AskWoody PlusHello Susan, A question regarding the Master patch list for Windows 11 22h2. The master patch list shows:
Version 22H2 5027303 6/27/2023 Defer Install IF you have 22H2 Cumulative update Preview patch – do not install
This entry shows defer install but if you have 22h2 then install then it states Preview patch Do not install. It is a bit confusing as to what one should do. The write up states: “Co> preview releases and will make it into the July patch releases.” So should I install the preview or wait for the July releases? Thanks very much for providing the information and expertise.

AskWoody PlusJust got the kb5026446 on computer after being gone. I noticed that it is not listed on the Master Patch list. Does Susan have any comments about this KB? Thanks very much.

AskWoody PlusThank you very much for the clarification of what is recommended or not recommended. I am able to order the PC and laptop with windows 10 so it looks like Windows 10. Just have to verify that they would be version of 22H2 or 21H2. Thanks again.

AskWoody PlusSusan Bradley,
Do you have any comments about whether a new PC and laptop should be windows 10 or windows 11? Thank you very much for your work on this forum and website. It is greatly appreciated.

AskWoody PlusThis may be slightly off the topic but I am looking to move to a new PC and laptop which give me the option of specifying Windows 10 Pro or Windows 11 Pro. Unfortunately, no version identification is given for either the Win 11 or Win 10. Given the issues with the Win 11 mentioned in this article, should I pursue getting a Win 10 version and then move to Win 11 when Win 11 is more “grownup”? Thanks for your help on this issue.

AskWoody PlusSeptember 11, 2022 at 3:41 pm in reply to: It’s that time to download a copy of Windows 10 media #2476995I installed KB3140245 on 4/22/2016– a few days after it was released. Prior to typing this answer, I went to the Easy Fix and followed : “To add the DefaultSecureProtocols registry subkey automatically, click here” I clicked and followed the prompts to complete the install. Hopefully this will change the registry to what I need to use get the Windows 10 media download. I already have the Media Creation tool 21H2 on the computer from my previous attempts to do this download.
It appears win 10 is currently downloading after I did the automatic DefaultSecurityProtocols download. Win 10 completed download with a size ~ 4.29GB. I’ll also back this up to other USB drives so I will have backup.
Thanks for the information on how to resolve the issue.

AskWoody PlusSeptember 11, 2022 at 1:20 pm in reply to: It’s that time to download a copy of Windows 10 media #2476966Hi Susan, I have win 7 professional which is on ESU. When I go to the website that you referenced in your article about time to download Win 10 media, I follow the directions but keep getting the following error “We’re not sure what happened, but we’re unable to run this tool on you PC If you continue experiencing problems, reference the error code when contacting customer support. Error code 0x80072F8F – 0x20000.” The download program stops at this point. I do not know why this is occurring but thought I would mention it in case someone else runs into this. Have you run into this?

AskWoody PlusHi, I have office 2010 with ESU and Office 2019 home and business to install in the near future–at computer hardware upgrade. I wonder why Office 2019 does not appear not to be shown on the Master patch list? Or did I miss something? Would if be better to go to Office 2021 than install Office 2019? I am not into the subscription version of Office. Thanks very much for your help.

AskWoody PlusHi Susan, Thank you to you and all the others that help the rest of us patch our computers. With respect to the Master Patch list for March for Office 2010, the Master patch list shows #5010324 for Exchange server 2013CU23, #5012698 for Exchange Server 2016 CU21 and CU22 and #501269 for Echange Server 2019 CU10 and CU11. Are these patches supposed to be under the appropriate listing ,2013,2016, 2019 Exchange servers and not under Office 2010? I have Office Professional Plus 2010 and it does not use any of the above that I am aware. Or Iam mistaken? Thank you for reviewing this and letting me know.

RE: Master patch list updated 21-08-25: What is the installation status for the following update KB5004871–2021-08 Security and Quality Rollup for .NET Framework 3.5.1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2, 4.7, 4.7.1, 4.7.2, 4.8 for Windows 7 for x64? It doesn’t seem to appear to be on the Master Patch list. Should I install this separately from the other update, Kb5005088, Monthly Security quality update, that I received for the August updates? Thank you very much for giving us the help and guidance with the updates. It is appreciated.
I appreciate your response. Still would like to know if the NET KB5004871 needs to be installed by itself. Thank you.

AskWoody PlusHi Susan, I updated my desktop PC (Win7 Pro) with KB5003667 Monthly rollup and KB890830 malicious software removal tool. Per your advice, I deferred KB500379 Net update. Desktop PC went fine. I tried to install the same KB (KB5003667 and KB890830) on my win 7 HP laptop. It installed the kb890830 but failed four times to install the KB5003667. I decided to check the ESU on the laptop. The result was the ESU (2nd yr) was installed correctly so I decided to try the install again after checking the ESU. When I went to windows Update to try to install KB5003667 again, the Windows update showed that “Windows is up to date” As I am typing this Windows now shows updates are available via a popup. The update is the one that disappeared a few minutes ago. I even tried a standalone install of KB5003667 but it appears to hang up on “searching for updates on computer” and does not go anywhere. I shut down the laptop and restarted. Now windows update states “Windows is up to Date” again. I wonder what is going on?

AskWoody PlusSusan: I am running win 7 pro. I have KB5001878 on the patch list. When I check the master patch list for this update, the master patch list shows ” Defer” “NET no new security fixes” However when looking at the referenced KB 5001878, it refers to KB4578952, KB4578955, KB5001848 and KB5001843. KB 5001848 and Kb 5001843 from their information (summary) are “Quality Improvements” while KB4578952 and KB4578955 from their information (Summary) are “Security Improvements”. If the master patch list shows NET no new security fixes, the KB 4578952 and KB4578955 must not include any new security fixes but their Summary states “An information disclosure vulnerability exists when the .NET Framework improperly handles objects in memory. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could disclose contents of an affected system’s memory. To exploit the vulnerability, an authenticated attacker would need to run a specially crafted application. The update addresses the vulnerability by correcting how the .NET Framework handles objects in memory.” My question is the following: Has this vulnerability been addressed in the past or ? Thanks for your good work on helping the rest of us with the “maze of patching”

AskWoody PlusFebruary 3, 2021 at 11:57 am in reply to: The February 2021 Office non-Security Updates have been released #2340179I am looking at doing the updating on my Win 7 computer for the January updates for windows and office. Being an ask Woody member, I looked at the master patch list and for win 7 and office and found that the list still shows defer for all versions of Windows and Office. When is this going to be updated so it will provide guidance on what to install and what not to install? Thank you for all of your work.
