My XP is still at DirectX 9 and from what I’ve read, there is NO version 11 yet for XP or Vista. Since I’ve never “knowingly” updated a DirectX, I was wondering if Microsoft includes updated versions in the usual OS updates or does one have to do so manually?

      Al,
The only updates I apply to DirectX on Windows XP are security related. As we all know Windows XP started with DirectX 8, and with the service packs it was later on updated to 8.1 and 9.0c. On the other hand it was also possible to install the DirectX 9.0, 9.0a, 9.0b, and 9.0c on XP SP1, I think. There were those standalone downloads; but I’ve never seen any need for that – better to move to the latest SP and get the latest DirectX for that OS version with the SP.

Anyhow, we have seen some security updates, for example for XP:

      Post SP2:

      http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms07-064.mspx
      Post SP3:
      http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms08-033.mspx
      http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/ms09-011.mspx
      http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS09-028.mspx
      (Usually critical.)

But they are covered by AU & WU/MU or can be downloaded from MS Download Center.

      Pah!

We had minimal fresh snow yesterday, but it still took me 4 hours to get home from the pub. This journey usually takes <1 minute.

Now, I just had to log on…

A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you. And as Al said, welcome.

I’m sure there is a button somewhere to adjust the post count; Hans has to use that sometimes to decrease his post count, to not break the software.

    • in reply to: Cannot organize MSN Explorer favorites #1193313

When I click on “organize favorites” it gets stuck on “loading” and nothing happens. [snip]

Joe didn’t ask which version of IE you are using (this is very much related to IE).

I can replicate this with IE8; i.e. using “Organize favorites” in Windows Explorer with IE8 installed. However, it does work in IE. I assume this is what you mean.

I don’t use IE as my primary browser, and in fact, I have never used the favorites menu in Windows Explorer during all the years since they added it.

I notice that explorer.exe calls on IE when this menu option is selected (ieframe.dll, ieframe.dll.mui).

There is an old documented case with a red X in the dialogue box; the ieframe case (mentioned for example here, with some suggestions about reg. edits). But for the:
      HKCLASSES_ROOTCLSID{55136805-B2DE-11D1-B9F2-00A0C98BC547}

I see no direct differences with my key, apart from the “InProcServer32” sub key. And that’s the ieframe path etc. so it could very well be something wrong there. However, now we are talking about Internet Explorer 8 and a slightly different case, no red X. I have not researched it any further at the moment; I’m not going to change that, now.

See some threads on this topic, not much help there. I’ll look at this when I have some time, I don’t use favorites.
