    • You’ll be perfectly fine with installing KB3191855 only. It’s going to make offering of KB3178690 disappear.

Classifying KB3191855 one step below security has the positive effect of not generating a new trigger of the Vista Update Search issue.

    • KB3191855 is there, but not listed under Security Updates. Still it’s an important update.

If you were to avoid generating a trigger for the Windows Vista Update Search issue, you’d have to leave the Security Update for Excel 2010 out of the official supersedence chain.

This has been done before with KB3187022, a full-fledged successor of triggering KB3177725.

    • You’re free to skip KB3178690. KB3191855 supersedes it. 🙂

On a fresh installation of Windows Vista, no specific condition has been created yet. The issue can be fixed (temporarily) by installing the updates of Dalai’s list (current version).

Applicability of one or more updates from Dalai’s list has triggered the issue, making all of them inapplicable (installing them) fixed (un-triggered) it.

After installing Internet Explorer 9, the issue returns. It can be fixed by manually installing the Cumulative Security Update for IE9. Obviously something that became applicable by installing IE9 has retriggered the issue.

After installing MS Office 2003, 2007, 2010 or the Compatibility Pack the issue returns again. It can be fixed by installing the two updates for Compatibility Pack, Excel 2007, Word 2007, Excel 2010 or Word 2010.

Something that became applicable by installing Office has retriggered the issue.

On Patch Day, most of these become applicable again by being succeeded. The issue that was fixed 15 minutes to Patch Hour, even stalled for three months last time, gets refreshed.

On Windows XP the issue was triggered by release of new versions of the Cumulative Security for IE, as it is right now on Windows Vista.

If allegedly the issue is self-inflicted by users – what’s your explanation of it occurring on fresh installations?
