“And generally Word doesn’t start checking until you make some change to the document (even inserting a space will refresh its spell check).”

Something else I noticed. Word doesn’t flag spelling errors in a footnote until you make a change to the text of the document.

The map takes up most of an 8.5 x 11.5 sheet in landscape view. If I click inside the map, it is bounded by a box with handles and the “Picture” toolbar appears. If I click outside the box the whole thing is selected (sort of a negative look). If I double click inside the box, the Format Picture window comes up. Pulling in the handles and adding fill color seem to be the only things I can do to this map.

The group buttons are grayed out.

It’s all one drawing. I can’t select the colored parts separately.

If I select the whole drawing and click on the line color palette, all the color choices are grayed out.

I changed the printer setting to print colors as black, but the colored parts of the map come out light gray to gray.

Alt+F9 bring up {EMBED MS Draw 1.01}, so it was done with Word’s drawing feature.

When I push alt+F8 I get a list of my Macros. So you’re thinking it might have been produced in some other application then pasted into the Word document? That could be. I’ll ask the guy who drew it. I thought there might be some simple way to just change all the colors to black.

How do I remove the digital signature from the workbook?

    • in reply to: Remove some default styles (2002 SP-3) #1003678

Inserting the file into a new document got rid of the headings, thanks. And since the template I am using is also my normal.dot, all my styles are automatically applied. Don’t have to manually delete any of his.

Thanks. I wasn’t selecting the proper underline style in the Format/Font box.

    • in reply to: Autoformat footnotes (2002 SP-3) #995144

I should have mentioned that I am working with an existing document, which was converted from a Word Perfect document. On top of that, I am importing it into an InDesign document for a book layout. InDesign won’t automatically change fractions and ordinals. I can autoformat the text of the Word doc, but autoformat is grayed out when you’re working on footnotes. What I have been doing is retyping the ordinals and fractions, with “Autoformat as you type” selected, like you suggested. I was just looking for a way to automate the process.

    • in reply to: Strip out Asian formatting (2002 SP-3) #965965

No, I’m afraid that didn’t fix it. I can clear out the Asian language formatting by stripping out everything (ctrl+spacebar), but I’d like to keep the italic formatting. I guess I can go back in and reapply the italics manually. Thanks for helping.

    • in reply to: Mysterious Asian formatting (2002 SP-3) #965140

Fortunately I had a backup of my normal.dot (because I do have a lot of customizations). I did a litle more investigation of the document I got from the author’s secretary. I opened it up and did a search for any Japanese formatting. Turns out every paragraph has it, although there is no other visual manifestation and no reference to Asian language in any of the styles that came with the document (altho I didn’t look at every one of them). It’s like avirus. What I have decided to do is strip out all formatting and reapply my own styles. I could ask the secretary to redo the manuscript with a clean normal.dot, but that might be asking too much. Thanks for your help.
