If you have Spybot S&D on your computer you could use the Shredder option – just move the required files over and set the number of ‘shreds’ you wish. Useful tool if you know which/what files you want to ensure are permanently deleted. I know Spybot doesn’t get a very good press these days, but it’s still a useful tool to have at ones disposal, whether you actually use it or not.

Ref your problems with SR. From previous posts on the subject, and my own experiences, most issues with SR not working seem to revolve around whatever security package you have on your machine (in your case Kasparski) – I have NIS and unless I go into NIS’s misc settings menu and turn off the option ”Norton product tamper protection”, Norton will not let SR function.

Have a look and see if you have a similar option in K – if yes then turn it off, also turn K off (assuming you’re not connected to the internet) and try a SR. Just remember to turn it all back on again before you reconnect!

I use WinZip and like it very much. If you have no long term need for a zipping utility , I’d download the 45 day trial. It’s free…for 45 days, and there’s no strings attached.

Thanks Mike – I only get zipped files once in a blue moon so I’ll stick with the 7-zip Beta for now. But good to know that WinZip has a no strings 45 day trial – I’ve made a mental note should things go awry with the Beta

      Regards,
      Keith

    • in reply to: compressed files #1189417

7-zip is genuinely free, if you get it from the source: http://www.7-zip.org/download.html (choose your version from the top table)

That said, the Feb. 2009 release might not be able to decompress WinZip version 12 files that used the new compression. There is a new version of 7-zip in beta if the stable release doesn’t work. (Further down the download page.)

Thanks John – As you thought, the Feb 2009 wasn’t able to decompress ver 12 files but I downloaded the Beta and that did the trick. pointer much appreciated

    • in reply to: Adobe Reader 9.2 update available #1181334

Adobe Reader 9.2 update available for XP SP2/SP3, a 43.5 MB download if you avoid the 0.8 MB “Free McAfee Security Scan (optional)”.

There’s still no way to exclude “Acrobat.com on Adobe AIR”, and these components have to be uninstalled after Acrobat Reader is installed, if you don’t want them.

There a lot more detail of what is included in the Acrobat Reader update in this article, and undoubtedly elsewhere…

I’ve also just updated to 9.2 from within 9.1 – no sign of Acrobat.com, Adobe AIR nor any mention of free McAfee security scan.

    • in reply to: Ram #1178879

Hey guys. My computer, a laptop dv6324us Pavillion HP, came with 1GB of RAM on a 32 bit OS. I put in another GB of RAM a few months ago. It made a world of difference.

The question I have now is I want to bump it up another GB. The problem is when I do a scan at crucial.com its says I have the maximum 2GB for my computer.
Why is this and what would happen if I put in more?

Thanks for any advice I can get.

      commonsense

      Hi,
Having consulted the Lounge and Crucial, I recently upgraded my RAM to the max allowed by my system, 2GB – If you revisit Crucial with your 2GB of RAM and run the analysis tool again you’ll see a message similar to the one below – you run the risk of causing problems if you try and put in more than that quoted:

//Although it is physically possible to install more memory, the system will only recognize the maximum listed. Installing more memory may cause major problems. Consult the system’s manufacturer for more information//

    • in reply to: IE8 and Frames #1178293

      XP(H) SP3 + JAVA ™ 6 Update 7

      Question:

Does IE8 support frames? I ask because there is a site I visit where I cannot access beyond the home page if I try and enter using the (obviously main) entry point which uses a frames option. If I navigate to the bottom of the first webpage I can find, in the small print, an explanation that if my browser (IE8) doesn’t support frames I should enter the site using the no frames option. I would have thought IE8 supported frames? The site in question is here. It’s no big deal, just annoying that I have to navigate the site from the options right at the bottom of each webpage.

I should say that I know very little about frames and this site is the only one I’ve ever encountered that needs me to enter using a specific ‘no frames’ entrypoint.

