What AV software do you use? Also, from which website did you try to download the app?

I am using Trend Micro Enterprise, but this was from the Fortinet device on the AT&T Wan.
I used the link in the article. I have heard back from Kevin C at Conectify stating: We have a version of the Connectify installer with ads for upgrading Lite users. Some AV software will flag this as malicious.

You can try downloading from the following link instead.

      http://downloads2.connectify.me/ConnectifyInstaller.exe

      Kevin C

I was able to download from that location.

      Michael,
I loved the All commands trick.
I tried the powercfg /energy twice, showing several errors and warnings. It created the expected HTML, but was unreadable by firefox 31, IE 10 or Word 2010.
I tried downloading the free Connectivity APP who is having a 70% sale by the way, but could not getting this virus warning:
      37581-Connectivity-Virus

      Thanks Deadeye,
It still would be nice to see what I was removing before I do it, wouldn’t it?

      Fred,
Have been a subscriber for a long time. I downloaded and ran the exe for Microsoft Safety Scanner yesterday after reading this article. I chose to do a full scan which was still going when i went home at 5PM. This morning it said it had found virus or malware, would I like to remove it, no mention of what it was (very poor in my estimation) anyway I chose yes. When the report came up after removing the bad guys it was a download of the program regcure, which I had never installed and UltraVNC which i use in my job to access NT4 servers that I maintain.
Well i cannot have that, so looked for the uninstall in Add/Remove. Could not find it there or on the start menu. Is it a standalone or what?
      Thanking you in advance,

      Langa Letter: XP’s No-Reformat, Nondestructive Total-Rebuild Option

I’d bookmark this site, it’s still very useful.

I concur, Have used it dozens of times. Requires updating Security patches but installed programs and data are secure. never a problem. And I often recommend it to others.

    • in reply to: Slipstream Win XP Pro SP3 #1274839

Activation of an OEM image uses the OEM’s license key, not the unique key on the label that was attached to the computer. The key on the computer, although a valid key, is unused, but is contractually required to be provided with the computer by Microsoft. The key printed on the computer should be different than the key recovered by any of the key recovery probrams (Belarc, etc.) that read the actual key used for activation.

I concur with this comment. I have used nLite for years to rebuild my Optiplexes when they are handed down to build a SP3 slip cutomized to remove some of the junk. Tour, messenger, joy sticls, foreign keyboards etc.
They never require windows activation when finished.

      in this thread,
maybe someone has a clue how to get my aging but very satisfactory MB (Elitegroup PT800CE-A with a 3gHz processor and a 200gB SATA1 drive).
and SATA1 ( 2 drive slots) and should be able to talk eSATA to an external HD box – I bought one from Sandberg that talks ESATA2 or USB2 – I think I have covered most angles, setting jumpers on the drive to slow it down to 1500MB/s etc-
The PC simply does not recognise the esata connection and the 1 tB drive- Nor does it recognise the 1tB drive when connecting to the internal SATA – I tried several drives from different makers- no go.
the USB connection works fine with a smaller drive
what to do ? I´d hate to discard of the 3GHz machine that works so well. hints , anyone ?
      best, musiklab in denmark.

If you have XP and trying to use an eSATA card you might need to find drivers. IMHO eSATA external is preferable to USB 2. When I went this way i had the same problem getting XP to identify the card. i was able to find drivers at the products web site and then it worked flawlessly. In fact when my original hard drive crashed I was able to restore it to a new hard drive using my Acronis Rexcue disk and the Acronis backups on the external hard drive.

You may often need to install a chipset driver first.

sometimes when I cannot find the driver on the CD I Right mouse click on the Yellow exclamation point and select update driver. I find on HP stuff it will find the driver after a while. Even after i searched the CD for it and had no luck.

    • in reply to: Re-installing Windows XP #1251044

You said reinstall XP. If you want to do that Fred langa wrote the book years ago on Information Week:
      http://www.informationweek.com/news/windows/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=189400897
If you follow this it will leave your installed programs, documents etc untouched but you will have to re-install SP3 and about 90 patches to return to current sate.

If you haven’t reinstalled or done a fresh install in 7 years, you should probably do a fresh install.

If your CD is the correct one (it must be the same CD that you installed XP with 7 years ago) and not scratched you should probably replace your CDROM. Like others have said they don’t last that long. You could also try cleaning the laser with a swab and rubbing alcohl.

You are in luck. The specs at:

say you have a free PCI Express x16 slot.
You can get drivers, manual etc at:

      Mercyh,
Local computer store said I can return Windows7 since I didn’t use it. I just got a VL from corporate. I asked three weeks ago and asked the wrong person.

So looks like I will start over with new media downloaded from MS using my VL license.

Hopefully i can go the distance this time as this must be my ninth or tenth install try.

      thanks for all your support

    • in reply to: Need Help Upgrading HP xw4400 Workstation to XP #1233751

      Mercyh,
I found that site last week. When I tried using that numer it says:
According to our records, the number of times you can activate Windows with this product keyhas been exceeded. Please enter a different product key, and then Retry.

I have a case open with SBC Replace, not sure how that is going as they say downgrade was discontinued in September 2009??
      Gotta love MS

    • in reply to: Need Help Upgrading HP xw4400 Workstation to XP #1233735

      Mercyh,
I am having a problem getting a Product Key for the Windows 7 Downgrade. The directions say to install using the OEM media and the old product Key and then call the telephone number for activation. Explain it to the person and they should give you a key.
The problem is I have called three times and they say they only do Activation, I need to call my Microsoft Reseller. The Reseller tells me to call the 888 Activation number.

      A vicious Circle!

In addition, some Microsoft people say the offer ended September 1, 2009, Yet this Microsoft Web Site:
      http://oem.microsoft.com/script/contentpage.aspx?pageid=552836#windows7

Says: “Note that Windows 7 end user downgrade rights will be available for approximately 18 months after the general availability of Windows 7 (April, 2011) or the release of a Windows 7 Service Pack, whichever is earlier.”

So time is running out as SP1 is coming soon.

Starting to think I’ll take a chance on the Internet to purchase another XP Pro x65 Media kit & Product Number.

    • in reply to: Need Help Upgrading HP xw4400 Workstation to XP #1232755

      mercyh,
No, what I was saying is that the W7 media that is downgradeable at the local repair shop has both W7 64 bit and XP pro 64 bit media and keys. So I need to purchase that media kit from them.

I don’t have W7 yet, sorry for the confusion
