Thank you for your kind words.

The difficult times are when a program you’re familiar with makes a major change, like going from XP to Windows 7 or Firefox 28 to Firefox 29 all the parts are still there (usually) but the programmers might have moved or dressed them up a bit, and that’s enough to throw a person off.

A Forum with friends is a great place to come when you need your memory jogged a bit, but it doesn’t hurt to explore. I’m sure you’ve heard of the expression; When in doubt, cancel out.

Happy Computing!

I’m using FFv31 and I can vouch that there is still a remove function under the manage search engines options.

You should be able to remove it if it’s there and selectable.

[*]Go to the down arrow in the search box to open your list of engines.
[*]Click on Manage Search Engines.
[*]Select Bee Dictionary.
[*]Click on Remove.

I am still interested in a good answer to the question:

How do I know when nothing on my Windows 7 laptop still needs MSXML 4.x?

Bob,

I haven’t come across a program or script that could search through a machine’s Folders and Files to check for any relationships between msxml4.x, msxml4r.x and a corresponding program and just list them for you. Any Programmers out there?

It’s more time consuming but I’ve been using Process Explorer.

Ever wondered which program has a particular file or directory open? Now you can find out. Process Explorer shows you information about which handles and DLLs processes have opened or loaded.

Source: Windows Sysinternals | Process Explorer v16.02

[*]Unzip the archive.
[*]When the Window opens after extraction click on procexp.exe to run process explorer, no install is needed.
[*]You will see a security warning box asking you if you want to run procexp.exe, click on run.
[*]When the EULA window opens read and/or click on Agree. You will only have to agree one time, any subsequent running’s won’t ask.
[*]Process Explorer will then start.
[*]

Open all of the Programs that you normally use including your All in One Printer, all the Browsers you have, anything and everything. :p

Then on the Process Explorer File Menu, go to Find and click on it, then click on Find Handle or DLL, Type in msxml4.dll, wait for results, then add an r after the 4 and wait for the results.

So far I haven’t had anything show up in what I normally use, but I still have quite a few programs to check. It’d be a cryin’ shame if after checking all my programs xml4 was needed by a program that I had uninstalled last year. 🙁

• in reply to: Upgrading to MSXML6 #1460409

To answer the OP’s original question; You should already have MSXML6 on your system, I’ll explain later.

I’ve run into the same Secunia situation, here’s an excerpt from my thread on SevenForums, post #4: What’s going to happen with Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) 4.x ??

I’ve been reading a very informative Secunia thread here: Secunia | MSXML 4.0 Thread

The one respondent (Maurice Joyce, that name sounds familiar) seems very knowledgeable on what is going on with this situation.

It is a good read especially when you get to the 17th post (his). I wish the Secunia forum had a way to copy the thread link like SevenForums has.

As I said earlier I’m good to go with the version I already have, I set PSI to ignore the file and I’m going to check and see what exactly needs MSXML4.x If I’m not using it it will be uninstalled.

I’m also going to check into Joyce’s suggestion of trying: https://heimdalsecurity.com/en/products that he mentions in post #28. There is a free version that would do the same as PSI.

In reading the whole thread you can decide for yourself how Joyce feels about Secunia’s help in resolving this situation.

Now about that version6; Open Explorer and navigate to: C:WindowsSysWOW64 scroll down beyond the Folders where the alphabetical Files start, then down to MSXML.

[*]You should see: two MSXML versions of 3, 4, and 6. i.e. 3 – 3r, 4 – 4r, and 6 – 6r. Right click on version4, then Properties >Details Tab.

[*]You should see: 4.30.2117.0 as the File Version, and MSXML 4.0 SP3 as the Product Name.

[*]In the properties/details of 4r; You should see: 4.30.2100.0 and MSXML 4.0 SP3 respectively.

As long as you have those two file versions/product names, your okay. If you don’t you can go to post #22 (Joyce’s) and follow his instructions to update to MSXML4.0 SP3.

