Also- go ahead and laugh, but faxing is still one of the more secure ways to send sensitive info- definitely better than an email attachment.  We use faxing when appropriate.

My low-tech solution for a flat keyboard is a piece of scrap wood with two shallow holes that accept the small folding “feet” under the rear edge of the keyboard.  Not clear in photo, but the edge of the wood block is beveled to permit the feet to rest in the bored holes.  This is a Dell keyboard.

PM me if you want a similar one- no charge- I have a shop.IMG_1366

    • And whose fault is that? Hint- look in the mirror.

If you are in the 50% who vote, please disregard this line.  For the other half- merely being appalled does not change anything.

Before I update a BIOS I ask myself if my system is buggy in any way. I also want to know exactly what the BIOS update is supposed to do: what vulnerabilities and/or bugs is it supposed to fix?

Why would you treat a BIOS update differently from any other?  Are BIOS updates irreversible?

    • Too bad that does not stop one from holding public office,

And whose fault is that?  Hint- look in the mirror.  US voter turnout is a dismal 50%- AFAIK, lowest of world’s democracies  The so-called “silent majority” can’t seem to get themselves to the polls, so the extremists, who are more committed (perhaps should be “committed”🙂) get their extreme candidates elected- both far left and far right.

As an Ask Woody member for just 7 years or so now, my cyber education has flourished in this atmosphere of civility and helpful resources in this current age of acrimony and petulance.

My few interactions with Woody before he retired were, as all have said, models of clarity and patience. Grateful for his guidance, readily dispensed, with no eye-rolls or judgment.

Condolences to Woody’s family.  He has left a fitting and. I suspect, a lasting legacy.

    • You may well be correct.  But the scourge of social media amplifies the feelings of insecurity and inadequacy, driving kids to self harm and suicide.  As Brian Livingston points out, the rise of this phenomenon eerily tracks the rise of social media.

    • One reason these problems have morphed into an epidemic is that these kids’ parents are as addicted as the kids.  Sometimes, when a school cellphone ban is proposed, indignant parents threaten authorities with the claim that they need to be able to contact their kids at a moment’s notice.

So how did previous generations of kids manage to become successful adults without cellphones and social media?

I think we can assume China is for China.  Chinese leadership has confirmed right along that they see China as the rightful world leader and will take whatever steps it deems necessary to make that a reality.

China is currently building a ginormous underground military complex that would survive a nuclear hit.  When completed, in about 2 years, one could conclude China might be more willing to go to war with the US over, for example, Taiwan.  During that 2-year window, they may succeed in their as yet failed efforts to develop a missile capable of delivering a nuke to North America.

And a tactical advantage for China is that Xi, as the holder of supreme authority, needs no approvals to substitute action for words.  Looks like the only thing holding him back is lack of sufficient weaponry.

Thanks for this eye-opener.  What is the takeaway for us lowly computer users?

    • in reply to: Full system backups in Mint #2730973

OP here- all responses much appreciated.  The original purpose of this thread was to identify an alternative to Veeam, my previous choice, which gave me some difficulty after updating to Linux Mint 22.  Those difficulties now overcome, substantial guidance here:

I’ll be staying with the Veeam app going forward.

Two successful backups now completed.  Looks like I’m back on track with this.

Further efforts- first 5 to HDD used previously, 6th to alternate target (64GB stick).  Note the widely differing elapsed times. Neither target medium shows any data.1st-backup-Success

Aargh, spoke too soon.  Had one good “test” update a couple of days back, today backup attempts fail with a message “warning” or “failed.”  No clue why, same pc, same destination, same everything.  But a tech agent on the Veeam blog suggests that Mint 22 is the problem, as it is not officially supported.

But if true- why did it work the first time?
