AskWoody PlusI was able to get into safe mode by intercepting the startup. From there I tried the startup repair, which failed. Then the system restore, which gave the message “failed to extract a copy of the directory.” I tried to go back again to look for something else, but the PC shut down. Upon restarting I missed the safe mode point, and the PC started normally. It hasn’t been turned off since.

AskWoody PlusIt turns out that, unbeknownst to me, the hidden administrator account was turned on in Safe Mode, while I was looking for it in the normal boot up. After I had found it, I was able to reestablish my previously existing administrator account. Thanks to both of you for your help.

AskWoody PlusI could not restore through the recovery option (or any other way).

AskWoody PlusActually there was a system restore choice which I was eyeing while I was going through the previous suggestion. That will be next up to try.

AskWoody PlusUnfortunately this approach did not allow me to modify any user accounts. If the purpose was to display a normlly hidden administrator account, it was unsuccessful.

AskWoody PlusNovember 17, 2011 at 3:32 pm in reply to: Email download failures and Outlook stops working #1307146I don’t get Paypal messages, and the problem doesn’t seem to be those described in that post. I suppose I can use my Thunderbird application if Outlook fails altogether.

SR
AskWoody PlusThat worked fine. Thanks.
