    • in reply to: Win 7 – Cannot search for updates #1230627

Many regular Loungers will probably be disappointed at this suggestion, but I would try to solve this issue by going the excellent Symantec Customer Support desk…..(If their product is disabling functionality in Windows 7, they need to know about it for the sake of other user. Nevertheless, the following link MAY take you to a solution: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/900936

Alternatively, the following has been provided by a MS Engineer (Martin) on a MS support forum: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/thread/52b1a88e-dead-43d0-bb9c-17429550546d. In addition to the response pasted below, there are other possible solutions on the same site.

“If you receive Windows Update error 8024402C while checking for updates, you might need to do one of the following:

      • This error might be caused by a program running on your computer that is preventing Windows Update Services (SVCHOST) from accessing the Internet. Programs that might do this include firewalls, anti-spyware software, web accelerators, Internet security or antivirus programs. and proxy servers. If you have any of these programs running, you might need to turn them off while downloading and installing updates. Microsoft recommends you turn them back on after updating your computer. For more information, see Windows Update error 80072efd.

      • If the computer is connected to a network at work, contact a network administrator. You probably receive updates using Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), a service that enables network administrators to deploy and manage updates for all computers on a network. For more information about WSUS, go to the Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) website.

      • If your computer is usually connected to a network at work (for example, if you use a mobile PC but you are currently using it at home or at another location), you probably receive updates using WSUS and can not receive updates by connecting directly to the Internet or to another network, such as a home network. To solve the problem, connect to the network at work and try checking for updates again, or contact a network administrator. To see if your computer’s updates are being managed by a WSUS server, do the following:

      1. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button, clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Update.

      2. If your computer is managed by WSUS, you will see You receive updates: Managed by your system administrator near the bottom of the page.

If your computer is being managed by WSUS, you can connect to the WSUS server either at your work, or through a virtual private network (VPN). If this doesn’t work, you can try connecting directly to the Microsoft Updates website by doing the following:

      1. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Update.

      2. Click Check online for updates from Microsoft Update Service.

      • If the computer is connected directly to the Internet or to a home network (and never connected to a network at work), you might need to set Internet Explorer to automatically detect local area network (LAN) settings so Windows Update can go online to obtain updates. To do this, follow these steps:

      1. Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Internet Explorer.

      2. Click the Tools button, click Internet Options, click the Connections tab, and then click LAN settings.

      3. Under Automatic configuration, select the Automatically detect settings check box, and then click OK”

    • in reply to: Embedded worksheet in PPoint 2007 #1230574

As I understand things, you can only scroll within the worksheet whilst in Normal View in powerpoint when creating the slide show/presentation. You position the area of the worksheet you want visible in the xcel window in the usual way. As soon as you go into slide show view, powerpoint shows what is in effect a “capture” of the area of the worksheet as it was in the frame being viewed in normal view. I have got around this in some cases by reducing the size of the worksheet so that it fills the slide in normal view and then used pptPlex to create the slide show (you can download pptPlex at: http://www.officelabs.com/projects/pptPlex/Pages/default.aspx), because with pptPlex one can zoom in on any region of a slide to see even the smallest text. Of course, this may not be practical in many cases. But, as far as I can make out, you can not have an active xcel worksheet scroll window in a powerpoint slide in slide show view. Do any other Loungers have a different take?

    • in reply to: Solving “Ribbon Hate”: Ubit Menu with Office2010 #1229847

Well, it helps to search the web before rushing to post in this forum. I have just found the answer to my own question: Yes, the Ubit menu does work with office 2010. Download it at: http://www.ubit.ch/software/ubitmenu-languages/#c262

Note, however: If you upgrade from Office 2007 to Office 2010 with ubit menu already installed in Office 2007, it will automatically integrate into Office 2010

If you don’t like the ribbon, download the Ubit menu and install it: It enables you to use word, xcel and powerpoint with 2003 look-alike menus: Great for those who are more comfortable with the 2003 Office “look”.

Ted and Jonathan: Thanks (sorry that YOU had to read the EULA for me!!) I still think it would be “reasonable” to load both 32 and 64 bit versions on the same 64 bit-capable PC to determine whether or not serious glitches would occur with any of your older software/hardware before committing to actually activating the chosen version (after all, MS does allow an implied trial period before activation must be performed. Nevertheless, I shall respect the “law”. Thanks once again.

    • in reply to: Dual Booting W7 and W7 #1229318

So, all this suggests one could do trial installations to “dual boot” with windows 7 32 bit and windows 7 64 bit to see which operates without hassles and then activate the one that works best and uninstall the other OS?

Yes Ted, I agree! I was trying to decide whether or not to “play” with XP mode for a bit, and then uninstall it and wondered if the effort would be worth it. Clearly, a complex uninstall procedure would not be worth the “fun”! Regrettably, I did not think of checking other forums to see what uninstalling involves. The quick response to my query on this forum has, however, solved my dilemma…Thanks once again. It’s great to be a small (tiny?) part of this vast windows knowledge pool.
