AskWoody PlusJust one more thing:
Q4’s cost of sales of 61% of revenue is in line with the 2023 full year, so if we assume that Q3’s 85% is to do with one-off restructuring charges then we can adjust the comparison further to get what I think is apples-to-apples:
Q3 is a loss of $0.2 billion and Q4 a gain of $0.5 billion.Windows 10 Home 22H2, Acer Aspire TC-1660 desktop + LibreOffice, non-techie

AskWoody PlusFor Q3, the loss was $16.6 billion. For Q4, the loss is $0.1 billion. That is obviously a dramatic improvement
This is a misleading comparison; Q3’s loss included $13.5 billion of tax provision and restructuring charges. A more valid comparison would be Operating income excluding restructuring charges. Q3 is then a loss of $3.4 billion and Q4 a gain of
$0.5 billion. Q3 also has cost of sales of 85% of revenue whereas Q4’s is 61% which looks odd to me without more detail. Other costs to do with the restructure in Q3’s COS?Bottom line: I don’t think comparing Q3 with Q4 is telling us very much at all and certainly doesn’t constitute a “dramatic” improvement. Possibly some improvement.

AskWoody Plus“Exclude folders” brings up a box where, I guess, I can enter paths to folders I want excluded, but it doesn’t seem to have a place to view what’s included in the first place.
Just a thought; do you need to turn FH on before it will show you the folders?

AskWoody PlusNovember 30, 2024 at 6:43 pm in reply to: Australia passes minimum age laws for social media #2721668you have to present some sort of age identification which will impact privacy.
The users of these platforms already have their privacy seriously impacted by all the data-slurping going on. Nothing is perfect and this law won’t be either, but we shouldn’t just surrender and let the perfect get in the way of the good.

AskWoody PlusOctober 2, 2024 at 5:06 pm in reply to: FCC Announces a $31.5 million settlement with T-Mobile #2707452And again, their net profit last year was 8 billion-something. Can we get our math whiz in here again to figure out how much of a breath mint that was for T-Stumble?
Total service revenues increased to $63.2 billion in 2023
Net income increased 221% year-over-year to $8.3 billion in 2023
Source: https://www.t-mobile.com/news/business/t-mobile-q4-2023-earningsSo a $31.5 million fine equates to 0.05% of their revenue and 0.38% of their net income. That’ll learn ’em !
Actually the real fine is only half that because “the telecom carrier must invest $15.75 million in cybersecurity enhancements”, expenditure they should have incurred anyway. You know something’s badly wrong when a court has to tell you how much you need to spend in cybersecurity enhancements.

AskWoody PlusSeptember 30, 2024 at 2:55 pm in reply to: Irish Data Protection Commission fines Meta Ireland €91 million #2707041Let’s get the numbers right:
91 million euros is about 101 million USD
Meta’s revenue and net income for the year ended Dec 31 2023 was 134.9 billion and 39.1 billion respectively. See https://investor.fb.com/financials/
So 91 million euros is 0.07% of their revenue and 0.26% of their net income.
This doesn’t change the OP’s conclusion. Chickenfeed.

AskWoody PlusInteresting. Could it be connected to the fact that there are zero charge/discharge cycles ? In other words, the battery needs to discharge sometimes to stay healthy ? I seem to remember reading somewhere that that is the case.
