I am so sorry to read this, my sincere sympathies to his family and friends. I also came here originally because it was a safe haven for us Win7 hold-outs and i’m glad to see his legacy still carrying on.

    • Yes, i am aware they are fundamentally the same and i learnt that mainly from you and reading this site for several years. What confused me is that up until last month there were separate updates for Windows Embedded Standard but as of this month those have disappeared. I just don’t think Microsoft have any intention of fixing this and looking at the comments on My Digital Life it does appear to be fixable.

    • So, is my understanding correct that there are no more Win 7 embedded updates? And if you install the Server 2008 R2 update it breaks older browsers? That’s a shame but it was a good run, i can’t see Microsoft having any intention of resolving this going forward. I’d be curious to know if installing the Net Framework updates also causes unintended consequences.

    • It’s definitely been snuck in to KB5017373 because i just installed that and only that and there it was. They’ll do anything to sneak a bit of telemetry in.

Very curious. Attempting to backup the ms-msdt entry results in an error message that it cannot be found and sure enough, it’s not listed in the registry. This is on a Win7 system by the way, does anyone else not see it? So to speak. Neither does the ScriptedDiagnostics entry exist for me but i just assumed that’s only for newer Windows versions. However, the search-ms entry is present in the correct location. It’s another reminder to not open anything one doesn’t recognise, same as it ever was.

Edit: Actually, regarding ScriptedDiagnostics – i have had the troubleshooting wizard in action centre disabled for years so maybe that’s why it’s not listed.

Edit2: I noticed a number of users over on the ArsTechnica article also don’t have the ms-msdt registry key – https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2022/05/code-execution-0day-in-windows-has-been-under-active-exploit-for-7-weeks/

Some saying the key only exists if Office is installed or specific versions of Office even though the software is present on the system. I have never had any version of Office installed so maybe that’s why.

Another month and the .NET updates giving me that old headache feeling yet again. Does anyone know why they are re-released? Just metadata changes or what? The sizes are identical.

    • in reply to: Is Windows 11 ready? Are we ready? #2433262

I would argue that Win10 has never been ready which is why i still find it astonishing it’s now coming to EoL. I’ve been coming here for years and i’ve lost count of the complaints of users being the eternal beta testers when a feature release screws things up yet again. Progress is a comfortable disease i suppose…

It’s curious why the author fails to mention this or indeed why his articles don’t include Win 7 in the discussion at all. I’ve been noticing this for a while now in the newsletters and whereas once i felt like this place could still be welcoming to Win 7 holdouts it feels like it’s increasingly being pushing to the side. Maybe it’s just me.

Yes, as i am now learning. Thank you.

    • in reply to: Have you done a privacy checkup? #2422572

      Read his update…

EDITED TO ADD (1/12): I was wrong. DuckDuckGo does not provide privacy protections when searching using Google.

I am quite surprised someone like Schneier could miss this, i always assumed it was obvious that G would know what you’re searching for since you get redirected but i guess not. Although it does seem to offer some protection from G snooping which i didn’t realise.

    • in reply to: A question on Commenting Systems #2422573

Same for me just now and i also haven’t posted anything in quite a while though i have logged in recently.

    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 3: Patching is unclear #2353697

For what it’s worth i installed KB5000851 and after a couple of test prints i’m not experiencing any issues. I just printed a test page and a couple of graphical elements and a table in a blank document but all fine here.

    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 3: Patching is unclear #2353494

Similar set up to me except i have a different model of Pixma so i’m curious if you’ve tried test printing some elements like tables and such? I’ll be trying this myself after i update.

This month is yet another good example of why Microsoft need to start testing their patches properly again and also why i will not be pressured into upgrading to the eternal beta that is Win10 when every month is like a game of Russian roulette. The ghacks article on this shows a snapshot of just how furious people are over this latest nonsense – https://www.ghacks.net/2021/03/21/update-woes-that-never-end-microsoft-halts-patch-of-a-patch-of-a-patch-rollout-to-fix-printing-issues/

Also in regards to paid membership – i have to say the small expense has more than paid for itself with the amount of help i’ve had through this place over the years. Whether that be the GWX control panel (which absolutely saved my hide more than once) to the sterling work that abbodi86 continues to do, to name just two examples.

Strong passwords and two factor authentication! Which is becoming increasingly essential, and not just an SMS text either but a one time password through an app. For android i use a FOSS alternative (https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.liberty.android.freeotpplus/) and for Keepass there are various plugins (https://keepass.info/plugins.html). No cloud (someone else’s computer) options for me, thank you.

I was also trying to find that site which shows you the websites which support 2FA but it turns out the original domain was taken over so it’s been temporarily relocated – https://2fa.directory/

Interesting. I see two unsuccessful logins from China in the last month and like Susan they are both through my Skype username which i never use. Does anyone know how to delete just the Skype account but retain the Outlook account? I can’t find where to do this because of course they want to make it as difficult to find as possible.

edit: Well, according to NordVPN they won’t allow you to unlink your Microsoft and Skype accounts which is unfortunate.
