I tried again today with a freshly loaded Excel and a file on which I did no manipulations, and the same error occurred. Found I can get by the message with 4 “Enter” clicks, and can then copy to a new sheet. The contents are on the clipboard despite the error message. I found an Event Log entry for that particular time noting I was low on virtual memory (my system has a total of 12Gb memory, not 8 as I said yesterday, and I had 7.9Gb available). I went into the Control Panel and upped the amount of virtual memory — had been letting Windows assign the amount. Won’t know if this fixes the problem until I reboot, but I doubt it. Something has changed, and it may be a memory leak or a patch from MS a few months ago that targeted the Clipboard I cannot remember which it was, but if anyone does please give me the KB number.

    • in reply to: Create New Directory – Gone! #1393884

Yes, I can create a directory from the command prompt (see above) and can also do it via Total Commander and X2. Sometimes, however, I am required to work in Windows Explorer (which I hate) by other programs. As for Malware, beside ESET Security Suite, my malware programs say there’s nothing going on. I think it’s a registry setting but don’t know which one or how it should be set.

      Riffraff:
As I said above, no message, informative or error, appears. Nothing seems to happen. I just opened a command prompt and created a directory that I was unable to create from within Windows Explorer. The option I click on in WE is the “new folder” link at the top of the screen.

    • in reply to: Win7 disappearing Taskbar Icons #1323746

I have to correct my original post (a good reason for previewing posts before submitting). The icons are disappearing from the System Tray partof my toolbar, not the Taskbar/QuickLaunch portion. Still not sure my use of terminology is correct for Win7, but I hope the picture is clear.

      Sorry

    • in reply to: A Windows veteran looks at Win8 Consumer Preview #1323733

Thanks to Woody! Not only have I been convinced to not try out the Win 8 Consumer Preview, I am just about convinced to not give the final version of Win8 a try, and to keep my Win 7 Ultra x64 systems running as long as possible. When they no longer support my requisite hardware at that time, I am seriously contemplating switching everything over to a Mac platform: HW and of course SW. I’ve been eyeing the Mac for a long time now for serious graphic work, but cannot afford the SW switchover fees to maintain two versions of my SW.

I guess that deep down I’m hoping MS will realize they are making a serious business mistake with this new philosophy and put it with their now defunct “Bob”.

      mpioso,
I suspected as much. Thanks for the confirmation.
      Ted,
The last place I’d call for this problem is MS support. Your experience is because Installation problems are usually supported free of charge for a limited period of time, or if you have exceeded the number of installs and have to activate manually. When a mb died and I had to replace it, everything required telephone reactivation, Win 7, Adobe Photoshop, and Office etc. because I had exceeded the reinstall limits. Had no problems getting approval. It was just a nuisance. The few times I’ve called for install support was torture. Without the paid support, I got inexperienced personnel who worked strictly from the script, making me go through basic, non-related activities I had already done or that were not related to the problem, even after I detailed the steps I had already taken. After long periods of this I had to ask to have it escalated to to someone who really knew the answer. This particular problem is not bothersome enough to waste time like that.

    • in reply to: Patch slows boot to a crawl #1288709

      Ted and Clint:

Ted, I had just started the habit of checking each update/patch. As you say, the explanation is not sufficient or clear enough in some instances, even on the MS page it links to. Some I have hidden also. There was a patch a few weeks ago for my second system, which is XP based, that stopped the system from booting. The next day Secrets advised not to install it (it was the Office and >NET patches). I recovered by taking my C clone that sits on the shelf and cloning it back to the original C drive. I had just cloned it 3 days before. Fortunately I segregate all data/dynamic files to my D drive and it was not affected.

Clint, I frankly don’t remember if my MB has Bluetooth capability, and if it does whether it’s enabled or not. Will check both my manual and Bios. Since the MB is only 2 yrs old, it probably does.

      Thanks for your responses.

I’m answering my own question. After posting the above, I went back and reinstalled all 4 of the 7/12 updates and then uninstalled each with a reboot after each. I’d done that before but didn’t pay attention to the time of the reboots. The culprit appears to be KB2532531, the Bluetooth stack patch. Reading about it in more detail has also solved the question about a sudden bluescreen that appeared on my system yesterday. It basically said that there was a stack problem, and this patch deals with stacks for Bluetooth, which I do not use. It is now off my system for good.

Anyone else run into this particular patch problem or new bluescreen?

Running Win7 x64 and using TeamViewer, ( http://www.teamviewer.com/download/index.aspx ). It’s free for non-commercial use, and does everything one needs, including audio and video chats. I use it primarily to control another computer on my home network but also have used it with a friend in another city to exchange files. It’s user friendly and plays nicely with other programs.

    • in reply to: Screen Corruption (2007) #1065358

Thanks Legare. I’ve read through the entire thread and am trying 2 ideas. First, I’ve changed the default printer on this computer to one that is conncected physically, the Epson 2200 (even though it’s not online during the day). Previously, my default printer on this machine is set to the HP LaserJet 4M, which is physically connected to the networked computer. Second, I’ve backed of my video acceleration a tad. It doesn’t seem to make any visible difference and it may stop the corruption. I’m working in the dark here, but I may stumble on a solution.

Now, the workbook that is having these problems does have a chart sheet, although I don’t even look at the realtime chart until the end of the day. (By the way, this wb is accessing real-time stock market data during the day and using it in calculations.) The chart is bitmapped, and that thread mentioned that Excel 2007 is probably using printer drivers to build bitmaps. I don’t know enough about this topic to even comment.

So far, since the 2 changes I haven’t experienced any corruption, but the day is still young. Will let you know.

Ah.. never thought of this one, since during the hours that this workbook is running I never do printing. I have two main printers, none connected directly to this machine. They are connected to the second computer on my home LAN and I do not turn them on during the day. I realize the drivers are installed, however, and nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to problem causes. I have an Epson 2200, an Epson HP-LJ 4M, and 2 virtual printers, such as the PDF printer. Again none of the physical printers is turned on during the day, and the problem occurs even when no printing, real or virtual, is done.

I haven’t updated either the Epson or HP drivers for about 6 mos, so maybe it’s time to check. I do do XP updates and I assume that printer driver updates would show there also. Will check directly, however.

I’m coming to suspect that because Office 2007 has been optimized for Vista, and since Vista handles memory quite differently, I may never solve the problem until I upgrade to Vista — which won’t occur until Vista’s SP1 appears.

Can you give me a link to that other screen corruption email? I haven’t pulled it up on a search. Thanks.

    • in reply to: Caption anchoring (Word 2007) #1065310

      Andrew and Stuart:
Thanks to both of you. Andrew, you are correct in assuming that I’m trying to use Word like a page layout program. If all the functionality is there, it can substitute for Ventura. I just have to change my perception of how things work. Obviously, I’m not very familiar with the program yet, and have bought a book that focuses on Word’s advanced functions for documents. The metaphor is different and I have to get used to it.

Stuart, your tip is a good one and if it doesn’t overly complicate things in complex documents I’ll probably use it.
