    • in reply to: Three solutions for storing photos online #1584711

Does anyone know how to efficiently delete the 22,000 duplicates I now have on Google Photos?

Google automatically uploaded all photos from my old laptop. I bought a new laptop. I copied all my photos from my external backup drive to the new laptop. Google automatically uploaded all those photos, too!

Now I have 2 of everything! What can I do? Any ideas?

I’m just curious: are you still doing business with GoDaddy?

      If so, why?

I’ve been with 1and1.com for years with negligible problems, all of which were immediately resolved with just a phone call.

I hesitate to say this, but my Outlook PST is several GBs and I’ve had no problems (other than moving my email from Outlook Express to “real” Outlook; now that sucked!).

Folders are really important to me but Woody didn’t mention them. Can I import my dozens of folders easily into Gmail?

I have the same ones I’ve had since I got the laptop. I haven’t updated them. What would make working drivers slow down? On the other hand, I guess I could check for later versions anyway. It couldn’t be much worse.

      Thanks for the idea, R4.

Comcast service man just left. It’s not them, nor my router, nor my cable modem, nor my CAT-5 cable — it’s my computer!

He was getting 55 Mbps down, 12 Mbps upload! Same everything. Moved the network cable from his laptop to mine and the slow upload remained.

We’ve eliminated everything but my laptop.

Does anyone have a clue how to start debugging this one? I’ve got some chops, but this one has me stymied.

Thanks for all the good advice. I don’t mind learning the new interface, it was the loss of keystrokes and efficiency that bothered me. You’ve assured me that I don’t have to lose them. Now to find a few days without a deadline.

JC: Resetting the mouse didn’t work. I went into the Bluetooth control panel and turned off the laptop’s BT receiver.

I tried that, Xircal, but with no good result. I set it to 200 seconds, but the problem still occurred.

Research (i.e., Google) led me to some Dell forums where I discovered I was not alone. Other 15z laptops exhibited this weirdness, too. There were several proposed fixes involving software that wasn’t on my machine. But the fix that worked was merely to turn off the laptop’s Bluetooth receiver! It hasn’t occurred since.

Since I only use a BT mouse while on the road, I’ll just turn it back on if/when I need it.

My problem remains, though: I still don’t know how to find the solution myself. But at least it’s fixed! Thanks to all who responded.

Try the Alt-ESC trick, JC. It worked for me. (Of course, if I happened to be mousing at the time, a click sufficed.) I think my troubles also began after a Tuesday night update.

Microsoft support thought the same thing. We spent an hour replacing DWM. No change.

Instead, the fix for me turned out to be the laptop’s Bluetooth receiver. Turned it off and no more problems.

I fell in love with Word when v3 came out for the Macintosh (was that ’88?). Why? Because I could assign any keystroke to any function and still keep my hands on the keyboard.

Over the years, I’ve customized it so every Ctrl- combination and Alt- combo and Shift-Ctrl- combo and Function key and Alt-Shift-Function key, and, and, … well, you get the idea. I customized the menu bars and the toolbars, too. And auto-correct.

When W2007 came out, I inquired as to how to import my Normal.dot file (which is >700KB) and I was told that I couldn’t.

Therefore, I’ve stayed with W2003. And there I’ll remain until I can take my skills and technique with me, instead of losing everything to return to what some beginners’ focus group finds easiest.

So, please tell me that there’s now a way to bring my past along into this future?

CNET mentioned a cute little backlit keyboard barely wider than a Blackberry, with a touchpad and laser pointer for only $35. It’s called FAVI entertainment wireless keyboard. I just ordered one for my media center.

Thanks, Jay. While I create and use Word templates often, somehow I never thought that Pub could create one! I just took your advice, stripped out all the content from last month’s newsletter and saved the remainder as a template.

Oddly enough, this time, when I opened the PUB file, that danged style was displayed normally. Go figgur!

      OMG!

Wendell, I just read my post and, because when I wrote it I was working in PowerPoint, I actually said my problem was in PowerPoint. It’s not.

      It’s in Publisher 2003!

I’m an idiot. Please accept my apologies. I think I’ll try this again, this time mentioning the correct program!