      Thanks,
      Keith

Thought I’d let you all see response I received from the webmaster! As I’m already on Java 6.15 I think I’ll stick with what I’ve got! At least we’ve identified the problem – My thanks to you all.
      Regards,
      Keith

      ——————
      From Webmaster: Hi Keith,
The problem goes back to my using Microsoft FrontPage to set up the website.
That was OK up to a couple of years ago when all of sudden the buttons stopped working.
It turned out to be the latest release of Java (Run Time Environment (RTE)) After a certain release the buttons stop working.
I guess FrontPage did something non-standard. I’m now using Microsoft Expression Web (FrontPage not supported anymore) and am somewhat chicken to try revamping the whole web site with new software in an effort to get the frames working again.
So if you really want to get the buttons working uninstall your current (Sun) Java and install Java version 6 update 5 from http://java.sun.com/products/archive and freeze it which is what I’ve done.
However, my recommendation would be to go in on the non fames button and use the navigation links at the bottom of the page, not as flash as the buttons but you can still navigate the site fully.
Sorry for any inconvenience and there is certainly nothing wrong with your IE8 or Firefox.
I’ve had no comments but then I doubt whether many members update their Java or have even gone to IE8 yet or use Firefox!

Thanks everyone for your inputs. Concensus is that it’s a website problem, not IE/Firefox. I’ll try e-mailing the webmaster – if I get a response I’ll post here.

2G download speed? That’s pretty fast!

So you spotted my deliberate typo!! Sorry, obviously meant 2Mbps (but in reality more like 1.4)
      Keith

    • in reply to: IE8 and Frames #1178091

      Two observations:

1- Accessing the site with IE8 works with frames but is slow to load due to the audio download. How fast is your Internet connection?

2- The site works in Firefox but I don’t get the audio portion.

      Paul,
My broadband connection is listed as 2G but in reality the download speed is more in the region of 1.4G !! As I’ve just posted to Hans, I can get to the home page using the frames entry. The problem is that I don’t seem to be able to get any further and accessing the memorial option from the left hand pane just produces the memorial music over the top of what’s playing on the home page! I’ll try Hans’ suggestion re trusted sites and see if that makes a difference.
      Thanks,
      Keith

First of all your link does not work, but I think this is the site you are trying to link to http://www.lascarisassoc.britanianet.co.uk/

I have the same problem running Windows 7 RTM and IE8.

      Edit:
After going back using HansV”s link it works for me, I think I just did not wait long enough for the page to fully load.

Thanks for input Dave and my apologies for forgetting the www. I’m going to try Hans’ suggestion re trusted sites and see if that makes a difference.
      Cheers,
      Keith

    • in reply to: IE8 and Frames #1178087

The link you provided doesn’t work at all for me in IE8. If I add www. it does: http://www.lascarisassoc.britanianet.co.uk/. If I then select the option Enter (Frames) I get to the Home Frame without problems.

So the problem is not with IE8. Perhaps your security settings are too tight? Does it make a difference if you add the site to your trusted sites (Tools | Internet Options…, Security tab, click Trusted Sites, click Sites)?

      Hans,
My fault re posting the link, forgot to add www. I can get to the home page you’ve posted and I can get there using the ‘frames’ option. However, once there if I select other options from the left hand pane nothing happens = except that when I select the memorial option the home page remains displayed but I get the memorial music over the top of the music being played on the home page!! I’ll try adding the site to my trusted sites and see if that makes any difference.
All very confusing! I’ll post back.

      Thanks,
      Keith

    • in reply to: system restore (again?) #1177218

Sounds good. Just one thing however – you might want to leave Product Tamper Protection set to “on” except when you want to perform a System Restore. It’s just an extra layer of protection so that if some malware does manage to infiltrate your system, the malware will not be able to modify any of the Norton files.

A very good point and one that I’ve taken!!
      Thanks,
      Keith

    • in reply to: system restore (again?) #1177207

      Keith,
NIS doesn’t prevent System Restore from forming a valid restore point, but it can certainly prevent an actual restore to a valid restore point. You indicate that you turned off NIS, but I’ve also found that tweaking one of the NIS settings resolves the problem (at least it has for me).

Open NIS, click on Settings (computer area), then expand Miscellaneous Settings and set the Norton Product Tamper Protection to “off”. This may require a reboot to make the setting stick. If it is NIS that’s causing System Restore to fail, changing this setting should solve the problem. When this setting is set to “on”, NIS won’t let anything overwrite it’s files, and that is essentially what System Restore will try to do when you try to restore to an earlier check point.

      John,
Thank you. Had looked through NIS settings but had missed the significance of Product Tamper Protection. I’ve now switched it off. However, I’m loath at the moment to do a system restore to confirm that that has solved the problem, especially as I now appear to be running AOK. Next time I need to do SR I’ll post here and let you know the outcome.

      Cheers,
      Keith
