    • Search folders do give you the unread message counts for IMAP folders – but only if you’ve already clicked into that folder, and it’s updated the message count in the folder list! It seems that until you enter an IMAP folder, it has no way of polling the unread messages.

I don’t know if you ever found a solution to this, but in case you haven’t I’ve just resolved apparently the same problem for me. On http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1071237898 (near the end of the discussion), there’s the suggestion that a conflict between Adobe Photoshop 7 and Windows XP might be to blame. The solution, which has worked perfectly for me (I was being driven mad by Explorer crashing every time I looked at a folder containing a number of JPGs), is to find a JPG file in a folder that you can view without crashing. Right-click it and choose ‘Properties’, and on the ‘Photoshop image’ tab UNCHECK the ‘Generate thumbnail’ box.

      Good luck with it!

Thanks for the reply. A ridiculous system if you ask me, but what more could we expect from Microsoft?! Almost there, but just not quite… (I know that XP does have the option, but still find it amazing that 2000 doesn’t).

    • Thanks – but it isn’t that. The margins are definitely correct, and in any case the problem only occurs on one page.

    • Thanks Leanne. I’ve already got the newest file, since I’m subscribed to the Endnote digest as well!

Thanks to everyone else for all the advice. I think I’m going to leave it a while to see if any more problems are reported, and will then have a go.

      Cheers,

      Alex

Thanks for that – I tried it, but it seems they were rules I exported ages ago, and were not the ones I use currently. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Thanks for the reply. I do have a .rwz file (Microsoft Outlook Internet Settings.RWZ, located in Application DataMicrosoftOutlook). I’m not entire clear what I’m meant to do about it – is it a good thing, a bad thing,…?

      Thanks!

You may already have thought of this, but one possibility is that the taskbar is auto-hiding the new mail notification. Have you tried right-clicking on a blank area of the taskbar and choosing ‘Properties’, and then ‘Customize’ next to ‘Hide inactive icons’. You should be able to tell it to ‘Always show’ for the envelope. I use Outlook 2002 with XP-pro, and have never had a problem with that (although I do have other complaints – but they are no worse than with Outlook 2000).
