    • in reply to: Smartphone data policy when an employee leaves #1275890

You guys don’t seem to live in the real world.

First of all, if I have the account set up on my phone, I can set it up on my PC, and copy all e-mails to a storage folder that exists only on the PC. And of course I do that to preserve my e-mails against the vagaries of corporate IT nuts.

Second, you are making important legal decisions without the benefit of competent legal advice. Even if there was a “policy” in place, and you had proof that the ex-employee was aware of it, have you committed a trespass in your enforcement of the company’s rights? You may need a court order to wipe the phone. And then you still can’t be assured that the ex-employee doesn’t have a copy of the data.

The moral is that if the ex-employee is not allowed to use the data, you must resort to the courts if s/he does misuse the data. The situation is the same with copies of paper documents. If the employee copied documents before leaving, or declined to return some documents, can you break into the employee’s home to retrieve them?

    • in reply to: Simple steps for backing up Web-based e-mail #1272300

Suppose I run both Windows Live Mail and Outlook 2007 or 2010. Can I set them up so that they both use the same message stores, and I thus only have one copy of my e-mail on my system?

Instructions for moving the location where Windows Live Mail stores e-mails on your PC.

Note: I suggest that you start by going to File and below that “Work offline.” This will insure that no messages are lost while you move the folders.

Click on Tools, and below that Options.
Click the “Advanced” tab, and then the “Maintenance” button near the bottom.
On the next window that pops up, click on “Store Folder” near the middle.
You will get a pop up that shows where your messages are stored now.
Make a note of this folder location/name.
If you want to change the location of the data, click on “Change” and navigate to the new location.

I don’t know if WLM will actually move the data. Shut down and restart WLM. If you do not see the old e-mails, then shut down WLM and manually copy the old folders to the new location. Restart WLM and you should see your e-mails. If all is ok, then click on File and then “Work online.”

    • in reply to: File size changes from 0KB to xKB after download #1188171

When the file is created, there is nothing in it – i.e., it has a size of zero bytes. After it is downloaded, it has the size of it’s contents, but the desktop display is not updated. The same would happen if it were in any directory / folder. Anything that forces a “refresh” would show the correct size.
