I’m going to wait it out till MS does whatever they need to do to allow this update to install in the “normal” fashion. That’s what they get paid for.

For a desert island question it’s hands down no doubt my Ipad Pro.

    • in reply to: Do you touch your screen? #2559130

No I do not touch my windows desktop screen. You are supposed to keep a desktop monitor at arm’s length, so it’s not really convenient to touch the screen. I always thought that desktop makers started making touchscreens so that they would have one more line of advertising copy, that might impress some potential customer. And to make us think they were keeping up with the smartphone and tablet world. Matte screens are so yesterday you know.

Touchscreens can’t be matte, so they bring the glare problems with their gloss surfaces. There are films you can apply to cut the glare, but they also cut the image quality.

At least Apple has kept touchscreens out of the Mac line (so far), but they use gloss screens anyway, and have glare problems in some environments.

Using the instructions for removing the  temp files manually, I was able to remove the  temp files. But the others remained , especially the 2.28GB windows update cleanup files, which are the primary ones I wanted to clean up.

Could this have something to do with the windows updates I installed last month? Could the non-functioning disk cleanup be due to an error in the windows update?

It opens and runs, goes through the progress bars, but no files are ever deleted. Rinse, repeat accomplishes nothing. Also does not delete file groups that I  select individually. Worked OK till a couple of weeks ago.

    • All Macs are AIO so it must be a good idea, right? 🙂

AIOs can’t be upgraded easily and bc of the tight packaging of components and heat  don’t use the top performing hardware. I have computer intense friends who scoff at them for those reasons. Also one will hear people say that the AIO runs hotter and will break down sooner. We haven’t experienced this and you know it’s not like tower computers last forever either.

In our house, where we are not power users and don’t make modifications, we like that the AIO eliminates most  cabling and can be easily moved if you need to. The built in speakers are usually good enough for geberal audio and if you want better then you can hook up  some speakers. Good chance that if your friend tries one she will like these advantages and not go back to a tower. IMO AIO also better than any laptop bc you can use it with a nice keyboard, and get a bigger screen.

Personally I find AIOs with touchscreens ridiculous, since I don’t want to reach out to a screen I am supposed to keep at arm’s length. Also nowadays it may not be easy to find an AIO with matte finish monitor, which I prefer to keep down glare.

My next AIO will be a Mac bc I am fed up with Windows. Maybe your friend could consider Mac if she can afford and is willing to adapt a bit.

Guess I am a Norton loyalist. My computer mentors recommended it to me way back when I got my first machine, and I have never had a need to change to another AV.

I  got spoiled for years buying it for free after rebate at Fry’s. The golden days of free after rebate :). The rebates stopped after the “great recession” as I recall, to make a long story short now I use sales on Amazon and Newegg and it still looks like a good value to me for covering windows, ios, chrome from one license. A day or two before my license expires, the program will ask me for a new key, which I enter and just go on from there. Using this method, I’ve never been asked for a CC number that I can recall.

I think Norton and other AVs took a big sales hit from Microsoft Defender, just because Defender costs nothing. Defender IMO was not a good performer for many years, maybe it is OK now. However I still don’t want to depend on it because of Microsoft’s habit of redefining their business model without warning, and then some product of theirs suddenly becomes expensive, decontented, or just disappears.

I feared for Norton’s future after they were split from Symantec, but they survived. Then they hooked up with lifelock, not too long after lifelock got done paying off a big fine to the govt for fraudulent sales practices, as I recall. Norton seems to be surviving now too, but in my opinion, Lifelock is malarkey.

    • in reply to: Driver Updates 20H2 #2369036

I’d like some discussion of this question also.

My computer mentors told me way back that re drivers, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.  IOW if you have a specific problem and are sure that an updated driver will address it, go ahead and install the new driver. Otherwise, do nothing.

You may try to install an unneeded driver, and it will just not install, and reappear on the list of updated drivers, no harm done. Or, the new driver will install and cause the service to stop working, and you’ll have to uninstall the new driver, and hope that you can find the old driver on a website somewhere, and reinstall it.

I have stopped installing any and all “optional” updates. I have a list of driver updates similar to yours on 3 Windows 10 machines, and the lists are on the “optional” page, so I leave them be.

Looks to me like a marketing-driven gimmick intended to reel in new customers by splashing the C-word all over the package.

Adds no value to the product for me. I’d like them to spend their dev money on security features instead.

Not to forget: just because a software maker includes a “new feature,” doesn’t mean that it works as promised or expected.

If you live near, I’d suggest going to an independent office supply (not ODepot) and trying out what they have.

Mesh back and multi adjust were a must for me, and I knew this brand from what my employer buys, quality is good for the price IMO, 5+ years no issues: https://www.costco.com/hon-vl700-series-black-mesh-swiveltilt-mid-back-chair.product.11612532.html

business analysis of Frys ascent, decline, fall. Went from “a fun place that sold everything, to a depressing place that sold almost nothing”.

And don’t forget the “as seen on TV” aisle :).

    • in reply to: Frys electronics is closing #2347416

Frys “maybe” could have survived if they had set up a working online order system from a user-friendly website. Maybe the business model could have been retooled to deal with modern times. Or maybe there is a bankruptcy option that could have kept them going. But the family owners chose not to.

They are a different store in many ways, but I look at how B&H Photo is surviving, with an anchor of one b/m store, and I wonder if Frys could not have done something similar.

They had a unique product mix. Maybe that hurt them: too much floor space given to slow moving merchandise.

I don’t really like Bezos, but there is no denying that he took a concept and makes it work.

Microcenter? But they have fewer stores than Frys did, and I don’t want to make a day trip to get computer and electronics shopping done. Also the MC website needs modernization, and it will be telling whether or not they put the money into doing that.

Amazon beat the others at their own game and sets the standard nowadays. Seems Bezos and his team are able to give the customers what they want, there’s nothing wrong with that. They make it really easy to spend your money and get your merch. Amazon’s the one to beat, who can do it?

Best Buy? Give me a break, poor selection, clueless staff, poor inventory control.

Wholesale clubs? Did I read somewhere that Costco is the largest computer retailer in the US?
