AskWoody could offer a weekly digest of new blog articles.

I wish to thank you for a suggestion that will make my job more time consuming!

Seriously, we occasionally run a “From the forums” piece in which I identify special aspects of the forums. Prior to Susan’s stewardship, this was a weekly feature. However, we found that it did not spur interest in the forums to any noticeable extent, and it was reduced in frequency accordingly.

I suspect the same would be the case for a blog digest. I suggest that when you read the newsletter, you hop over to the blog to see if you missed anything.

I did not know that AW is conducting a reader survey.

The survey was announced prominently in the Plus edition of the newsletters for three weeks, but only in the emails – not the online versions.

Susan’s mention of it didn’t even include a link to the survey!

Susan’s “From the Publisher” article in the newsletter was published in both the free and Plus newsletters. The Plus survey is not available to free subscribers, so we could not put the link there.

I’m a Plus member but have never seen an opportunity to be part of the Survey.

I’m sorry to say the survey is now closed. However, it ran for three weeks and was mentioned front and center at the top of the emailed Plus newsletters. The large banner in today’s newsletter announced that the survey was closed, but the prominent banner in the previous three newsletters just needed one click to get you to the survey.

Sorry you missed it. About 10% of our Plus members responded, a fantastic showing! I hope we catch you next year!

      where IS your blog?

The Home page itself is the blog.

Mac has a finite lifespan of support from Apple.

Yes, but it’s better than it was in the past. My ca. 2010 mini stopped getting updated at about the four-year mark.

This would change quickly if Macs were sold in any quantity to the US federal government. That’s why Windows has a 5+5=10-year cycle – GSA schedules.

This might change with Apple’s silicon now in all of Apple’s systems. It’s one thing to blame the other guy (e.g., Intel), and another to point at one’s own difficulties.

      Ports are very different (MacMini: 2 USB-C front, nothing on back;

I’m not following that. See Brian’s column for a photo of both the front and back. 2 USB-C front; 3 Thunderbolt, 1 HDMI on rear. Speaker jack also on front.

If Apple is a constant theme, I will find another source of PC information.

Better than us? Hard to imagine.

Seriously, we’re not turning into an Apple publication. But as I mentioned in my explanation, it’s hard to ignore this moment in time. And as you can see from other sentiments here, other Windows diehards are thinking the same thing.

Right now, I’m spending time developing Windows 11 topics for many months out, well beyond the end of this special series.

The online version of this week’s newsletter has a bad link

Now that is weird. I do a search and replace to change the placeholder FORUMLINK to the correct URL. In Brian’s article, the “Comment” line next to his name has the correct link, while the button at the bottom does not. (Microsoft’s own software, Visual Studio Code, made that mistake.)

      I fixed the verb.

      Thanks for the copy-editing work.

Thanks for doing this series of articles.

You’re welcome. Let us know how you feel about it at the end!

Ironically, this year I had increased my contribution to AW.

      Thank you!

      Piqued

I fixed it. Someday, we’ll have our crack copy wizard, Roberta Scholz, cast her discerning eye over more than just the newsletter. Not yet, though. So thanks for the ad hoc copy edit.

Overall, though, a very favourable review.

Even the bad reviews are good.

One thing to look out for on YouTube is clickbait. If the title of every video is “This is great!”, people will stop watching. So there’s always somebody who finds a little nit that can be used as clickbait.

why not go with the B series for an even bigger performance boost

I agree. But now is probably not the right time to buy. Intel is having trouble meeting demand, so the prices have been arbitrarily inflated. That is definitely not what Intel wants because its success will be based upon being very strong competitively. It can only control the higher asking prices by delivering volume.

      Might take a few months.

But in @krism’s case, he’ll get a boost from the 3070 to an A-series board, and now is definitely the time to buy those before they are completely supplanted by Bs. But as he notes, research will be needed to make sure about compatibility. It appears that the B-series has fewer issues, although Intel continues to push driver updates to me.

    • in reply to: Intel ARC graphics gains traction #2729303

      How are drivers?

Zero problem with photo and video editing, and with Windows components that use graphics.

I’m not the right guy to ask about gaming, which is where all the complaints were. To its credit, Intel has been working diligently and very publicly to address those issues.

You could also say that the hardware limitations of Windows 11 are anti-competitive …

      How so?

My old Intel-based Mac mini fell out of support; the next version of macOS would not run on it and I could not get updated versions of Safari. Stated another way, to get to the next version of macOS, a new Mac would have been required. It sounds analogous to me, but it surely was not an anti-competitive move on Apple’s part. What competition was being suppressed?
