Thanks for that fine explanation and advice. I shall proceed as I was taught. “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” and “if in doubt, don’t”

      KB4497165is an Intel Microcode update.

Thanks PKCano, yes I was aware of that, just wondering why it’s not appeared before. Unless I hid it previously and it’s now un-hid itself  – it’s been a bit like Groundhog Day in recent weeks 🙂

So  ok to install that one?

    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 3: Get the February patches installed #2173040

Win10 1909 Pro Dell desktop with PKCano’s recommended registry settings. Feb patches installed this morning, no apparent issues.

wushowhide still showing KB4497165 available (Intel microcode update), but it didn’t come down the MS update chute.

    • in reply to: Is there a way to cheat Pause Update? #2172950

I’ve had W10 v1903 since new Dell desktop last September, updated to 1909 last year, all essential patches installed up to January, registry/pause settings set as per PKCano advice. Pause ran out today but just to be on the safe side I set connection to metered yesterday. I now see pause updates has been reset i.e. I can pause until 4th April.

Given Woody’s move to defcon3 I guess my next move is to install Feb updates when they become available

“There is a setting in the Settings app that allows you to uncheck Windows managing your printers. Settings\Devices\Printers and Scanners”

      I’ll second that!

      I use AllwaySync https://allwaysync.com/

Very flexible and very reliable but a lot of options so suggest you play with it using a test file and remote folder  and make sure the remote drive always take the same reserved drive letter, before you commit anything important. Once you’ve got it up and running to your satisfaction, the profile can be copied to another machine or OS as required.

I think there’s a limit on file transfer per month on the free version so check the website.

I had a similar problem after installing 1903 October updates. I could print from Win7 machine and android phone, but not from Win10 (Pro) despite seeing printer (Canon Pixma) in devices. Can’t remember the exact error message but something like ‘printer not on line’.

To echo @PKCano suggestion, I solved it by downloading and installing Canon device software instead of relying on plug’n’play which was how it was set up initially.

You and me both. I’m still using Quicken 98. Although I am keeping backups offline and a Win7 laptop in the cupboard if Win10 refuses to run it.

    • Just updated to 18th Sept signatures and quick scan ok again.

    • Noticed this, this morning. (W10 1903). Scanned about 29 files then exited. Thought no more about it as I needed to get on with things. Since I’ve got updates disabled I never thought (or had notice of) a silent update.

      Thanks for the explanation!

I use BitDefender Free. Very little impact on the system.

I agree. Avast has got too large and unwieldy for me. I also run Malwarebytes Pro

OpenOffice and Sumatra pdf for me. I also use Cutepdf which appears in my printer list, to quickly save anything in pdf format.

    • Last month I took the leap from a very old, slow and about to be terminated Win7 x32 system to a shiny new Win10 Pro 1903 installation. With all data and settings previously backed up, and the old drive still available on a usb connection, I have to say that I found the change relatively simple and the experience positive. I’ve spent the past few weeks clearing out the cr*pware, getting to know my way around all the back streets that I could find, and battening down the hatches ready for Patch Tuesday. I also bought a new tin hat, just in case. Everything bar Defender updates paused until 1st September, SSD cloned to spare  and so far holding steady at anchor.

Thank you Woody, Patch Lady and all the other major contributors to these forums.
