For what it’s worth (and this info. goes back 25 years so probably not much) a large computer manufacturer once showed me their stats. on maintenance call-outs.

By far the busiest day of the year was Easter Tuesday because more companies shut down their computer systems over Easter weekend than during any other holiday period. December 27th was also very busy indeed. The cause? Mostly fans not restarting after being shut down for a couple of days, also some problems with power surges at power-on.

Consequently I got into the habit of keeping everything powered on and frequently vacuum the dust out of my desktop’s fans. I’ve never had a power-on failure and the only time I’ve ever had a heat failure was when my router fried.

I, too, am a UK user of Quicken 2004. I’ve tried some other applications but none come close to Quicken.

I’ve been using it since 1997 when I also used it for my business and have never had a problem reinstalling after a Windows upgrade. Currently it’s running perfectly in Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and is the very first application I test after an upgrade. There’s a second copy on my laptop and an automatic sync of the data files between desktop and laptop.

I shudder to think what’ll happen if it ever fails on me as I use almost all of it’s facilities including Forecasting, Inventory and downloads from my bank.

I don’t recollect having to download any dlls for Win7 (all 3 are in my Quicken dir, dated 8/12/2004) but will keep a note of serifall’s instructions in case they’re needed for win8.

I wonder how many in the UK are still using Quicken?

Re: IE9 Browser commands & functions.

Strangely, on my desktop PC F12 does nothing at all.

Also, copy/paste “iexplore -k http://www.windowssecrets.com” into the “Search programs and files” box opens another tab in the current IE9 with “Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage”

On my laptop, F12 also does nothing, while the command opens a new instance of IE9 containing “No items match your search”

Have I got some wrong/unusual settings somewhere? If so, which?
      [both systems are: Win7 HP,SP1 64-bit. IE9.0.8112 32-bit]

… it sure seems as though it is a PayPal specific problem.

FYI, PayPal’s response (having told them the driver is the latest available): “I would ask that you make sure you have the latest drivers for your printer and
your system as we are unable to offer technical help of this type.”

Looks like I’ll just have to stop printing labels via PayPal.

Have you tried contacting PayPal support?

      Joe

All PayPal’s support options address business problems, I couldn’t find anything like Technical Support but I have sent an eMail with a request to forward it to the relevant department… so I’m not holding my breath for that response!

      Thank you both.

I’ll revert to 32-bit IE9 until 64-bit can be set as the default browser, and also because I’ve noticed that when I leave 64-bit IE9 running for maybe a couple of hours such as when I have lunch, I see it has increased its memory usage to nearly 2GB and is greatly slowing down my 4GB system!

you could install “takeownership” that makes it easy to gain ownership just from the right click menu.

Have added the file to attachments.

Thanks, curiousclive, I’ve installed this and will use it when I need it.

      Keith,
Hello…If i look at Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Devices and Printers> and double click on my printer and then “Security Tab”… Only “Administrators” have “Full Control” as i have set, can print..The “Owner” doesn’t… Check and see if you can print …Might need to re-arrange the Owner Administrator thing. Regards Fred

Just after starting this thread I found the Bluebrad site http://www.bluebrad.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=225:fix-printing-problems-by-resetting-the-print-spooler&catid=85:computer-tech&Itemid=68 and clicked “Microsoft Fix it” on this page to run the wizard (with reset option turned off).

I don’t know what action it took but it worked on my desktop, which is now printing just fine, but when I ran the same wizard on my laptop (same OS and basic set-up) it failed with the message “This Microsoft Fix it does not apply to your operating system or application version”.

That was last night (~15hr ago). I have just opened up the laptop to check something for this thread… and that’s working too!

Just to clear up this Ownership business:
On the Desktop, spoolsv.exe is Owned by TrustedInstaller, and the printer is Owned by SYSTEM.
On the Laptop, spoolsv.exe is Owned by TrustedInstaller but I can’t establish ownership as there is no Security tab available.

I think I should close this thread now as I am able to print again.
Thank you all for your help in this matter.

      k64,
      Hello…. I have a few ideas ,

      1. Check… Administrative Tools>System Configuration>Services> Print Spooler… and make sure that it’s checked off

      2. Check…Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Services and Applications> Services>Print Spooler.

      3. If it’s an “Ownership matter” post back and i will help you become the new “Owner” Regards Fred

      1. and 2. check out correctly
      3. The owner (i.e. Full Control) is TrustedInstaller, which I take to be correct as it’s the same on a PC that’s OK.

    • in reply to: Print Spooler stops after a few seconds #1322953

The printer is attached to the router (wired).

Files in the Spooler folder have been deleted.

The uninstaller aborts when it discovers the spooler is not running!

    • in reply to: Is there a Quicken substitute? #1218789

(Just caught up with this thread.) I’ve been a user of Quicken since ’98 when I bought it for both personal and business use. I, too, encountered the problems with VAT but my accountant discovered the errors (over £400) before the VAT man did, saving my honour.

Since 2004 I’ve only needed Quicken for personal use, which is just as well as that’s when Intuit ceased support in the UK. Quicken XG (2004) still serves me well and there’ve been no problems when upgrading Windows through XP Pro and 32-bit Vista Home Premium to 64-bit 7 Home Premium.

The essential parts of Quicken for me are:
1/ the ability to download and update my bank accounts
2/ the excellent Calendar function which I use to show me when I need to shift money into my current account to cover an upcoming large bill
3/ the very flexible and endlessly customisable Reports

I was very worried a couple of years ago when my current account information stopped downloading from my bank and I thought I may have to find an alternative application. However, my bank found and solved the problem (which occurred because my account number had a leading zero). The best thing about Quicken support in the UK was that it officially ceased to exist; after then you couldn’t kid yourself that someone in Intuit would care about your plight.

If I find alternative software that fulfils my three essentials and that can input my existing Quicken data, then I’ll certainly try it. Until then: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it

      Thanks, Paul.

What can I do to pinpoint when it occurs and maybe identify the corrupted file, bad registry key or virus?

I’m running Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2 (build 6002)
