Well while I understand all of these changes for the reason’s that are obvious I’m not a fan of this. When independent entities start combining forces for the betterment of all it often often doesn’t work out the way people hope it will. Getting combined into a large business, while hoping for the same independence, often doesn’t happen. These decisions are made primarily for monetary reasons. I’ve been a paid member for years here and will continue to, this is a great place. Hopefully these changes will be smooth and not veer into something that gets away from the original intent, from Langa to Secrets to…..

Well you could also show them where it would show on the taskbar near the clock. Make sure to include the hidden taskbar item’s arrow.

If you are not planning to upgrade to Windows 10, you can disable OS Upgrade via policy. This will restore the regular Windows Update notifications. There are 2 ways you can do this.
      1. By editing the registry (see Step 2 in the following article: http://www.howtogeek.com/228551/how-to-stop-windows-7-or-8-from-downloading-windows-10-automatically/).
      2. Using Group Policy MMC snap-in: run gpedit.msc, expand Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components, select Windows Update Center and enable the “Turn off the upgrade to the latest version of Windows through Windows Update” policy.

I’m running Win 7 Home Premium. Apparently it doesn’t come with Group Policy. There is a work around that I found that has some sort of installer but for now I’m going to live with this issue. For now all I did was create a shortcut for Update on my desktop and I check it once a week.

Here’s my 2 cents. I’m having the same exact problem on my Win 7. It just started one day. I haven’t installed any new programs, no new AV etc. I have to think it’s caused by an Windows update. Hard to believe that no one anywhere nor Microsoft (ain’t they wonderful) has figured out what is causing this. I’ll just keep checking back to see if someone finds a true solution but for now I will just have to live with it.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to respond to my questions, it is very much appreciated. I’d love to try Bitlocker but it isn’t in Windows 7 Home Premium, only Ultimate and Enterprise editions.

I know all about TrueCrypt however many many still use it. I’m not trying to hide national secrets so this security will be fine. That said, anyone care to answer my 3 questions?

All should run seemlessly, I’ve been doing it for years with various free anti-virus programs and never had an issue. You get into problems when you run two anti-virus programs or two firewalls.

All will run seemlessly, I’ve been doing it for years.

    • Along with my anti virus I have Malwarebytes Pro is always on and runs in the background along with my AV. I don’t believe the free version does this. And yes, your AV is for virus’s and Malwarebytes is for malware/scareware etc. They do overlap at times.

      Great info, thank you

Thanks for the quick reply’s. Is TrueCrypt or any other for that matter able to easily encrypt an harddrive that has 3TB in it? I may use TrueCrypt in the end but the other I mentioned while not free is pretty economical. As far as rohos, I see it supports a usb flash drive but no mention of a large external hd.

Thanks everyone. Lot of good info here. I’ll look into all of these suggestions and in the end if I’m not comfortable I’ll just leave G alone.

This thread is closed for me.

    • in reply to: Can’t get rid of this – Help #1476569

A restore didn’t work. As I mentioned it was a failed install so not all the files are there. I was able to disable it but I don’t have either one of the files to uninstall. I’ve tried everything. Thanks for your suggestion Rick, much appreciated. I am going to reformate and then re-install Win7.

Please close this thread and thanks everyone.

Thanks everyone. System Restore in Safe Mode didn’t work either. I tried Process Explorer to try to get it stopped but that won’t work either. Avast is recognizing it as a rootkit but I’m not so sure. Malwarebytes Pro also does the same thing. I’m not so sure it even is a rootkit. I’ve run GMER and ComboFix and those don’t show it as one. I’ll give unlocker a try but I’ve already started backing things up. I think in the end I will just do a complete restore. Oh well.

    • in reply to: Best program for stopping system changes? #1476195

On the DeepFreeze webpage you have the option’s of buying different programs on the right side. You should see
the Free 30 day Trial and the Order Now button’s in Red. I use Chrome and that’s what I see. If you are not s
seeing them perhaps its an add-on that is stopping you from seeing it.

You have 4 program options, Data Igloo, Deep Freeze Server, Deep Freeze for Mac and Deep Freeze Standard.
For the single user program you use the Deep Freeze Standard link. Click it and now you will see the same
Red button’s except these just apply to the Standard program. Click Order Now then Buy Online and viola, there is the price.
You can use the Select Your Currency. US is $45.00, $39.43 Euro, etc.

I’ve got to think seriously about buying this program. It looks to good to be true and simple.
