I’m not convinced that this is a solution.

No I agree its not something I would want to do.  Anyway, for now I have given up on 24H2 and restored 23h2 which just works better in every respect even eject :-).

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions but I will stay with it for now until I am forced to ‘upgrade’ .  Heres hoping MS will clear up some of the bugs and make it properly useable by then.

Sorry to reply to my own post, but it appears that the answer is to reformat the external drives to xFAT but one would have to copy the data to a different place then copy back once the format was complete – what a pain that would be.

Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties

I use several external drives for disk image and data backups.  The properties of the drives are the same in both versions. This issue was not as pronounced in 23h2 or windows 10 with only occasional disk in use messages, which were easily solved by clicking on a different drive thus allowing the ejection.

Yes even doing that still does not allow ejecting.  I have also had odd instances in windows 10, and fixed it using ‘your’ method. As I said restoring a 23h2 disk image solved the issue.

    • Yes I realise that, but I like to make disk images as I have found that just rolling back sometimes does not restore the previous version exactly.

    • I left my pc on overnight and came back the following morning to find it wanting a restart.  after restarting it had installed 24h2!  However it seems tobe working normally – even see more was working correctly – very strange.  I will try it for a while before deciding whether to restore my previous disk image to 23h2 or windows 10

The MS Account entry in users will be something like abcbr which will be the first letters of the microsoft user name you put in when first installing windows. This is the one to delete in safe mode when you have done the other steps.

Also go to settings/accounts and you will see your current account and it will show if local account administrator.

After doing msconfig/safe mode, to get rid of the folder entry in users I opened This PC  and selected the c drive/ users – right clicked and delete to remove the now empty MS folder.

There does not seem to be any trace of the MS account.  The profile in advanced system settings shows default and computername\Me entries.

    • in reply to: Disabling Copilot–is it possible? #2710561

Co pilot suddenly appeared on my PC also. I went to apps and saw it appeared there so uninstalled it, along with Cortana which I also noticed. So far neither have reappeared. Hope this helps

    • The incompatability issue in win 11 was the straw that broke the camels back for me with Acronis. It had become slow, bloated and then a subscription model.  I deleted it and bought a 4 seat version of Macrium, which is just a backup program and works very well.

Yes. Done that, prior to testing patch Tuesdays foul ups. 🙂

The more recent images had the same issue for some reason which I could not discover.  I tried clean boots, deleting the icon cache etc., to no avail.  Its a mystery – I dont like unfixable mysteries  on computers.

I have now solved the issue.  I found a disk image from April and restored that, spent a couple of hours bringing it upto date and all is now well 🙂

It was surprising how much needed to be updated, but it got rid of a lot of dross in the process.

Thanks. I’ll try that and see if it solves the issue.:-)

    • in reply to: Issue with KB5001716 #2646747

Yes. The problem seems to have been resolved, KB5001716  installed OK on 2 windows 10 PCs this evening.  There are now 2 instances showing in update history. Now if only MS would also fix 5034441 and the photo app.
