    • in reply to: Airpods Pro 2 Firmware Update #2723784

I finally got the firmware to update. I contacted Apple support for an assist before I headed to an Apple store, which is some distance from my home. The first attempt was what I’ve been trying and what PKCano suggested, with one small step added. They recommended that I use them for 30 seconds or more before inserting them into the case for the update. This didn’t work either. Ultimately I had to hard reset them and re-pair them to my phone. Then I followed the steps that I had been doing and the update came through.

Obviously, this isn’t iDevice related, but I’ve been considering these hearing aids: https://audienhearing.com/  They are over the counter and far less expensive than prescription. They’re running Christmas deals now and you can save $100 or so depending on the model.

Yes. I’ve made several attempts, each time meeting those requirements.

Thanks. I’ll give that a try. I left them connected all night over the weekend and still no joy.

Yes, that’s what I did. Perhaps I was too impatient? I only left it for an hour or so. I’ll try an overnight next.

Yup, those are the articles that I found as well. I was hoping that someone discovered something that I haven’t yet. Thanks for the reply!

Check out the DEFCON alert that Susan linked to in her original post. Specifically, the information about new Outlook is under the Businesses heading in that article.

    • in reply to: Apple AirPods Pro 2 as Hearing Aids #2720682

Thank you for the thorough review! I have moderate to severe tinnitus, and the doc told me that hearing aids could help. I don’t understand how amplifying sound overall can resolve the phantom noise that I hear. When I saw Will’s article I thought I’d give it a try to see if this feature helps at all before I invest thousands for hearing aids. I came here to post about a problem I’m having (the firmware version on my Air Pods is a few versions old, and I can’t seem to force an update) and found your post. Thanks again!

Thank you for the heads up regarding the forced new Outlook change coming down the line. I just tried (again) switching to new Outlook and had to switch back. I called it quits after 3 show stoppers:

      • Not able to add shared mailboxes to Favorites section
      • Not able to disable opening messages with a single click
      • Not able to change/customize mailbox headers (From, Subject, Received, etc.)
        • I have a custom header in place in our organization that displays the domain of the sender. I’ve trained my users to take note of that domain before opening a message. It’s a small, simple step in the interest of security.

I’m hoping you include additional information about this when MS is close to forcing it upon us, including how to block it with group policy. Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving!

I use a program called PhraseExpress to accomplish exactly what you are wanting to do, enter your email address with a combination of key presses. I use Ctrl + ~   I log into many different systems in a day and have found PhraseExpress to be a real finger saver 🙂

    • It may be a little over the top, but have you considered Windows Sandbox? If she fires that up, then proceeds to Edge for browsing, her browsing activities would be segregated from the rest of her PC. This approach has some obvious drawbacks, such as the ability to save and navigate to bookmarks. That could be overcome by signing into a Microsoft account and syncing Edge. A bit cumbersome and time consuming I know, but something to consider.

    • in reply to: So how’s your battery? #2705694

We have 2 HP ProBook laptops in the fleet with the same battery-related issue. When they are powered off and external monitors are left connected to them, they rapidly lose charge, at a rate of 10-20% per night. The monitors themselves are powered off too. For some reason it’s like the HDMI and USB-C connections bleed the charge off.

“Third-party antivirus software will probably not work. That’s OK — because all anyone needs is Defender, provided with all Windows editions.”

I had no idea that you’re now dabbling in standup comedy Peter 😁

    • Thank you, Brian, for dedicating time and space in the newsletter and on the forum to this topic! Parents, grandparents, everyone with custody of children, needs to be armed with information like this. As a credentialed minster, I have brought similar information to my congregations about the potential perils of social media to children. It reinforces what I’m teaching when reputable news sources like Ask Woody echo what I am saying from the pulpit.

    • in reply to: Mouse quest #2662481

Hey Will- I have a Microsoft mouse, P/N X800898 connected to a KVM in my server room that gets very little use (I remote into my servers and seldom physically stand at the terminal). It makes no difference to me which mouse I use there. If this mouse is close enough to the one you’re familiar with, I’d be happy to send it your way gratis. Just message me an address to send it to.
