I did wonder about the scannow; though it did say it found no errors.
But I am happy to have the Tweaking.com tool; with W10, I may need it again!
And btw, I love this forum. We do all work together, and there’s a lot of knowledge here.

You might run the Network Troubleshooter.

If all else fails, you might consider running the Windows Repair Tool from Tweaking.com

Thanks very much, it fixed it! Found errors, and when I rebooted, after some hesitation, the modem was there and the Ethernet connection reestablished.
      A useful tool!

Yes, I did the Network Troubleshooter, no joy; so I will try the repair tool, thanks.

Wow! Never heard of that before. What do you show in devise manager??
      Any yellow marks?

No yellow marks! And everything has been working till recently.

      @ Aravis

You might be able to troubleshoot using info in this article: “Use Wired connection instead of Wireless connection in Windows 8 / 7” at http://www.thewindowsclub.com/change-network-adapter-connection-priority-windows

The dialogs are much the same in Win10 as in Win7/8.1.

Thanks, but since the Ethernet connection has no Internet access, that might be a problem! I updated the Realtek driver, no change. I’m now waiting to see if my ISP who supplied the modem can give me advice…
I still wonder if a W10 update at some time in the past month has done this.

That looks OK! What do you see when you click on Change Adapter settings on the left!

Much the same except that the unplugged message flashes and then it becomes Unidentified network – no internet access.

      Desktop.

I have been seeing this on some Win10 PCs. Usually when it happens in “Network and Sharing Center” the network connection is mis-identified as “Public” instead of “Private”.

In “Network and Sharing Center” click on “Change adapter settings” (left panel) then right-click on the LAN (Local Area Network, AKA “Ethernet”) adapter then click “disable”. Wait 10sec then right-click again then click “enable”. Win10 should re-identify the connection, hopefully correctly, and you should be able to connect to the Internet.

Also, it might help if you go to Device Manager and un-tick “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” under the adapter’s “PropertiesPower Management” tab.

Thanks, but i did that and no change! Is there any way to change the setting from Public to Private? Or do you think I should unplug the modem and plug it in again? I’m a bit worried I will lose the wireless as well!

W10, the answer is to re-boot!

      cheers, Paul

Well, today it started again, and when I noticed that One Drive was sitting there updating but getting nowhere, I unlinked it, and lo and behold, all is well again. But this means One Drive is not doing its job. Now I am hoping Microsoft fixes this very stupid problem. 😡

It’s fixed itself. A reboot helped but then suddenly all was well. NO idea why but thiught I should let you all know.

The big advantage to most social networks over email… less spam! Most networks I belong to have very strong safeguards against spammers. I’m also a moderator on a social network specifically oriented to diabetes, and we have a very strick policy about advertising. We just don’t allow it. The site also allows folks to select what kind of information each person focuses on…

I will add that one reason for using social networks is indicated by the ‘social’ in the name. I enjoy ‘meeting’ people all over the world, with varied viewpoints on many subjects; it’s a bit like a club only a cyber one, and you can make it inclusive or exclusive. Obviously I’m not talking about work use here.
I have engaged in really interesting discussions that I would never have the opportunity for in any other way. Sometimes I see a friend is online and can then ‘Skype’ him/her. In a nutshell, it expands the horizons.

    • Ah thanks! All should be well then! Many thanks to all..

    • Just so we’re clear –
You can install Win 7 from an upgrade disc even if you DON’T have a prior legal copy of XP (R.M. Nixon: “Yes, we could do that, but it would be wrong.” [They did it, anyway] 😡 ). You’ll have to do a clean install, but you would have to do so anyway under the other scenarios, except for the “Call Microsoft & get a legal key” one. If you’re worried about malware, save your data & files to reinstall your programs, format the whole thing and start from scratch. It might be a good idea to image the (otherwise-fully-updated) installation BEFORE installing SP1, then again afterwards. 😎

      Zig

Thanks Zig; actually, I have just found a legal copy of XP that I had for my laptop; I guess i could install that and get the upgrade option from that? Do you think that might be the best option?

    • Sorry for the multiple posts. Was doing a bit of researching, since I could almost think that, with a bit of testing, you can find a solution. I would probably try the registry thing, after backup and then buy a legitimate key. You’d then have a legal Windows version, without the need for a full reinstall.

Of course, a first point of call could be MS support. I understand they were at some point encouraging users who were tricked into buying pirate copies, to go the legitimate way, so they can have a ready made solution for you, too.

One final thought, even if a negative one, but I have to mention it – it is possible that pirate windows versions have embedded malware. You need to ponder that as well.

      Urgh! That’s another thought!

But I do appreciate your advice, at least to try! Thanks so much for all the help. You guys are just the best!

    • As I understand, Enterprise is technically the same as Ultimate, so you could even check with MS if a Ultimate key would work.

After backing up what you have (imaging is recommended), you can even feel bold and try this: http://windows7forums.com/windows-7-installation-upgrade/20669-downgrade-change-windows-7-ultimate-home-premium-professional.html

If you did, then chaging the registry to make windows think it had your desired version, you could then buy a legitimate key.

This latter path is, of course, riskier.

OK. I think I might try MS support first! But thanks for the good advice.
