same here but I am using the 2014 Deluxe version. Had a few problems 3 or 4 years ago which I think, based on internet info, related to having too much data. I archived or deleted a few years of checking and savings data which seems to have avoided the problem for now.

Don’t know if any apps need .Net.  But my original thought was why would MS upgrade .Net  on a unsupported OS?

Which speaking of:  MSE updated to 1l17 created definitions this AM so when is the real end of 7?

    • in reply to: Optional .Netframework Updates? #2085995

In the Jan update .Net 4.8 is checked.  Why upgrade to 4.8 if Win 7 itself will not receive further updates?  Strange!

Never did get offered 7868 or MSRT. Downloaded 7867 and MSRT and installed “manually”.

    • in reply to: More about the October change in Windows Update policy #1584222

Since I have 2 machines to update I have Win Update set to “Notify …but let me choose…” This month Win Update has not notified me about the Nov patch or the Office compatibility patch. It still shows only the Oct security and quality patch. Seems now that if you don’t let win update download and install automatically, you are on your own to identify the latest security patch. Luckily this month there is a Nov Security bulletin to find what it is. But some say the bulletins will not survive in the future. I did have win update search for updates but it just ran and ran and ran and…….. until I killed its process. Thank you MS. You treat your customers so wonderfully.

In response to OP’s first post. I found that I had to download the updates using my administrator’s account not my “every day use” account. Also I found I had to set Win Update to “Never check…” and reboot the machine , otherwise wusa.exe ran but never used cpu cycles. A window would open saying “Checking for updates on this computer” and would not go further. Disabling win update allowed running the update files quickly.

    • in reply to: How to completely reset Windows Update #1564619

My experience is this: Since I have 2 machines to update, I download the files a couple of days after they are released. I copy them to a USB drive for my wife’s laptop. For both I run them one by one. On my desktop I seldom have much of a problem. What I see is that running a file, it “freezes” on a small window that says “Searching for updates on this computer”. Sometimes this lasts for many minutes or “indefinitely”. Looking in task manager shows that the process WUSA (I think that is it) is not using any CPU cycles even though the little window still shows “Looking for updates…” If it goes on too long, I kill the process and start over again.

On both I applied recent “fix update” KB’s (not what’s in this article). They seemed to help the problem on the laptop. But it sill occurs on the laptop occasionally.

So when has Win Update is set to download updates but let me choose to install them, where does it store the downloads so I could run them one by one and copy to a usb drive to install on another ‘puter?

    • in reply to: Protecting your backup files from ransomware #1558995

One option if you have a separate internal disk for backups and “manually” backup to it: Using diskmgmt.msc in an administrator’s command prompt window, set the disk offline between backups. A bit more work but it makes the disk invisible to Win so hopefully ransom ware won’t see it either.

    • in reply to: Encrypted backup kicks ransomware to the curb #1553747

I assume that ransomware attacks as soon as installed. I would boot to a rescue CD (in my case Toto Backup) and restore the disk image thus eliminating the ransomware. Data loss would depend on how frequently one backed up the main online disk(s). Of course as mentioned previously, prevention is the best solution.

I’m wondering if this approach would work:

I have an internal disk for backups. Between backups I could take it offline using disk management. I assume that it would then be invisible to ransomware. Some thing like unplugging an external drive.

    • in reply to: Scammers taking advantage of GWX? #1532583

One scam I have had tried on me that I have not seen mentioned relates to MSE. On a couple of occasions a IE tab popped up declaring itself as a Microsoft Security Essentials notification of a virus or other treat. Of course being a UHEP (ultra highly experienced person, i.e. 75 years old with IT experience), I closed the tab without clicking on the offered repair. It looked very authentic but I doubted MSE would use an IE tab to notify of problems. But someone else might well fall for it. I’ve also had the MS phone calls and a few times kept them on the line for a while so they couldn’t bother anyone else. One even called back after a few minutes of silence on my side.

Strange!!!! It takes me to the page OK.
Here’s the link in plain text (copy and put in address field)

      askvg.com/how-to-disable-new-metro-boot-loader-and-bring-back-windows-vista-and-7-style-boot-loader-in-windows-8

Or search for the “how to …..windows -8” string

Doing the opposite in this article may help you if you want to return to the graphical boot menu:
