    • UPDATE 2: But I see there are many entries like this in the past. So what is causing these recent operations to mess up my Taskbar? And it’s not every time a
      Special Logon” happens.

These messed up my taskbar and my icons:

      But many others did not.

    • I suspect that what is also a major contributing factor is the food young people (and most everyone) eats. Today, it is more “poison” than “food”. Until that is fixed, the problem will remain.

    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 4: Beware of clickbait #2751183

I applied February’s patches to my Windows 11 “23H2” computer. After all the various reboots I finally got to the point where my computer started up, and I had totally black screens on all of my 3 screens. “Oh, no”, I said. I rebooted a couple of times and still saw nothing but black screens. So I decided to SHUT DOWN, not RESTART. I waited 10 seconds and then turned my computer back on. This time I saw a notice that told me that Explorer had failed 3 times and that “ExplorerPatcher” was probably the cause and I needed an update. I clicked on a link, the computer did its thing, and all became well. So if this happens to you running ExplorerPatcher, please take note and don’t panic. I did see multiple .dmp files created, but I did not investigate those further – I simply deleted them.

I suppose you are not familiar with the text editor named TextPad. I use this all the time, for everything. I cannot tell from your article what makes TextWorx better or more capable than TextPad. Can you offer any opinions based on your experience? Thank you.

    • in reply to: Can you use a free password manager, or must you pay? #2639636

I use a Chrome browser called Slimjet. I downloaded and installed the BitWarden extension, but I find the instructions hopelessly confusing. Why do I need a BitWarden account? Why should I send my credentials over the web to someone I don’t know? I just want to save my credentials on my local computer and have the browser fetch them from my local computer, without saving those credentials within the browser itself. I downloaded the .pdf file “Password Manager Browser Extensions”, but I find the instructions impossible to understand. From where do I create a folder? There is no Settings tab. There is no “Folders” item from a “settings list”. What are they looking at that I can’t see? Why should this be so complicated? So far, I hate BitWarden and I don’t see how you can recommend it. I downloaded the Windows desktop portable app, but I don’t think I will install something that is 223 MB in size. Why so much bloat? All in all, this has been a bad experience. Can someone help me understand my failings? Thank you.

I absolutely HATE software that installs itself where it thinks I want it. No, I want to tell everything what I want, not what it wants. So this software fails miserably in that regard. I suggest you do NOT recommend software that does not allow custom installation. Thank you.

    • in reply to: Master Patch List for 10-10-2023 #2594832

I have done the .reg file solution and also the Group Policy solution. Neither work. I am still stucj with Copilot (Preview). I have a Dell Precision 3660 workstation with Windows 22H2 Pro. As usual, Microsoft stinks!

Can anything be done about this? Also, I can’t get rid of (uninstall) Edge or widgets and some other Windows junk.

    • This is what made it work – running the “windows8.1-kb5022352-x64_d625561eda52f6d1f768dc444b817af0650ce81f.msu” file manually last night, then doing Update – Shutting Down, then this morning turning on the computer as normal procedure:

      I added “\Macromedia\Flash” folders to “c:\Windows\System32” and “c:\Windows\SysWOW64”.

      Thanks to all for suggestions.

    • in reply to: What is your Web presence? #2274302

I was amazed to read this:  “I maintain four websites and pay a total of just $6 per month for hosting — including SSL certificates!”

I find this a bit unbelievable. Can you explain how you do this? What host do you use? Is this one hosting account hosting 4 domains? Seems like that is the only possible way for it to be done. I can see how you might get an intro rate for 3 years, then change providers and do another 3 years at an intro rate. Thank you.

I think that anyone who trusts Microsoft with their files is a bit of a risk taker. Not for me.
