    • in reply to: Best Way To Back Up Main HDD To a Second HDD? #1537678

Using RAID on a home PC is not worth it IMO – I’ve experimented with this and it’s a lot of hassle for no particular benefit.
What I do is a daily incremental backup of my data to the second disk and a manual image backup to the second disk when required. I then copy the second disk to an external disk that lives in my fire/flood proof safe.

      cheers, Paul

Similar procedure here except that I use AllwaySync to backup key data to internal second HDD on a daily basis, Acronis to clone the main disk on a regular basis and Acronis full backup to external drive on a weekly basis. Last week the main drive failed to boot but booting to secondary drive worked and I was able to solve the problem – phew!

Thank you for continuing to provide excellent and timely information on patches.

Quick question – KN2991963 has gone AWOL from this latest update. Does that mean it’s ok to install?

Yes you can access the passwords online, you can even ask for repeat master password entry before accessing or editing individual entries.

And of course if you must, you can export everything to an openly readable file.

LastPass is the bees knees, I have the Premium version and use it across platforms. I don’t actually know what most of my passwords are, I let LP manage them for me, but I can easily find what they are if necessary.

I’m trying out SearchMyFiles it’s a standalone/portable program which has very customisable searches, including duplicate files and text search within files. It’s found stuff I’d forgotten about!

I also have the spacebar encrypted and generally no problems (Pro version, used on both 32 and 64 bit machines). However I have very occasionally experienced the scrambling of plain text in search bars or document writing, but normally this has gone after a reboot. So I would suggest 1. close and restart program or 2. reboot or 3. re-install with latest version.

    • in reply to: Changing DropBox ownership via Explorer? #1466255

The current owner can transfer ownership to you from within Dropbox see https://www.dropbox.com/help/242
You will then have ownership control of all current and future member shares and she can resign her membership.
But beware – you must have sufficient Dropbox space for both yourself and all the shared files.
Also – belt & braces – it’s always wise to take a local backup of the shared files once you’ve got ownership, and before she resigns from the share, until you’re sure everything has worked ok.

As Berton says, another solution might be to host the files on the Sports Club website, assuming it has one. But then you’d have to set up privacy/password access and couldn’t control access if a stranger got hold of the password.

Thanks, both. Yes I did read the article but just wanted to make sure. I’ll put it on ice for the time being, until I’ve had a few days running the 8.1 Update update.

    • in reply to: Windows Update and Ms. Bradley’s Patch Watch #1422698

Sorry to hijack/add to confusion but I’ve been having similar problems with updates being offered but not mentioned in (the excellent and very reliable) Patchwatch. Currently (November updates) I have W7 Security updates KB2862152 and 2868725 and also an optional update 2830447 which I can’t find in either current Patchwatch or archive. In the past I have waited a couple of months before going ahead and installing (so far with no ill effects) but I don’t like doing it – can anyone shed any light please?

    • in reply to: MSSE and Malwarebytes Pro question #1384882

I’m running MWBPro + Avast!Free with no problems whatsoever – although I did have to add MWB to Avast’s ‘allowed’ web access list (full details on the MWB help pages). I also run SpyBot S&D and CCleaner on a regular (manual) basis.

Another Quicken user here! Quicken 2001 running on both W7 32x and 64x with no problems whatsoever. Goodness knows what I’ll do if it ever fails to run, I rely on it so much.

There’s a review of the Firefox extension that links to a blog stating this plug-in sends data on every page you visit to bit.ly. I haven’t seen this refuted anywhere. Hardly the sort of thing you want to be suggesting that your readers install…

I too noted this and was deterred from installing the addon. A comment from WS would be much appreciated 🙂
