      @Alex5723:  Thanks.

      However, according to this article (see link below) “The MediaCreationTool wrapper, the work of GitHub developer AveYo, lets you create a special ISO for updating from any version of Windows 10 to Windows 11.

      The open-source tool runs a script that skips the hardware verification steps of the Windows 11 installation process and the dynamic updates feature.

      That enables almost any computer to get the operating system.

      In addition, systems without Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 can install the OS

      “As of now, the bypass is viable for 22H1 builds,” AveYo said.

      It remains to be seen if it will also work on the official Windows 11 release, which will start rolling out on 5 October 2021”.

      Source of the above:  https://mybroadband.co.za/news/software/416374-new-tool-lets-unsupported-pcs-install-windows-11.html

      I already have Windows 11 installed and running on the VM.  My issue is that I cannot get the latest update installed via Windows Update.  (Weird!!)

      Interestingly however, when I downloaded the latest Windows 11 Dev build ISO and performed an in-place install using it, it worked!

    • in reply to: Windows 11 Insider Preview build 22454 released to DEV #2392747

      Greetings @joep517

      I am successfully running Windows 11 Insider Preview build 22454.1000 (Version Dev) in VMWare Workstation 16 Player (updated successfully from previous Dev versions over several weeks, all of which have worked just fine in my VM).

      When I run Windows PC Health Check (just for kicks!), to my surprise, the result is “This PC doesn’t currently meet Windows 11 system requirement.  This PC must support Secure Boot;  TPM 2.0 must be supported and enabled on this PC”.   (!!!)

      Now, when I run Windows Update (to update to Insider Preview build 22468 (Dev)), the update fails for the same reasons as above (PC doesn’t meet Windows 11 system requirements).  But I am already successfully running Windows 11 on the “VM PC”.

      Any comments?

      I decided to upgrade to the non-subscription version.  No issues, BUT note that if you make full disk/system backups, you can NOT use a recovery disk to recover individual files from such backups if the images were saved in the newer .tibx file format.  You can only do so if the image has been saved in the older .tib format.  Files can, however, still be recovered from file backups as before.

      @anonymous:  There is an option to select a non-subscription upgrade.  (You have to look carefully for it, though!)

      Update:  Today Microsoft offered me 20H2 via Windows Update.  I created a full system backup and then went head and accepted the update.  The whole process took about 2 minutes!  So far, everything is working OK.  (Perhaps the version of 20H2 that I obtained via the MCT had a bug?).  I have just created a new installation USB using the MCT as a recovery tool, just in case).

      @Microfix  and @PKCano

      Many thanks.  I was ready for the update to be unsuccessful (hence the system backup), but was eager to see if I might just get lucky (obviously not!)

      I am aware that attempting to install certain drivers AFTER upgrading to to 20H2 might be unsuccessful for reasons published; however, I am given to believe that certain drivers already in place in  a system BEFORE trying to upgrade to 20H2 might result in  failure to upgrade.

      I was wondering how one would know if drivers are the cause of an upgrade failure, and if so,  which specific in-place drivers are the culprits?  Not knowing this, how can a user attempt to render a system “acceptable” to 20H2 by, for example, uninstalling the offending driver(s) and attempting to get a compatible (newer) replacement.

      (By the way, I used a 20H2 installation USB created on 04 November 2020 immediately after fully installing all latest Microsoft updates  –after creating a full system backup).

      I tend to support the “if it ain’t broke, don’t touch it” approach.  However, I also believe in avoiding security risks.  So, IMHO, updates that reduce security vulnerability should be installed.  (You have previously “downflashed” successfully, so I suppose you could always do it again if the latest update adversely affects performance).

    • in reply to: Microsoft upgrades automatically 1809 to 2004 #2273326

      This is all very well for many (most?) users.  I have an elderly neighbour who is quite happy with windows 10  1809 which works just fine with her Apps and hardware.  A forced update could result in some older Apps and hardware no-longer functioning.  She uses her system for very basic purposes and is not in a position to upgrade Apps and/or hardware simply because she is forced to by Microsoft.

      I suspect there are other users in the same position.

      Surely it is time for Microsoft to allow users to permanently block updates (with a clear indication that users do so entirely at their own risk?)

      @Alex5723 and @joep517:

      I believe I have solved the problem:  I have Storage Sense turned on.  After turning it off and rebooting my system, I was able to run disk-clean-up.  So it seems Storage Sense disables Disk-clean-up.  (When I think about it, this makes sense!)
