Should Microsoft ask for users consent to install Copilot ?

Not just Copilot, but everything that is non-essential to using the system e.g. Spotlight, newsfeeds etc

Fortunately, there will also be new settings to control Windows Spotlight (Settings | Personalization | Background | Personalize Your Background | Windows Spotlight) and the new Lock Screen widgets (Settings | Personalization | Lock Screen). See the 15-Mar-2024 ghacks.net article Next Windows 10 Update Brings Windows Spotlight, Lock Screen Content, and Another Windows 11 Upgrade Offer for more information.

Thanks. However, I suspect most people would prefer not to have this crap forced on them and then have to turn it off. Why not give us the choice about whether we want more bloat on our systems ?

As if the message that invites you to upgrade to Windows 11 is not bad enough, “This update adds Windows Spotlight to your desktop background. This feature displays new images as your desktop wallpaper. If you want to know more about an image, click or tap the Learn More button, which takes you to Bing.” and
“This update adds more content to your lock screen. In addition to weather, sports, traffic, and finance content will appear.”

      More crap from MS.

Haven’t tried it at all and probably never will.

    • So does anybody know what changes does WuMgr make to Windows when users select “Disable Automatic Updates”? Possibly a change to the registry and/or group policy file(s)? Surely it must make a change of some sort to system settings?

I’d like to know the answer to that question as well.

No. That looks like a solution to a non-existent problem. Nobody is putting any sensitive information on this site.

    • in reply to: Freeze Rows and Columns in Google Sheets #2636648

Cells A1 to K3 appear to be merged. As it says, unmerge them.

Then you should be able to freeze column 1.

If there really is no way to select only 4 rows to freeze (it sounds unlikely to me but I don’t use Google Sheets), you could probably add 4 more rows after row 3 making the old row 4 now row 8. Then hide those 4 new rows and select freeze “Up to row 8.”

Others here may have a more elegant solution.

    • in reply to: Do you need a password manager? #2634993

“check whether your email address and any passwords you use appear in databases of stolen credentials that are widely sold on the Internet. The easiest way to do this is to visit the password-checking page of a website named Have I Been Pwned”

The problem with checking your email address appears to be that if your email address shows up and you change your password as a result, your address will still always show up whether there has been a newer breach of your address or not. So after the first time you are none the wiser.

Configure DNS over HTTPS protection levels in Firefox ?
      https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/dns-over-https?as=u&utm_source=inproduct#

At the bottom of Privacy and Security preferences there are 4 options in “Enable secure DNS using:”
Mine is set to OFF (Use your default DNS resolver)
I see there is a “Default Protection” option but the explanation for what this does is pure gobbledygook to me. It mutters about secure DNS but wouldn’t I have that already? Why should I use (and trust) a secure DNS provider that Firefox decides is a good thing? Who are these guys ?

I’ve never had a problem using sleep on my PC. If I’m going out for an hour or so then I’ll use sleep mode. 3 hours or more and I’ll shut it down and turn off the modem/router.
