    • in reply to: SD card format errors #2750243

I have used Steve Gibson’s InitDisk to fix 4 usb drives that were behaving similar to your description. (constantly requiring scan disk & some that could not format). I have not run on SD cards, but believe I read in his forum that it worked on SD. Hope is helpful.

I have not been offered FF 135 yet either. Don’t know on Thunderbird, since I don’t use it.

    • in reply to: How many websites are on the Internet and other tech trivia #2744689

Mmmmm… I wonder how many questions there are. After 100 questions I stopped with 35% correct and the realization that the more questions I answered the less I knew. In other words I had to stop because my % correct kept dropping and my fragile ego could not take it. LOL

    • The banks being sued have also automatically opted customers into to Paze which is digital wallet payment option. I was opted in about 6 months ago. I haven’t seen any vendors where I shop online accept Paze. I am concerned about the safety of being automatically opted in to a program which does not appear to have a way to opt out of. The following website explains the program a bit.    https://clark.com/personal-finance-credit/clark-ignore-paze/      I have also read and watched the videos on the Paze website.

Ben, When I went to purchase spinrite 6.1 as a first time buyer, I am seeing $89.00 and not $65 + tax as stated in your article. Did the price go up? Thank you.

    • in reply to: Does the no@thankyou.com still work? #2726780

Thanks for asking this question Alex. I have an extremely slow internet and always do updates after the install. Still hope this is possible with a new PC coming with 24H2.

    • in reply to: Default blank pages on LibreOffice Writer #2717922

Hi SP47, Not sure if will be helpful to you or not: Shortcut keys can add a page break. i.e. pressing the Ctrl Key + Enter will add a page break. If you go to a blank page, with your cursor in the upper left corner of the blank page, press the backspace key. Does the extra page go away? I am using vr 7.3 L/O in Mint, no issues with blank pages.

    • in reply to: Can someone remind me how to limit search just to PC ? #2712781

Hi Alex, Double check and focus on the Explorer entry on your brother’s PC. In March 2024, I initially manually added the Explorer folder (new key) and DisableSearchBoxSuggestions (D-Word 32 bit) to a wrong path in the registry and it didn’t work. Once I put the entries in the correct place in the registry, search has been working without web searches as expected. Currently if I change the DisableSearchBoxSuggestions value to (0) false, I get web search results similar to your image in your post #2712709. Good luck.

    • in reply to: Mozilla Firefox and ESR Updates 2024 #2707495

I am only seeing expected behavior. There are 2 esr versions of firefox. The newest current version of FF ESR intended for Windows 10 and 11 is 128.3.0. The legacy version of FF ESR which works on Win 7 & 8.1 is 115.16.0. If you try to download from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/115.16.0/releasenotes/ and you are currently using Win 10 or Win 11 to do your download there is a box that says download current version. You will get the newest version 128.3.0 intended for Win 10 & Win 11 as expected. When I am on my Win 8.1 OS and use the same link, I got a prompt that said I am running an outdated OS, but clicking the download link downloaded 115.16.0 as expected for my OS. Use the ftp link provided by Microfix for 115.16.0 to get the download you want and avoid confusion. I downloaded 115.16.0 from the ftp site and checked the hash in case you were still concerned. Hash matched fine.

Is the smaller file size supposed to be 115.16.0 and the other is supposed to be 128.3.0?

Yes. I am not seeing anything unusual at the moment. I typically use the ftp site and check the hash if I have any concerns.

    • Another Luddite here. No smart phone apps, no bit coin usage, use cash whenever possible. I only use my ATM card at the issuing bank; inside the bank preferably. Two of the articles posted by Alex mentioned these ATM hacks typically require physical access to the ATM. One of the articles stated that 92% of the ATM hacks required physical access. Since I have had ATM issues over weekends, I avoid using ATM’s after hours and on holidays. Yes, Nibbled to death by ducks, I also feel increasingly pressured to install smart phone apps. After all, these apps typically make the job easier for the institution or person you are dealing with. Likely my first required app will be an authentication app since it is assumed everyone uses smartphones.

    • in reply to: Troubles with mice and keyboards. #2701912

Also have has some bad luck with Logitech mice. The mouse on my MK700 Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse set stopped working several years ago. The keyboard still works fine. I added a Microsoft 1850 wireless mouse which is smaller and half the weight of the Logitech mouse. I read somewhere that they are discontinuing Microsoft mice so I bought several of the same style. I constantly drop the Microsoft mice, but have only ever lost one and that was because it fell right on & cracked the wheel. If you are interested the prices are still reasonable on Ebay but are very expensive on Amazon. The Microsoft 1850 wireless mouse is ~ 2.25 inches wide, 4 inches long, & 1.5 inches tall at its highest point. FYI – I don’t use the Logitech drivers.

    • Had issues updating MS Office Professional Plus 2021 from Version 2406 (Build 17726.201160 click to run) today. My update pattern is to have office updates disabled until I am ready to update. Since I did not have any issues when I updated in June and July, I thought I was free from this updating issue. Today when I enabled auto updates and selected update now I got the Update Error 30088.27.  Tried multiple times throughout the morning with same results. After restarting the PC and trying again, updating proceeded normally without errors and now I am at Version 2408 (Build 17928.20114 click to run)
