I have used a free application known as MailStore Home for several years to archive my email from various clients. I have an archive of email I’ve chosen to keep which dates back to the late nineties. It will allow you to archive your Thunderbird, Outlook, etc. email and import those same archives.
It is for personal non-commercial use. Just search the ‘net for “MailStore Home” for details.

Yes, I think we should try to preserve all knowledge. We probably shouldn’t have to invent the wheel but once.
I have a friend who paid a fellow to design and post a web site for him. He prepaid for several years of hosting including his email. Years passed and he had forgotten that his hosting contract would eventually expire.
One evening he phoned me with a sad story. He had just spent all day trying to find out why his web site had disappeared suddenly!
The original web site designer who owned his own company had sold it and retired.
My friend had managed to ignore a great number of email warnings regarding his hosting account with the result that the new hosting company pulled the plug!

Since I had never seen my friend’s web site I used the Internet archive, also known as the WayBackMachine, to create a web site for my friend with all the functionality of his old site.
I suggested that he donate money to the Internet archive because indirectly they saved his bacon.

We may need to know just a bit more about your system.
Have you restarted your computer since you noticed this condition?
What version of Windows are you running (and what build number)?
If you right-click one of those folders which don’t open, and then choose “properties” from the resulting menu, what is the description?

UPDATE: TeraByte Drive Image Backup and Restore Suite version 3.45 is available for download (since Friday, June 18, 2021).
I’m downloading it now (Saturday) and will install it this morning, then use it to image my computers. I’ll report if I encounter any problems.

    • in reply to: Hard Drive Connection #2362719

You did not indicate what type of hard drive interface your motherboard has.
If someone said “a few years” to me in reference to a “hard drive” I would probably think they were speaking of USB or newer hard drives.
If someone said “many years” to me in reference to a “hard drive” I would probably think they were speaking of SATA or ESATA hard drives.
If someone said “many, many years” to me in reference to a “conventional hard drive” I would probably think they were speaking of IDE or EIDE hard drives.
Unless a motherboard has “hot swap” capability as part of its design, I would probably not experiment with connecting or disconnecting a “conventional” hard drive while the system is powered on.
On the other hand, if I did experiment, I would connect power first and then the data cable. When disconnecting manually I would first disconnect the data cable and then disconnect the power cable.

Hi, Brian. I looked just now but could not find my first copy of Windows Secrets, however I did find my copy of Windows 95 Secrets – I’d forgotten where I had put it! Nowadays I’m feeling as worn and dog-eared as it is.
I’ll be happy to see your appearance in print here at AskWoody and I hope to learn even more from you in the future.

    • in reply to: Downsize from 1TB HDD to 500GB SSD #2324647

Congratulations on being such a good neighbor, bbearren!

Since SSD costs are so relatively low nowadays I have done similar replacements for friends and neighbors several times over the last couple of years. In many cases switching from a hard drive to an SSD is enough to make an old system seem much more responsive (enough to mean the difference between discarding an old system or keeping it).
Upgrading to an SSD, and adding more memory, are the two most beneficial upgrades I’ve made to older systems (or at least, the most bang for the buck).

I used to use Ghost in a previous century to accomplish that kind of thing (although it required additional software and lots more steps involved as I recall). I imaged and restored often (but I didn’t use SSDs back then).

Today I often suggest that people simply use a free imaging program (like Macrium Reflect, AOMEI, etc.) but I have never regretted buying a license for Image for Windows. It just plain works and it has been updated for free many times since I first bought a copy.

WDC indicates Western Digital Corporation models. What evidence (other than standard warnings from potentially dangerous software) do you have which leads you to believe your two programs “think’ your hard drives are SSD instead of hard drives?
They are hard drives as your posting indicates. What exactly makes you think your two programs are confused?

    • in reply to: Understanding instructions #2313218

      Timing is everything.
A CPU has Fetch and Execute parts to its machine cycle(s).
The “word” (binary digits) brought into the CPU during its Fetch cycle is interpreted as an instruction but if the same word is brought into the CPU during its execute cycle then those same bits are used as data instead. (The data may be an addend, subtrahend, divisor, etc.)
What happens depends largely on the timing of the CPU’s Fetch and Execute cycles. Everything that happens essentially depends on the CPU’s clock.
