If you’re using 0patch against PrintNightmare, DO NOT apply the July 6 Windows Update! Not only does it not fix the local attack vector but it also doesn’t fix the remote vector. However, it changes localspl.dll, which makes our patches that DO fix the problem stop applying.

AskWoody LoungerYes, the Insty Connect and Mofi both use a cellular connection while StarLink uses a satellite connection… but the end result is the same; connection to the world wide web.
Prices for Insty connect are offered on their website ($524 / $1024 plus ~$50 per moth cellular data plan) vs StarLink ($499 + $50 shipping + $100 per month connection fee):
The main difference between these two Insty connect models is the type of cellular modem used (Category 12 LTE 4G modem vs Category 20 LTE 4G+5G modem)

AskWoody LoungerIf one does that, first must make sure that the version of macOS (le’s say Mojave” is fully updated before upgrading (let’s say, to Catalina). Otherwise both the update to Mojave and the upgrade to Catalina will race each other to install and the upgrade will fail.
I’m not sure how the “race” upgrade condition could happen? The Catalina Patcher tool downloads the latest full version of Catalina offered by Apple (19H2) and then offers you the option to create an external bootable installer. You then use this bootable drive to partition the disk, upgrade / install Catalina, install post install patches, open terminal… (plus all the options were / are offered from the recovery partition).
Having this bootable drive is mandatory in order to reinstall the post install patches after running CatalinaOTAswufix. CatalinaOTAswufix will cause the machine to bootloop after installing the update to 19H524. To stop the bootloop you must boot into the bootable drive and re-run the post install patches. Don’t forget to take your machine out of the “beta” update release program (Link: CatalinaOTAswufix by jackluke)

AskWoody LoungerI’ve also been considering starlink but it seems really expensive. Another option I’ve been looking at has been the yet to be released Insty Connect. The Insty would be be $50 cheaper per month (assuming a $50 cell plan) then starlink and it would be portable. Insty also uses much newer technology than the previous top of line cellular modem/router made by Mofi.

AskWoody LoungerDon’t forget, your total bill may be up to $7 higher than the listed phone plan by the time all the added taxes and fees are included.
PCmag did a write up on phone plans: The Best Cheap Phone Plans for 2021. Maybe you’ll find a better deal.

AskWoody Lounger+1 on finding rEFInd
Personally I would not dual boot and just run Linux on that old mac but…
If you are going to dual boot / repartition you might as well bring that unsupported macBook up to a currently supported OS.
Links to run macOS Catalina on your Unsupported Mac:
The Catalina Patcher will allow the creation of install media (19H2) and the CatalinaOTAswufix will allow update to the latest version (19H524) after installation.
Now back rEFInd. The file you want is the binary zip file found on the getting rEFInd from Sourceforge page via the rodsbooks website. The proper installation is demonstrated by this youtube video: rEFInd: How to Install and Boot Alternative OS on Mac. However, I’ve found that installing rEFInd via a Linux session works just as well. Using the refind-install script from the binary zip file should be all you need.
A couple of tips.
- Backup your files folders!
- If updating to Catalina, let the CatalinaOTAswufix run. I thought the machine was hanging on the first screen, the progress bar was full and it appeared that nothing was happening. The first screen takes 10 minutes to move on to the next step.
- Create and keep a separate USB flash drive created via the Catalina patcher tool that contains the macOS installation files along with the post install patches.
- Using the minus sign (-) allows you hide boot options in the rEFInd menu screen.
- After you install updates you may need to re-run the rEFInd-install script.
Best of luck. Let us know how it went.

Typing the search sting and then hitting the enter button will display the full list.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 30, 2021 at 7:37 pm in reply to: Find the cable modem that’s just right for your ISP #2338863@DriftyDonN: I feel your frustration with Frontier. I’ve found that calling your local location provides much more knowledgeable / helpful / useful information. Local Florida location phone numbers can be found from this link: https://frontier.com/corporate/retailstores/florida
Again, if you want eliminate the Frontier router without changing the ONT you would need to setup a MoCA WAN. Details can be found here: How to use a MOCA WAN bridge?

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 20, 2021 at 5:08 pm in reply to: Find the cable modem that’s just right for your ISP #2336287@DriftyDonN: You need to call Frontier and ask them to switch your ONT from MoCA WAN to Ethernet WAN or place a MoCA adapter between the ONT and your router. Did you watch the YouTube video shared in this post?: https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/find-the-cable-modem-thats-just-right-for-your-isp/#post-2335945
Pay attention to what is said about the ONT (Starts @1 minute 15 seconds in). Every setup is different. It depends on your combination of internet, voice (phone) and TV along with your fiber link rate. It’s up to you to do your homework and order the correct equipment for your particular situation. Do you have GPON or BPON ONT? You might need a truck roll.

- Your own router
- A MoCA adapter
- MoCA Point-of Entry Filter
- Ethernet Cable(s)

AskWoody LoungerTo reactivate my “digital license” I had to first use one of Microsoft’s generic install keys.
A list of these keys can be found here: Generic Product Keys to Install Windows 10 Editions.
Make sure that you select the correct edition for your install.

AskWoody LoungerDecember 3, 2020 at 6:35 am in reply to: on 20H2 using wifi for internet – GRC says vulnerable #2316790@PaulT : I think you misunderstood the $70 issue. @Krism was just stating that their internet service price is going to increase from $30 to $70 once the introductory price / time expires.
@Krism : please read this article: What are Open Ports?
As everyone else has stated, using a trusted VPN would be your only solution if you do not trust the Comcast Business WiFi.
Depending on the make and model of your wireless router you should be able to setup a wireless connection from your router to the Comcast access point using “bridge” mode in your router. VPN profiles can also be setup within your router so that every device that connects to your network is routed through the VPN.
If your wireless device does not support these functions natively, your device may be supported by third party firmware.
Just an FYI: Do not use the firmware recommended via the DD-Wrt Router database without reading through the forums first. Be sure to use the latest WORKING build for your device.

For those interested you can read more here:

The firefox port has cut ties but will continue to develop.
For those using edge, jspenguin2017 has stopped development and you should switch to the normal uBO.
Another FYI: nikrolls has stopped his port of uBO for edge.