I have installed the Heimdalsecurity Updater Program (free) and am happy with it. Don’t be alarmed when you do not see all of your programs listed like PSI. Heimdal only lists the programs that are vulnerable to attack, I have four; Two for Adobe Flash (IE and FF) and two for Microsoft’s Core Programs.

In order to test Heimdal I stopped the Secunia PSI Agent from startup and disabled it in Services.msc . If Heimdal proves worthy I will be uninstalling Secunia PSI.

I’m still looking into what program uses version4.

We all deserve better from Microsoft (MS), for reasons unknown to us they just dropped the ball (big time) on this one. Don’t worry, if you search the web MS knows it too.

Here is something anyone can sign-up for, if you have a Windows Live ID: Microsoft Security Bulletin Advance Notification The sign-up link is first up on the right under Related Links just follow the prompts.

If you would rather not register you can go here: Microsoft Security Bulletin; Microsoft Security Bulletin Summary

[*]Scroll down a bit until you see Upcoming Release.

[*]Click on Microsoft Security Bulletin Advance Notification for (current Month – current Year) in this case May 2014.

[*]When that opens you will see what MS is planning for the May 2014 Updates on the 13th.

[*]Don’t forget to check out the Other Information link in the On this Page box.

You can reach this page quicker if you click on either of the two links below the sign-up link I pointed out in my paragraph above or the embolden Read the most recent advance notification or the most recent security bulletin summary near the bottom of that page.

For sh10453; That’s okay no harm, no foul. I believe you learned something here and you can come out now instead of waiting until Tuesday.

• in reply to: Confused about latest patch #1452330

It’s surprising that there is so much confusion here about a security update which is determined and installed automatically by your Windows Update, if Windows Update is turned on, and it should be turned on for individuals.
For corporations, their IT departments decide what updates to send out!

Regardless of which version of Internet Explorer you have, Windows Updates will install the correct security version for you, if your system needs it.

If your Windows Updates are not turned on for some reason that I can’t understand (aside from being a pirated copy of Windows), then go here and follow the simple steps:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/pc-security/updates.aspx

Why do you assume that users that don’t run Windows Updates (WU) automatically are using a pirated copy? You assume too much.

Not everyone enjoys awakening or starting their machines to find that WU has hosed their machine and then has to go through the process of reverting to a time before the WU’s were installed, therefore “they – me” has WU set to “Download Updates but let me choose whether to install them” or hide them.

Microsoft is not infallible – “Once burned, twice shy”. The question here is; When is it your turn?

• in reply to: Confused about latest patch #1452286

WindowsSecret Members are not the only ones confused.

I tried all the “prerequisites” and was told: I either didn’t need them or they weren’t required. Went ahead ran KB2964358 like compiler and my IE10 is still running okay.

• in reply to: Windows Photo Viewer #1307640

Well I did say it would be a long shot 🙁

One more possible fix that I could suggest, and that would be to re-register that PhotoAcq.dll file.

There will be two Commands, the first to make sure the shell command area is okay:

Description
Shell Extensions are in-process COM objects which extends the abilities of Windows operating system. Most shell extensions are automatically installed by the operating system, but there are also many other applications that install additional shell extension components. For example: If you install WinZip on your computer, you’ll see a special WinZip menu when you right-click on a Zip file. This menu is created by adding a shell extension to the system.

Source: Nirsoft ShellExView

To do that you need to open an elevated Command (CMD) Line. Remember how to do that back in post #7?

Go to the blinking cursor, and type or copy/paste: regsvr32 /i shell32.dll The /i switch stands for install.
The next line should read that your CMD was successful.

Then type or copy/paste: regsvr32 /i PhotoAcq.dll
Again the next line should say successful.

Restart your machine, and see if your camera is recognized.

Running the Disk Check is entirely up to you Cam. If you think it would help, you can go to the tutorial page, and print out the instructions.
Under the Author’s name is a drop-down box called tutorial tools. If print version is not showing, click on the down arrow to the right, and a new page will open where you can print out the instructions without all the frills.
Then print out my condensed instructions in post#9.

You have the skills to run a sfc /scannow, and that was on an elevated Command (CMD) Line.

