AskWoody PlusYes, I’m getting wonderfully paranoid fantasies of sabotage by MS! But the truth is probably closer to the server not being able to cope with the volume of traffic? (My guess.)

AskWoody PlusSeptember 22, 2017 at 5:28 am in reply to: A roundup of ongoing problems with this month’s Windows and .NET patches #133908Many thanks for the tip. However, having done that, the subcomponents of KB 4041090 for Windows 7 64-bit are all still described as x 86. What I’m saying is that I can’t find another version of KB 4041090 whose internal components are described as x64 anywhere. So I am wondering whether this version will fit both 32- and 64-bit Windows 7?

AskWoody PlusSeptember 21, 2017 at 8:06 pm in reply to: A roundup of ongoing problems with this month’s Windows and .NET patches #133844Also interesting, the four subcomponents of KB 4041090 for Windows 7 64-bit are all labelled x86. At first I thought this a mistake, but looking through the Microsoft Update Catalogue the apparent error seems consistent. Does one install and wait to see what happens?

AskWoody PlusAbsolutely – I’m all for diversity. I’ve got to learn how to value everybody else if I expect them to put up with me. Besides, I have a Jewish friend who is getting all excited about Yom Kippur and now I know what to say back to her!

AskWoody PlusAugust 28, 2017 at 2:10 pm in reply to: Microsoft patches buggy Windows 7 patch, KB 4039884 solves the dual-monitor rendering problem #130903I’ve come to the conclusion that certain individuals have a bit of an obsession with Group B – our philosophy tends to come under attack every time MS throws out a buggy patch (and here we have a buggy hotfix to fix a buggy patch!). I install patches manually where necessary and use WU regularly for relevant patches that will come down that chute, but I am very selective and very, very cautious about installing anything. I was following that procedure long before this website invented ‘Group B’ and I may still be following it long after these individuals have found something else to attack……………………….my age and my PC’s age permitting, of course. Why not: I’m still surfing problem-free!

AskWoody PlusJuly 26, 2017 at 5:16 pm in reply to: MS-DEFCON 3: Some lingering problems, but it’s time to get Windows and Office patched #126565Oh, bless you! For fear of this happening to me I shall wait a little longer before installing KB 4025337. Both my P.C.s (laptop & desktop) are loved and cherished museum pieces, and fit well in the somewhat dated repository that is my home.

AskWoody PlusJuly 19, 2017 at 4:50 pm in reply to: Another bug in a security patch only fixed in a rollup #125617To be honest, telemetry has always been the least of my concerns. I’m just happily keeping my P.C.s fully functional the best way I know how. Shame if it upsets people – but they are my P.C.s.

AskWoody PlusJuly 18, 2017 at 5:37 pm in reply to: Another bug in a security patch only fixed in a rollup #125430Unquestionably, Yes. I adopted a “Group B” approach (prior to discovering this website) after months of computer problems caused largely by buggy updates – although it took a P.C. technician to explain that to me. Since adopting this approach (which I find quite straightforward and not at all time-consuming) I have had no computer problems, at least none that I haven’t been able to resolve myself. Nary a one in over 18 months now. Thanks to the warnings provided on this site, I chose not to install KB 4021558. I should be fine when, in due course, I install KB 4025252 – the updates are cumulative. To date, then, no real problem. I realise of course that one day this may change, but I’ll deal with that situation when it arises. I’m slightly intrigued however by the issue so many people have with the “Group B” approach who don’t follow it – surely it’s up to each individual to maintain their P.C. in the way that works best for them? I don’t waste my time challenging the members of “Group A” to justify their approach. Install whatever you like; it’s your machine!
