AskWoody PlusDecember 24, 2024 at 1:44 pm in reply to: No, Microsoft isn’t stealing your data to feed Copilot #2728338Thanks very much for the research Peter. I know you’re a thoughtful, well-intentioned researcher. I don’t trust Microsoft on this topic. And it’s unlikely I ever would.

AskWoody PlusDecember 19, 2024 at 10:37 am in reply to: DHS Says China, Russia, Iran, and Israel Are Spying on People in US with SS7 #2727055it all reminds me of a scene in the cult movie “The President’s Analyst”
Agreed. Although I never saw that movie. One can also benefit from looking into “predictive programming” practices in entertainment. And also, I have known a few adroit people who were intimately involved in the Stargate projects.

AskWoody PlusIn October-ish 2023 I found a way to disable the ‘required’, automatic Windows 11 Microsoft account connection to the cloud. Anyways I’ll have to go fish out where I found that, and again cornfigure it when Lenovo sends back my warranty repaired box in the New Year.

AskWoody PlusDecember 18, 2024 at 5:45 pm in reply to: US targets TP-Link with a potential ban on the Chinese routers #2726845Interesting, that. In addition to client-machine based software firewalls, I’ve been using a TP-Link Omada wired firewall router for a couple of years. In addition, I would trust exactly nothing the US government does at ‘face value’. “We’re from the government, and we’re here to help” is oxymoronic hyperbole.
The Warner Bros. cartoon character, Foghorn Leghorn came to mind. His stentorian style of speaking was (in the 1990s) said to be patterned after a US senator of that era. But here’s a ‘newer’ article which seems closer to the truth, by Jerry Beck. Once-upon-a-time my (then) wife and I knew and worked with people who included Mr. Beck, Chuck Jones, Linda Jones, Noel Blanc (Mel’s son), and Ruth Clampett (Bob’s daughter).

Perfect. Thank you! That’s what I thought but it’s been long enough that I had to do this that I wasn’t sure that Microsoft hadn’t changed anything.

So far, your option makes the most sense because it’s mostly automated and there’s less baby-sitting involved. If I “keep nothing” will the reinstall wipe and replace all partitions? That’s what I’d want.

AskWoody PlusDecember 18, 2024 at 10:30 am in reply to: How do I setup t wo monitor screens on Windows 11-23H2 #2726719You didn’t give much info about it. But, guessing from what you provided (I run two ViewSonic monitors on 11) ~ I use the Windows Display settings to configure what you’re wanting. And I also use the iRotate app because both of my monitors can pivot. iRotate has Tray icons showing both monitors.

Thanks. But it seems like reinstalling the OS and nuking the existing partitions would be simpler for me.

Lenovo wants Bitlocker “Off” before they get it. That’s one reason why I want to wipe it / maybe reinstall the OS on the one and only existing drive before they get it.

AskWoody PlusDecember 17, 2024 at 3:47 pm in reply to: What’s the Quickest Way to Wipe a Windows 11 System Drive? #2726546As it’s an SSD you only need to delete files and run the garbage collection routine (TRIM).
The original 2 TB SSD still has Lenovo’s original *but corrupted* OS. Plus all my private data files. My porpoise in considering just wiping the drive was to delete all my private data. But since the new OS will reside on a separate, dedicated drive, I wonder if it just might be faster to somehow wipe the drive rather than selectively removing all my private data.

Why it that, please? Also, I’ve never opened up the inside of the computer and all the hardware exists in the same configuration as it was delivered to me.
