Thanks Rory, that did the trick. It also fixed the data refresh issue which is still a mystery but I’m not going to poke it.

Are you able to post a copy of the spreadsheet for us to review?

      cheers, Paul

Yes I can but It seems I will not need to. Nothing works to clarify a problem like trying to explain it to someone else. The query was inserting rather than overwriting and causing unexpected results in the lookup. Now That I’ve resolved this bit I can go back to the original sheet and see if that was the only issue.

The boffins who supply the equipment sent over a trainee in the update crew, an UNTRAINED trainee. The network logon wasn’t set up properly and the database identified the user by the logon.
btw not brilliant detective work, just installing a full version of Access.

    • in reply to: A cheap, effective home server — using Windows 8 #1350062

There’s lots of buzz about the $40 upgrade a month ago but I’ve yet to find someplace to put my money down.

    • in reply to: A Windows veteran looks at Win8 Consumer Preview #1324647

Well I took Woody’s advice, a spare XP machine. and better video card and installed 8. There are a lot of big ugly buttons on that screen and most of them proved to be less than useful. IE worked, the mail button took me to hotmail or something (the epitome of uselessness), solitaire was sooooo slow, and the remainder just left me in semi blank screens wondering what to do.

So I found the desktop and installed a few apps. I found that I could remove all of the useless buttons and get the good stuff on the first screen (at least in this small test) but what’s the point? As soon as you click on an application button it switches to the desktop anyway. Might just as well be there to start out.

It didn’t know how to add a registry key from a .key file and the fact that CopyToWinClip in my favourite text editor no longer works (it’s been working fine since I switched from the DOS version) does not bode well.

Don’t think I’ll be putting out money for this one any time soon.

Teamviewer is great. The only minor problem with it is ensuring that all of my clients are on version 5. I paid for that one (worth the $800CDN or so) but if a client gets on to Version 6 or 7 I can’t communicate with them.

    • in reply to: Outlook 2010 and POP3 #1313719

Thank you both. I will try the setting change in gmail. The secureserver (yes it is GoDaddy) works fine for me using POP3 for another account using 2003 Outlook but when I tried to set up 2010 it defaulted to IMAP and I couldn’t see a way to get it to choose POP3.
It doesn’t help a bit that the computers in question are in Utah so I’m always trying to work on a remote connection.

They haven’t gotten smarter. The scam becomes obvious with a first fact:. . . . No numbers is a very first indication that the article is bogus.

And the price of corn has dropped.

I don’t understand where this poster is coming from or going for that matter. The device either delivers on its promise to turn off the controlled outlet or it doesn’t. Plug in a receptacle tester and check.

As to the amount saved, how the heck can anybody say that. Do they know what you have plugged in and how long you computer will be turned off?

    • in reply to: .NET insecure #1288791

I hadn’t thought about Ms. Bradley’s list so I went ahead and installed any patch that Microsoft suggested. .NET 4 was still shown as insecure.
I uninstalled it and guess what. Secunia shows that it left the insecure bits.
Secunia also showed the patch KB2478661-x64 as missing. Update had not listed that one and when I installed it BINGO. No more insecure .NET of any flavour.
Now of course I have no idea what I have installed as I ‘removed’ 3.5 and 4. I think I’ll just leave well enough alone unless something actually complains about a missing piece.

    • in reply to: .NET insecure #1288764

Well I installed the latest and greatest, ran the updates, and now I have 4 versions of .NET that are insecure.
I think the LucidPuppy will be taking over tonight.

    • in reply to: .NET insecure #1288624

I’m not aware of any applications which depend on any version of .NET. Certainly nothing that I have knowingly installed. This of course is likely just a measure of my ignorance.

    • in reply to: .NET insecure #1288614

Sorry I ought to have mentioned that it was completely updated after the reinstall. Unfortunately there a number of failed updates, most of which revolve around .NET.
Since I’ve already removed the current version shouldn’t any applications fail already?

    • in reply to: form values inaccessible to queries #1276226

I knew that or at least I used to/should have. Thanks for the format tip. We have the same issue here compounded by the fact that half the machines I come across are set to US date format.

    • in reply to: Internet Explorer goes one-on-one with Firefox #1263742

Well I’ve trusted Fred’s advice for a very long time now so I’m in a bit of a hard place. Fred says we can trust IE. Secunia Personal Software Inspector (which Fred said was a good thing) says IE is unsafe for browsing (Opera, Firefox, and Chrome are all safe). I’ve come to depend on PSI to help me keep my systems safe and up to date so I think I’ll just pretend I didn’t read that particular column.

I think your suggestion of the naming convention will be the most practical approach. Thank you for sharing your thoughts
