Thanks Bob. I have gone round in circles with HP to try to solve the installation of their new HP Update. It says ‘installed successfully’ but when I check what is in programmes its the old one still! And if I use the installed HP Update to check what updates I should install it tells me to install what it said had been ‘successfully installed’!
Both HP Health Check and HP Update programmes have been a source of grief so I think your policy is the best … do it yourself!

With so many HP notebooks in world markets I am a bit surprised that we have not had more comments through Woody’s’ on this subject … but maybe I am the only one with this difficulty.
I would add that the person at HP whom I have been dealing with is very helpful and is still trying to help me work out ‘what goes wrong’. I might try your HP On-Line idea but it would have to be English speaking.

Thanks for your advice alle sammen.

Yep, I was trying to remove the remover in Control Panel and not run it. I assumed that was the thing to do to delete the total software of ABC Now … now I know better!

Well Hans I did download Silverlight but Adobe Flash seems to be the only one ‘selected’ when I go to ‘flash’ pages. How do I change this to ‘MS Silverlight?

      Regards

    • in reply to: Quicktime vs WMP #1103100

I have QT also but where possible use WMP. Apple let me download QT without iTunes (didn’t want iTunes) a while back but now every update that comes up on my screen after the auto check seems to require the download of both programmes!
Anyone know how to get out of this?
      I use Vista HP

    • in reply to: Public or Private network #1100168

Thanks Dave. I thought that was the case but the MS Vista Help says …
‘If there’s only one computer on your network and you know you won’t need to share files or printers, the safest choice is “Public place.’
Maybe a lot of my problems have been due to a ‘very tight firewall’ so best I try it on ‘Private’ to see what happens. I assume this will not make it ‘open for all’ at home? Can I revert easily to Public if I decide this is OK for me … I guess that choosing is very flexible, either way?
The download problem seems to be solved in that when I am asked ‘Do I trust this site etc’ I simply click ‘yes’ (if I know it!) and can then download/save or download/install. Some of the programmes will not run easily (WMP at full screen was an example) but I found a page on the Windows Firewall that lets me permit various programmes to run correctly.

    • in reply to: Driver Update (Home Premium) #1098740

Thanks Dave … a useful site.
Do you have an answer to my above request:
‘should I uninstall the presently installed driver before I attempt to install the latest driver? And if the update fails will the pc automatically install a driver (even an older version) so that I retain the audio facility? And do I have to do anything with BIOS … whatever this is!’

    • in reply to: Driver Update (Home Premium) #1098659

      Hei
The driver that I am trying to update is the audio from Realtek. My first attempt failed and the pc reloaded a driver that was older than the one that I started with! This is unfamiliar territory to me as I’m no tech expert so I have been in contact with HP who are trying to help me solve.
Maybe you know the answer to this question:
Should I uninstall the presently installed driver before I attempt to install the latest driver? And if the update fails will the pc automatically install a driver (even an older version) so that I retain the audio facility? And do I have to do anything with BIOS … whatever this is!

HP does have a programme in my pc that does check for updates but they have confirmed that not all the various kinds of updates are checked and advised. So the update that I am seeking is one that’s ‘off the ‘normal’ HP list of automatic updating.

Thanks Dave. Had a look at the HP list for my model (Pavilion dv6525ea) and it seems that may be a track to follow down. However the list does not say which ones I should update (eg which ones do I have presently installed) so how do I sort this out?
Is it common practice for pc vendors to not fully inform about ‘updates’? Maybe they only inform about ‘important/critical’ ones and leave the rest up to us to sort out … if we know what we are doing!

      Thanks for your reply Joe.
Had a look at HP Update and again nothing to download. Guess that I will have to ‘leave it for a while’ and see what happens … unless other HP users have some offerings?

    • in reply to: WMP 11 Video Display size #1096466

      Thanks guys for your guidence.
I have checked again all that you both have kindly suggested, checked my driver is current version and the updates for WMP and all seems to be OK. My WMP version is 11.0.6000.6344 so I am really baffled as to what can be the problem. Is, for example, there a ‘Restore all Defaults’ for WMP just in case something has been wrongly clicked in the past … can’t seem to find it??
Also I find on further checking that if I go to the 7.30 Report web page that I previously listed as an example, click on the ‘Subscribe to our Vodcast’, click onto say ‘Recent Items … Corruption inquiry recommends criminal charges [mp4] [wmv] (07/02/2008) ‘ and click the wmv option, then I can play the vodcast at full screen!

How much harder can it get! Help!

      http://www.abc.net.au/7.30/
is one of the links … it is ABC Australia and they do not have adverts. Click on ‘Watch Programme (Windows Media)’
Thanks for taking ‘time out’ to assist.

    • in reply to: WMP 11 Video Display size #1096277

      1. (What happens if you pause/start?)
No improvement, still a blank screen
      2. (Try one of these WMP keyboard shortcuts)
      As above
3.( I have come across the display (picture) blanking out before – I think it was if the WMP window was moved.)
If I try to enlarge the WMP screen by using the corner then the video goes blank eg any oversizing causes it to blank.

Hope that you can think of more options! Don’t these things annoy … spend more time ‘sorting out’ than ‘using’ nowadays!
