    • in reply to: There’s something about trains #2318993

Trains certainly are superior, particularly in the UK.

Next summer, when Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted, I’m going to do a circular tour of mainland UK, hugging the coast as much as possible and not going through the same station twice.  Additionally I’ll visit the northernmost, southernmost, easternmost and westernmost stations.  Travelling from 10am to 6pm-ish (this is not a race) it’ll take me 14 days and 55 trains.

That’s what I call seeing the country.

    • in reply to: How many items can be pinned to taskbar icons? #2264307

Ah!  I’ve just discovered that the list of pinned files scrolls.  There are six items in my list, not two!

      However:

1/  Can the scrolling be stopped, i.e. just get the full list?

2/ Is there a maximum that can be pinned, and how to increase it?

      Thanks

      Keith

I’m still using Quicken 2004.  Tried many others, none of them can match it even in it’s out-of-date state.

    • in reply to: Windows Defender stopped scanning automatically #1590571

If CCleaner, then [SOLVED] Windows Defender needs to scan your computer (#11)

Yes, I do have CCleaner and, thanks to your reply, I’ve unchecked Windows Defender in CCleaner and the “WD needs to scan” messages have stopped.

However, I also looked at the WD entry in Task Scheduler and there was no trigger for running WD so I set one up for 01:00 every day. The rather confusing situation now is that when I open WD, at the foot of the Home tab under Scan Details it shows last scan 06/02/2017 at 22:03 but in Task Scheduler the WD Scheduled Scan entry lists last scan at 07/02/2017 01:00 and the other three WD entries (Cache Maintenance, Cleanup, Verification) all show 06/02/2017 at 22:03.

Is everything running as it should?

Thanks, JoeP517, I’ve set it up and we’ll see what happens later tonight.

      Real-Time Protection turned ON.

Thanks for that advice, RockE, I’ll certainly consider that if the problem reappears but, happily, it has completely disappeared since the moment I started this thread!

I have, however, created another restart point.

N.B. The two .Net packages I mentioned have been successfully updated 12 out of 18 days this month (exact same versions).

    • in reply to: How do I revert to logging on with a Local Account? #1569073

      Thanks.

I went ahead with “Settings/Accounts/Sign in with a local account instead” and chose a new log-on name and then the process just took a few moments, plus logging-on again with my new name and password.

My fear of C:Usersoldname… being changed to C:Usersnewname was completely unfounded, C:Usersoldname still exists as before.

    • in reply to: Keying text very very sluggish, pop-up windows/menus blank #1548645

Yes, System restore is turned on and I could go back to the 14th but the system has been perfectly OK since the last Restore (on 23rd just before starting this thread) so I’ll wait until the problem returns.

I’ve run SFC /SCANNOW and “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations”.

I have this problem plus one or two others so have started another thread: “Keying text very very sluggish, pop-up windows/menus blank”

    • in reply to: Desktop Window Manager causes crash during start/restart #1466465

I didn’t know Reliability Monitor was available in Vista. Thanks for that.

After rolling back the display driver I spent a few minutes in RelMon looking for driver updates. Last February 2nd there were ten driver install failures for USBVID_OFCE&PID_5156&MI_016&9D1C54&0&0001 and another two on Feb 16th and one on Feb 26th. The stability chart plunged on March 18 when there were updates for Windows Defender and Firefox, Malicious Software Removal Tool was installed and there were four disruptive shutdowns.

      Thankfully all is fine now.

Thanks, Jerry, it was the display driver.
Roll Back Driver took it back to Standard VGA Graphics Adapter (it was SiS Mirage 3 Graphics Properties) and it is now working beautifully with Normal Boot.

Thanks, Joe, it was the driver (see later post)

I haven’t, but I don’t know what my neighbour or the previous owner have done.

Is there an easy way to check?

      Thanks, Joe.
I’m not familiar with the themes but I went to Control Panel>Personalization>Window Color and Appearance. Then I Set Color scheme to Windows Vista Basic, went to Effects… and unchecked all 3 boxes. (I trust this is what you intended)
I set the Boot back to Normal, but it still failed on the Welcome screen.