With the Disk Check, you are using the Graphical User Interface (GUI – pronounced “Gooey”), and once you set the parameters it is a matter of closing all open programs, restarting your machine, and letting the re-start, and Disk Check run its course.
From start to finish i would bet you would be done in under 15minutes.

The Disk Check might take care of those cautions and alerts, it depends on what is being flagged. Might be old drivers.
For those cleaners, type or copy/paste the names you posted into the Start/Search box if any results come up, right click on the entry and then click on “Open Folder/File Location”.
Once there check for any Log files (.log), and see if there are any references to your missing .dll files.

By the way….Can you offer any more information (System Specs) on your machine? I do know it is a Dell, and you have the installation disk, and it might have Windows 7 on it. Is it 32 or 64bit?
If you are unsure where this info is located, this may help you find it System Information
.

• in reply to: Windows Photo Viewer #1307391

Your welcome Cam.

This is a long shot, but you could try to run a Disk Check , then re-run the sfc /scannow.

[*]With the Disk Check use option one. Follow the instructions down to step 4.
[*]Then use the options in step 8.
[*]Since the Hard Drive Disk (HDD) is in use you have to go to step 11.
[*]Before you go to step 11a close any open windows or programs, then restart your machine.
[*]Right after the flying windows flags come together, your screen will go black, and you will see the message shown between steps 11b, and 11c. Please note the Warning Box!
[*]Do nothing, and allow the timer to count down, and start the Disk Check.
[*]Do not get anxious it can take five to ten to thirty minutes or more to complete the Check, after which you will see the report in step 11c.

From there windows will automatically re-start. Then re-run the sfc /scannow program like you did in your last post.

The reasoning behind this is, there are times when sfc /scannow can not repair files if there are errors or bad sectors on your HDD.

If this works, great! If not, try to remember, and post back what cleaners the techs asked you to use, as they might have saved the .dll files and we can go and put them back where they belong.

If that is a no-go, you will have to use chowurs suggestion in post #2. If….. you have the installation disk.

Roderunner it is asking to run as administrator……how do I do that? I am not computer literate

[*]Left click on Start Orb – lower left corner.
[*]Left click on All Programs.
[*]Left click on Accessories.
[*]Right click on Command Prompt.
[*]Left click on Run as Administrator.

When CMD window opens; type or copy/paste, sfc /scannow at the blinking cursor (notice the space after sfc).
Press Enter or Return, and allow the program to run until finished.
You could try running it again even if it does not find any errors.

• in reply to: iTunes Warning #1270410

Your welcome, I am Glad that helped solve your issue.

• in reply to: Importing Pictures #1270347

Importing pictures into Win7 gives me so many options.

The one I normally choose is “Import Using Windows”. This works the first time, BUT if I delete the directory of the imported pictures AND empty the recycle bin, when I try to repeat the Import operation the Dialogue box tells me “No new pictures have been found”.

This is because you are deleting the source (The Directory) You can not have one or the other.

If you want to repeat the import function you must have the directory of the imported pix that remains on your camera!

Do Not Format The Camera Disk Until Your Are Sure You have The Pix You Need!

At the very least do not empty the bin. If you go to the Recycle bin and restore the pix to their original location. you would still have what was in the directory.

I search the computer for the original import but it is nowhere to be found – the pictures don’t exist on my syste.

This is because you have cleared the Recycle bin, before you have saved any pix’s

So why can’ I choose the “Import using windows” again. I know I can copy and paste or drag and drop, but would much prefer the original method.

If there is nothing on your camera to import (like a formatted disk) that option will be grayed out.

And why so many options to Import, very confusing
Mike Mullett
Reading UK
Then there is another way to look at this………..

When you go into Explorer to the listing of your camera do you see two storage systems?

One for fixed storage, and one for Removable?

Double click on the one your using. I always have an SD disk in my camera, and set to load that first.

When I double click on it. it opens up into two Folders marked DCIM, and MISC.
Then click on the DCIM, and a Folder opens, 100K7330, double click on that and that is where your newly downloaded pix’s will be!
