      Hi,
      Thanks for a great article!

Don’t know if anybody else has experienced trouble with the WinMend Auto Shutdown download page link given in the article, but my current version of Trend Micro Internet Security has blocked that site as being dangerous! url: http://www.winmend.com/auto-shutdown/

Thought it unusal to be referred to a suspect website or it is just that Trend is being overly protective?

Anyway thanks again for all the great info.

Hi Debbie Thank you for your suggestion. Are you sure that is all you did to get the printer to work? All you did was change the IP address on the host computer? 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.10?

      Hi Jim,
Like you I had also made numerous attempts to get it working, since I can’t find the info I used I will try and list the steps I did and what both my computer settings are now.
Win7 pc is connected directly to the printer (my printer does not have network capability, hence my need to get it to work)
Both Win7 (64bit) and Vista (32) pcs are wireless connected to the network and I had to set their Workgroup names to the be the same name in my case “Workgroup”. The network is secure and each computer logs into it as required.
On the Win7 pc I set the “Share this printer” setting for this printer in the Printer properties and gave it a unique name.
In the Network and Sharing Center set both pcs to: Network Discovery, File Sharing and Printer Sharing etc. The Vista pc is set to private network while the Win7pc is set to Homegroup. (Don’t know if that makes any difference)
Made sure that both pcs in the Network Connections settings had the “Link-lay Topology Discovery Mapper I/O Driver” & “Link-lay Topology Discovery Responder” were set. (As you can see your wifes computer etc this is obviously already set.)
On the Win7 pc in Network Connections Propeties under Internet Protocol Ver 4 (TCP/IPv4) properties I set a static IP address: eg using your IP address above I set the following:

      IP Address: 192.168.1.10
      Sub-net mask: 255.255.255.0
      Gateway ID: 192.168.1.1
      WINS & DNS Severs: 192.168.1.1

On the Vista pc added a new printer – “Network Printer” and selected the printer on the Win7 pc with the unique printer name I created earlier when I setup to share the printer. (So now I have two printers listed for the same printer – one for direct connections and the other to use when on the network.)

Please note that I can only print from the Vista pc when the Win7 pc is on.

Hope the above makes sense and is of some help.

      Debbie

PS I found the following link that I did also use that may be of help for you: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Networking-home-computers-running-different-versions-of-Windows

Hi, This is my first post here, so hopefully it all goes well.

In regards to your printing problem – I too had the same problem, 2 laptop pcs – one Win 7 the other a Vista Laptop on a wireless network, both located in different areas. The Win 7 laptop is directly connected to the printer and the Vista laptop PC although able to see the printer was unable to print to it over the wireless network – even after installing the printer as a network printer.
I have the printer shared on both computers.
To make it work was to give my Win 7 Laptop PC a static address (I used 10 instead of 1 at the end of the address, to allow for enough connections for any other devices you may have on the network). Restarted both computers, then, I reinstalled the printer as a network printer onto the Vista Laptop and since then the Vista laptop prints happily to the printer.

NB: I’m sure I found the information here on the Windows Lounge – sorry I thought I had printed it out so I could give the link, but can’t seem to find it at the moment.

      Hope it helps.

PS: I know nothing about networks etc – just glad it worked for me!
