I too have had the same problems when analyzing the Hijackthis log. It is very detailed and takes a lot of time to check. You really have to go thru the entries one by one, those that you don’t recognize or are questionable needs a search to determine if this process is valid or invalid. This log can point to major issues or very small one. I am not an expert on this and will not recommend any changes because of that, I don’t want to give you advice on what I would do and then have it muck up your computer. At first glace you do seem to have a lot of stuff running in the background. How does your startup menuj look? I have always believed its best to be very lean on all my services, whether they be startup or background. I run malwarebytes and a few other programs often but manually. The only thing I do use other than my anti-virus in the background is WinPatrol, http://www.winpatrol.com/. Its a very small program but will notify you of any changes to your system, notabaly your registry. I see a lot of file missing’s at the end of your log, not sure what that is about. In the past I have had issues with my log too and not being an expert I have used this: http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/ Its free to join and they do a lot of hijackthis log files. I hate to not give you a better answer but its not my computer so……………..

One question I wondered about is have you thought about just saving whats important, flash drives are cheap and easy, and then doing a complete reinstall of your system? Often when things get so mucked up its better to just start from scratch. Good luck

Here is a database for start up entries: http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

To see what a particular process that is running you can use this to tell you what each does: http://www.processlibrary.com/

I would also recommend running HijackThis from TrendMicro. A simple program that you can save the results and post. This report may show some sketchy things going on as well: http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/

As I was afraid, shutting off everything in Norton (virus, antispyware, the firewall, intrusion and everything else in it) System Restore does its thing, then goes and reboots and upon completion of the reboot gives me the same error. Anybody have another solution? I do not use or have installed any backup software such as Acronis etc, just what comes with Win7 so the bug lies in here.

I must be missing something but here’s something that stands out to me. While the article is great it takes the approach as though you have just turned your computer on for the first time. For those of us who have used Win7 for a long time it would be nice to know exactly where these settings are rather than having to search for them without the benifit of a startup setup for IE8. Great article as always. Thanks

I think when you boil everything down its just a matter of personal preference. I use Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo, all for different things. I did jump onto the GMail bandwagon when it came out thinking this might be the best thing since sliced bread. Many people will not use or do not like Windows Live simply because its Microsoft. The ” I hate Bill Gates” thing. However it just seems to me this. At Google’s inception it was a just a wonderful search engine as we all know. But in the ensuing years it has grown as a company, it has grown into a behemoth just like Microsoft. If you have a problem you have to search page after page of the “Help” section, just like Microsoft. Forget sending an email to them, you can click on the link for Tech Support but its just a circle, I can’t find a link to them. One reason I don’t use it much and you can add this to the problems with GMail, one I can’t seem to fix. I’m sure it can and perhaps its a very obvious one but I do know that GMails Help section tells me “that its a known issue and they are working on it” . My issue with it is simple, it will not show images, no matter what I do, and i’m running a new computer. I view Windows Secrets Lounge on my Hotmail account so I cn see that little green logo guy. So its back to apple’s and orange’s for me. They all have good and bad things about each. There is no stand above the other email programs in my humble opinion.

Thanks for the answers guys. I have show all folders enabled but that was not my problem, I could open other folders in it. I’ll just keep playing around with it. I hate to pay for any program with the abundance of free stuff out there so I will take Gizmo Richards article on the best freeware out there and give his recommendation, Macrium Reflect a try.
